Excellent Documentary on what a Taboo subject i come from Belfast & was born in 1967 so i witnessed alot of ' The Troubles' it was a War thankfully over now but the disappeared need to be found & given back to their loved ones only then can the War really be over!

As I was watching this documentary it was interrupted by Eric Cantona doing an advert for William Hill bookmakers. For those who dont know William Hill was a young Black & Tan stationed in Cork during the Irish War of Independence. According to local historians he was well liked by the local people.

Does anybody know the names of the two tans in Sing Sing at the end of part 1. My great uncle Bertie and comrade were abducted by the IRA in November 1920. They were subsequently executed. Their bodies were never returned at the end of the war of independence. Re-listening to Jim Fitzgerald retailing of the story, he mentions that the two were picked up at Emmett Place. This is consistent with the official narrative. The portrayal does appear to be of Bertram Agnew and Lionel Mitchell.

@@seanohare5488 oh! Were the bodies that were returned to their families innocent? The IRA members who also committed atrocities of Irish civilians did not do it for Ireland. As a kid who didn't pay attention in history class I always thought Michael Collins was killed by the British. Can you imagine the shock and disillusionment I felt when I found he was killed after the British left? And by his own! Getting a body back depended on who you were, and obviously the British families who get their son/husband's body returned had more to offer those particular IRA members in return, than the Irish families they looked down on. I'm not saying I would be any different, who knows for sure what they would do in the same circumstance.

One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen on the IRA and the invasion of Ireland. Boy those guys were absolutely ruthless. I’ve never heard of Sing Sing prison in Cork,but it’s definitely on the bucket list to see when I go over to Cork next. Where is the bog/forest where they executed all those people?

O' Halpin is a relative of young Irish patriot Kevin Barry who was hanged by the British authorities at the age of 18. I would love to see a documentary about the 3 Catholic clergymen that were murdered by the Auxiliaries. Fr Michael Griffith in Co.Galway in November 1920 who thought he was visiting a sick member of his parish after being called but it was a deliberate trap by the Auxiliaries. Also Canon Magner who was over 70 and was killed in cold blood by an Auxiliary in Co.Cork in December 1920 and in the same incident this Auxiliary also killed an Irishman in his 20's but would be considered "Special Needs" in today's parlance. Then there was Fr James O' Callaghan who was killed in Co.Cork in June 1921.

Patrick Deasy an IRA Volunteer(aged 16) was KIA in the Kilmichael Ambush Co.Cork on 28th November 1920. Kevin Barry was an IRA Volunteer who was hanged by the British authorities at the age of 18 for taking part in an ambush in Dublin City on 22nd September 1920 which left 3 soldiers dead from the Duke Of Wellington Regiment including a 15 year old 2 weeks short of his 16th birthday. On 31st May 1921 in Youghal,Co Cork the IRA using an IED ambushed the band of the Hampshire Regiment which left 7 soldiers dead including 3 teenagers(aged 14 to 16) and over 20 wounded. Then there was the 3 bandboys of the Manchester Regiment who were abducted and killed in Co.Cork in June 1921 who were also young teenagers. Several Irish civilian teenagers were killed by Crown Forces during the conflict. The Crown Forces and in particular the Auxiliaries murdered 3 Catholic Priests including Canon Magner who was over 70 years of age. The historian who made this documentary is Eunan O'Halpin and is a relative of young Irish patriot Kevin Barry who along with another 9 IRA men were given State Funerals in tbe Republic of Ireland in the early 2000's.

There was a young teenager in Co.Galway aged 14 who used to travel around with the Crown Forces and point out the homes of Republican sympathisers which were later burned down. This teenager's name was William Joyce and would be better known as an adult as Lord Haw Haw who worked in Germany in the propaganda department under Gobbels during WW2 . As you know he was captured by the British and hanged for treason. He literally tried to save his neck by pointing out his service to the Crown during the Irish War of Independence.

The presenter repeatedly states that many inocent civilians were wrongly excited by the IRA, why then has he presented literally zero evidence of this aledged fact? There is the horrific reality that children were killed, the three drummer boys, and the English civilian 15year old. These killings are shocking, although one of the drummer boys was old enough to bear arms so could arguably be discounted from the sad total. Other than these cases all others so far outlined in this episode for either uniformed members of British Crown forces, or spy's and informers way beyond any reasonable doubt. It detracts from the argument that there was so much obvious injustice and thoughtless unfair killing if in the 40 odd minutes of each episode you cannot present credible and factual testimony to support the hypothesis that this was anything but an anomaly.

Another gombeen historian who believe wars can be fought, won and lost, without atrocities and civilian casualties. There are no clean wars. War, and those engaged in prosecuting it, is a barbaric affair. War brings out the worst excesses in humans, be they military or administrators of that war. The warfare in Ireland of 1918 to 1922 wasn't special. Neither were the atrocities on all sides. They were typical of wars of independence across Europe and the world, included among them Finland's independence and subsequent civil war. Ireland, under Gaelic laws and rule, existed for over 1,700 years before the Act of Union with Britain. Lots of wars, local and wider, between Gaelic tribal dynasties through the centuries. Wars against the Norse, the Franco Normans, and later the Sasanach (Germanic Angles and Saxons, later to evolve in to the English). There's no doubt millions died in the collective of these wars, in battle, "collateral" deaths, persecution and famine. You will hear crickets among most historians in Ireland about this 1,600 year plus period in Irish history. There seems to be an obsession with Irish independence and the "blood lust" of those who fought an enemy to win that freedom. These same historians seem to have no issues with Irishmen involved in wars and civilian atrocities wearing the uniform of the British crown. After all, orders are orders, and refusal to obey orders subject to military discipline and consequences. It is unfortunate that many historians in Ireland, like Eunan O'Halpin, approach worthy subjects like this one with a baked-in, politically motivated agenda rather than an open and neutral mind that followed the facts and understood the barbarity that is war in all its forms.

It wasn't an Anglo Irish war, it was an insurgency, of which Britain has faced many in its empires decline and unlike dictatorship's, walk away when it becomes too costly for them, rather than take the very extreme measures necessary to suppress a population. Those poor people were clandestinely killed and removed from their families, purely for sectarian ideology, legitimising it, by calling it a war is not appropriate. Ulster has taken on many forms in its extremely long and proud history, at the moment historical sectarian decisions have reduced it to six counties, but it is still Ulster and will always be. Maybe someday even reverting back to its Ulster name, flag and original size, who knows, maybe to even more than nine counties. Ireland has always been divided, that’s the Irish way, historically much more than today, the concept of unification was actually brought to Ireland by the British, as part of their expansionist colonial campaign, totally planned, implemented and managed by their local administrator, Dublin. Dublin learnt well, it still pursues a British agenda. Rewriting history to suit an expansionist narrative, exaggerating historical events, justifying proxy incursions, ethnic cleansing, genocide, providing safe havens and proxy violence, is unfortunately not uncommon in Ireland. The Republic of Ireland have totally rewritten and sanitised, not only Dublin's part in Irish history, but also foolishly inserted a part of this fictionalised version of history, into their constitution and national anthem. As evidence for all to see and verify for themselves how Dublin abuses history. "A Nation Once Again" or “reunification” are fictional, concepts, fantasy, nonsense statements, as there was never a sovereign Southern Irish government that governed Ulster, now called Northern Ireland. Ulster or Britain have been the only two historical rulers of Ulster. Ulster was independent kingdom before being subdued and ruled by the British, conquered centuries after our Southern Irish neighbours. “A Nation Once Again” for Ulster, now unfortunately called Northern Ireland, would be independence, should it eventually decide to split with the UK. Definitely not the disaster that unification or this historically abused phrase “A New Ireland” inflicted on the counties Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan and literally the whole west coast of Ireland, incessantly promoted by the Republic of Ireland and their Northern Irish proxies. Used frequently as a justification for proxy violence and disruption in Northern Ireland and to distract our Southern Irish neighbours from the performance of historically abysmal Irish Republican governments.

Are you aware there was hundreds of Irish Great War veterans in the IRA during the Irish War of Independence 1919-1921 including 5 who were decorated for bravery one of which was a VC recipient? The Director of Training for the IRA at GHQ in Dublin was Emmet Dalton who while serving with the 9th Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers was awarded the Military Cross for bravery at Guinchy in September 1916 during the latter stages of the Battle of the Somme. The most successful IRA Field Commander in the conflict was Tom Barry who served with the Royal Field Artillery with the rank of Bombardier and saw service in the Middle East theatre during WW1. He was part of the relief force who failed to break the siege at Kut,Mesopotamia(modern day Iraq) when British General Townsend and his garrison was besieged.
