@@johnathanpearson3203 Apart from that being bollocks; when was the last time you saw an environmental disaster due to lithium extraction? You get lithium from salts (which is what you are talking about) and from mining. So when was the last lithium extraction disaster, vs the last oil tanker sinking or oil rig explosion? Nothing is perfect, but the environmental side-effects of lithium extraction are nowhere near as bad as those of oil extraction. As an example; you take lithium out of something, put it in a battery and can recharge that battery 1000’s of times. With oil, you take it out, transport it using low refined oil in ships. Refine it using electricity (which powers electric cars), transport it around using more oil that is more refined than the ship (using more electricity). Then pump that refined fuel into cars that are 30% efficient. Or generate electricity, move it to a car battery via the grid and then to an electric motor which is 80 - 90% efficient. This is why governments are pushing electric cars!

It's older cars too. My old agila 2008 needed a new abs pump (leaking) so after buying new £650 and labour £150 it needs coding to the car and yes a 16 year old car needs a dealer only code. Otherwise it won't pass the MOT. Cost third party maybe £280 for the code in. Files are held only on the vauxhall service website. Plus you need the cars security code to do it. 😮😢

So what is going to happen to all the scrap EVs? - the damage to the environment through production v the damage to the environment for their disposal negate any supposed 'green' benefits. The sooner governments realise this the better. The Macmaster can't be the only private buyer where what they owe is more than the value of their EV - and it will probably end up as scrap because no one wants it secondhand. What a dire situation.

I own three historic registered (over 40 years old) classic cars and not anything newer at all. They are exempt from road tax, mot's and any clean air zone, including ULEZ. They're also simple, small, reliable, easy to fix and very very cheap to run, depreciation is less than zero. I cannot get my mind around the mentality of buying any new car, losing thousands, it being an unreliable piece of over-complex plastic rubbish, getting rid of it and then repeating the process, how is that 'Green' ? It certainly isn't. A fundamental change is needed. Small, light, simple and infinitely mend-able cars, it's the past, AND the future.

Im 56 and have always bought used cars, never bought a new one, and this is the first time, in my life, where the car I own is worth more now than when I bought it. I have a 2012 BMW 318dse estate that i paid £3800 for about three years ago and when the cam chain snapped, last year, it was more sensible, financially, to have the engine rebuilt with a modified cam chain than to buy an equivalent BMW that was still on its original chain, which are a common fault on those cars and can snap at any time. It was huge news, when these cars were current models, that the cam chains, which were meant to be maintenence free forever, started snapping left right and centre and it cost BMW a pretty penny at the time. Even now (I've just checked), i can't find a good one, like mine, for less than about 5 grand. At the time i was deciding on whether to repair or replace i was looking at other cars too and it turned out that it wasnt only BMWs that were expensive, they all were. I saw a 2012 Mondeo Titanium estate and they wanted £6500 for it and a 2012 Jag x-type estate for about the same. I couldn't believe the state of the second hand car market when I needed one for the first time in a decade. I'll be keeping mine until one of us dies!

Example where road tax is £35 on a diesel car as the emissions are low but is not compliant to the ULEZ zone as is EURO 5 and incurs a charge but equivalent petrol car road tax is £150 and is ULEZ compliant as is EURO 4 .

Batteries in EV's get the attention but have 7/8 year warranties On board chargers, control units and HVAC systems (often an integral part of battery heating/cooling system) also crap out expensively and if on a 3 year warranty you are on your own. Then there are the 12v battery eaters for which dealers are now giving out 12v float charger FOC😅 Then there are the motors, which certain European makers are just not very good at having (badly) copied Tesla and cheaped out in the process Next, Hybrids. Oh God just never buy any used Hybrid outside of battery warranty, especially ones with a low miles cap once past 3 years old (Looking at you, BMW with your 60 000 mile limit) They are the next used car market disaster as they get shat out by fleets at end of lease

It's all because people are keeping their cars on the road for as long as possible now,if you look through comments on EV channels people are paying £600 on repairs on a £1500 car because it's cheaper keeping the car you know rather than buying another for £4000 with unknown problems.

I wonder if my old EV is going around and around like unclaimed luggage on the baggage carousel LOL A friend of mine extended his lease because the same car last year was £150 a month more to lease (Mercedes A250) so one less car going into the second hand market. Head gasket went as many do on these cars so now after being fixed looking for another car lease as there are cheaper deals because very few people are buying new cars so manufacturers offering them to lease companies just to shift them. When I sold my EV in May 2024 I bought a 2019 Leon and looking on SEAT website I could only buy a new 2024 car from UK stock as no factory orders being taken. The UK has thousands of unsold cars at docks like Avonmouth where I saw rows of MG4 electric cars. How old is your NEW car or lease car when you get it ? How long was it sat at the docks, 6 months...12 months ?

I think that insurers are putting part of the costs of EV insurance on ICE vehicle owners to try and make them sell. Motability has EV's costing £30,000 with no advance deposit but ICE Vehicles costing £18,000 with advance deposits of upwards of £500, this to me proves that those that want diesel or petrol are subsidising the advance payments of EV leasers. Dealers will overcharge for vehicles because they are having to pay more at auction for the vehicle, this then means the dealer either loses out by doing repairs and selling them at the price they would sell at or they increase the prices above what people would have paid months earlier. If the dealer wants the vehicle they will pay more than a private buyer at the auction to get the vehicles they want or lose out when the private buyer pays more than even the dealer is prepared to pay knowing that the vehicle needs work and the private buyer might have the knowledge to do the repairs.

The problem is that many company cars are now EVs. The benefit in kind tax means that you'll be mad to have anything except an EV. And your employer picks up the cost of coffees while you're charging. But 3 or 4 years down the road, that EV is not wanted. A private buyer can't take the risk, charging is a nuisance and expensive and insurance is too expensive.

In my opinion at the very start of the EV revolution. The government’s should have fixed a weight maximum. The damage these heavy vehicles with the associated damage to our roads because of the hard suspension ( to make them sporty😅) Low profile soft tires and high performance brakes to stop the bloody things!! Particulates from the tires and brakes pollute the air. Just saying.

I want to change my 66 plate 4 series however, what’s the point if in a few years time it’ll be worthless due to possible mandating of EVs. I’m waiting out to see how this and future governments finally decides the future for petrol/diesel, eg will they tax it out of existence or will it be kept in as an alternative to EVs.
