It’s no surprise the British government don’t understand what goes on in their own country, fantastic to see British watchmaking

I’m lucky enough to be attending as a guest of Vertex as I’m picking up a watch from them at the same time. Hope to meet Mr Smith amongst many others.

I really hope this is the start of an increasing resurgence in the British watchmaking industry. I'm all for supporting these companies in my own small way through buying their pieces. Unfortunately I'll never own a Roger Smith but am happy to stand outside his shop with my nose pressed against the window in awe.

Where there’s a will there’s a way. It’s great to see the start of the reviewal of British watchmaking. Against all the odds it has persevered. And it seems to be in capable and passionate hands. Looking forward to what’s coming. Unfortunately won’t be able to attend in person, so I sure do hope for a good media coverage. P.S. Wearing my 3861 Omega Speedy. Hope one day I’ll be able to afford a piece from the likes of RW Smith.

Interesting conversation. But I wasn't really sure what to focus on - the helmets, the phasers, the rifles, or the chat.

would love a Roger Smith but £131k for a time only series 1 is out of my budget

A great interview Richard And Roger. I've always found in interviews that Roger is a well grounded watchmaker who is very realistic in terms of what can be achieved by whom and when and this comes out in this interview as well. The current focus on design and innovation still crackles with excitement. Building back the British watch industry is happening but it will take time to start producing things like movements on an industrial scale at a competitive price may take a generation or so. Anyway I'm waffling but many thanks for sharing.

Great interview with a realistic statement of where the UK watch making industry stands. There's no doubt a lot of good design is being done here, and assembly work too, with pockets of manufacturing of some parts .A very long way to go as Mr Smith says. Great to hear a shout out for Mr Jones Watches and the 3861 Speedy. I think it's a pity that the last mass manufacturer of decent quality watches in UK Smiths (no relation) did not go bust but pulled out to do other things. Smiths Industries is a FTSE 100 company today. Smiths watches were used by the British Everest Expedition and other polar expeditions in the 50s/early 60's. The skills were let go.

Listening to this all the way from Cape Town South Africa is quite entertaining especially listening to Roger Smith complaining about the collapse of British Industry as we are so far behind on the horological barometer and hardly have an industry that we can speak of but I did manage to get my JLC Atmos clock serviced by a local man so we also live in hope here on the African outback !

@@richardbartlett6932 Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities - wine and restaurants are exquisite. Wristwatches - not much to offer. 1 or 2 shops in the Victoria & Alfred basin worth checking out - spotted a Moser, some JLC reverso's and Breguet type 20's.

You are not a watchmaker if you don't make the movement. It is not a 'British watch' if you put a chinese, swiss or Japanese movement in it. Watchmaking is a bit of a farce when someone can make a case, a dial, wear a loupe and call themselves a 'watchmaker.'
