I've always thought it's best to swing hard and far when you're brand new and starting out, then dial it back 10-15% when you start to hit the club face consistently so you can get more accuracy. Learning to swing softer later in life is easier than learning to swing harder imo. I've lost ~5-10 yards with every club since I started dialing it back but I rarely shoot worse than 80 anymore. I don't need 300+ yard drives at most of the public courses here, but everyone's situation is obviously different. For me, swinging harder doesn't make the ball go further though. It just goes higher and spins more, making it balloon in the wind more lol.

24 yards off line with driver is a great drive. To any height handy caps, don’t swing all out on your shots. Get it on the fairway and that will improve your approach. Drive for show and putt for doe.

I'm guessing it comes down to what you spend the most reps grooving because the timing is so important. If you usually swing close to full out and the switch up to "smooth" you're probably going to be less accurate. And vice-versa.

When you swing as fast as you can, you have to stay pretty much in the center of your balance otherwise you will fall down. Your brain is really good at preventing you from falling down. That tends to get things lined up. When you swing slow, you have a lot more wiggle room to sway. If you swing really easy, you can sort of make contact with the ball in a lot of different positions relative to your body. Swinging hard tends to show you exactly where the ball should (has to) be in order to make contact. When I want to really rip it, the key for me to hit it straight is to give myself a little extra time at the top of the backswing to make sure things can stay in sequence.

Getting rid of the slice or the fades off the Tee, and turning the ball over for a slight draw will add a lot more yards than club head speed. The All-State Basketballer would have gained a lot more distance off the Tee if he could get rid of that slice. I know. I had to re-name my slice to fade just as a mental thing until I could learn to stop hitting the ball with the club open. AND one of the best ways to overcome that, is by not really slow down the club head, but instead trying to be smoother. If you study the golf swing, you will find that harder does not equal faster. Faster is a combination of being loose and being able to cross your hands over quickly with great timing. You can generate clubhead speed a lot faster with the motion of the wrists than the dropping/ pulling down of your arms. If you don't believe me, get your driver and set up with the driver at the point in your swing where you start to turn your wrists over and just flip them over and see how far the club head moves by doing nothing but flipping your wrists. Then go to the range and hit some ball like that. Don't make a full swing, just use your wrists to flip the club. Just set up and arc the club ~12" behind the ball to 12" in front and see how far they go. Besides we would all be able to play until we are old men if we swung like Fred Couples vs swinging like Tiger. I've had 3 back surgeries and need at least 2 more. Another lower and an upper to hopefully just be able to play again, and I swung like an asshole when I was younger. It is not surprising to me that Tiger has had so many back issues. If you are hitting the ball with the club open due to timing, ball placement, coming over the top, or any of a hundred other reasons, swinging harder is just going to multiply the end result not improve it. Plus how many times have you been in between clubs on the approach and decided to hit the longer iron with a smooth easy swing and completely flew the green? That is the real tell.
@honuputters1891
@honuputters1891 3 ай бұрын
Wrist flip gets you a lot of easy speed at the low end, but it is hard to coordinate with other motions once you get into the higher speed ranges. Not only does wrist flip move the club fast, it also changes the face angle rapidly.

Say you swing your driver at 110 mph, stock swing. If you tried to swing it as fast as possible and still make contact with the ball you might be able to get up to 115 mph max. Swinging it 'nice and easy' will net you about 105. When PGA pro's say they're swing at 85% does NOT mean 85% of their max speed, it's most likely about 5 mph slower than their managable top speed. For anyone interested in this or doubting it, go swing on a launch monitor, see for your self. The mechanics, tempo of your swing really dictate your swing speed (coupled with baseline strength). I can swing with what 'feels' like 200% more effort than my stock swing but it only nets 5% max more speed (usually a bit less). Swinging at your comfortable max usually provides the most constistent everything (path/speed/delivery etc).
@Ifishmo
@Ifishmo 5 ай бұрын
This is also assuming you actually 'have a swing' and not just winging it. ie. you understand the fundamentals of the golf swing, club shaft/head on plane etc. This video, showing ryan going at it with very impressive high MPH speeds, also shows him miss crazy left/right, which equals lost balls/more strokes. So, assuming you can swing out of your shoes and NOT lose balls, go for it all day/every day. But if it leads to lost balls, or topped shots....stop, make good contact before you release the beast and try to hit homeruns.
@Ifishmo
@Ifishmo 5 ай бұрын
Also note, no offense meant, but these guy's swings are NOT fundamentally 'good' swings, not on plane, terrible path, backswings all over the place. Trying to use 'strokes gained' with these 3 (as far as 'distance equals less strokes') is just not a good application of this model. Put water/OB on the right side of the tee-box, then tell them to 'Tee it high and let it fly!' and see what happens (ie. lost ball, sliced to the moon, topped duck hook, mental debt, bad round, poor course management)

@@Ifishmo Good comments. same thing went through my head - those numbers have to be taken into context. Everybody works differently and while one persons swing gets "better" by adding force another players swing falls apart when speed is applied. I am also not sure about using averages in this context. Not that I have a better idea to do it but a ball in the deep rough or OB is way worse for your score than having 20 yards less for your next shot, isn't it? A lost shot is gone forever, 20 yards behinds can be overcome and theres more than enough that can go wrong with your shot whether you are 20 nearer or further away.

Hitting it 30 yards closer to the hole even if you miss the fairway is obviously a better strategy on paper. However, this goes out the window if you hit the ball OB. Even more so if you actually follow the penalty rules.
@GolfBusters
@GolfBusters 5 ай бұрын
That’s a good point, it’s hard to put real world pressure on a test like this but hopefully knowing the numbers helps you to not be as scared of the OB shot since you know in the long run what the results should be
@friedsensei
@friedsensei 5 ай бұрын
@@GolfBusters the strategy only works if you have also eliminated the duck hook and slice entirely from your game. 3 off the tee isn't worth any amount of extra yardage. If you play with a 1 penalty drop and take your 3rd shot where the ball went OB the strategy is still valid, but those aren't the rules. Yes, my friends hate me.

Here's another myth that I'm sure these gentlemen have dispelled before. Golfers who say they are swing at 80% are not really swinging at 80%. It's more like in the low to mid 90s percentage. Think about it: Dustin Johnson swings at about 120 mph. If he then swings at 80%, then that means he would be swing the driver at 96 mph. That's below LPGA swing speeds! How about the other way? If Dustin's 120 mph is 80% of his full swing, then that means his all-out full swing is at a whopping 150 mph! At a TaylorMade competition on KZbin, I believe the highest he got was 127 mph. Rory McIlroy matched that speed. And if you watch any of the tips on Golf Pass, you will see how they say nonsensical things like, "I'm swinging at 50%." Um, no. You're not. You're so-called 50% swing is closer to 75 or 80%. If you have a 100 mph swing and you swing at 50%, then you will be swinging a driver only 50 mph. The ball will barely get off the ground!

@mattdaniels6430
@mattdaniels6430 2 ай бұрын
@@chachichochacorta8577 It is tricky I agree. I always understood it in a way of how far away it is from your max effort. It is probably very difficult to quantify, maybe with 3d measuring or/force plates. I just wanted to note, that this 80% thing isnt some myth and while your observation is correct, your conclusions are built on the premise that effort = club head speed. And while that in itself is a topic worth talking about, I am pretty sure, it isn't what this "swing at 80%" is all about. Because, as you suggest, the correlation between effort and speed certainly isnt linear.
