I have been working through your curriculum in advance of educating my son (including high school material). Memoria Press has provided a good deal of facts and a look at humanity through books. With the facts and stories in your curriculum , I can understand how my son will be taught how to rightly consider everything he consumes in order to form his own thoughts on the world, the people in it and the issues of his day. You are 100 percent not forcing opinions on students in order to force them to think a certain way.

Martin is correct that classical educators should not be using the "how to think, not what to think" slogan. This is a progressive slogan meant to deride the teaching of factual knowledge and the use of "rote learning." Birbalsingh is objecting to the progressives not to classical/traditional educators. Perhaps a better way for classical educators to think of this idea is "We teach knowledge so that students learn how to think in order that they not be deceived into thinking the thoughts that the world wants them to think."

Wall calendars for life! 🙌 Digital schedules are like reading on an iPad. 🤢 Paper & pencil calendar is the classical calendar. 👌 I love my Memoria Press calendar! Thank you for the free gift.

Wow, such a great episode. Just when I start to doubt if classical education is the way I want to go with our homeschool, you all come swooping in with these great conversations and give me much confidence. Thank you!

I loved Martin's comments on reading and thinking/writing. I just found a great book on this subject. It is called "First We Read Then We Write: Emerson on the Creative Process" by Robert D. Richardson.

I have to say those calendars are great for primary Calendar time. My daughters love filling in the Calendar time work on the Memoria calendar after reciting or telling them The poems add extra flavor.

Robin Hood is not breaking a commandment. Taking back what was stolen is police work, not theft. If Robin Hood is stealing, than so is every cop who confiscates stolen property (which they do, even when they don't yet know who it belongs to).

You can't teach how to think without first teaching loads of content. I think that these things go hand in hand.

Kate Birbalsingh is talking about something more than just using content to practice skills on. She is talking about indoctrinating kids with British culture. And like me, she's ok with it. There is no education without indoctrination and it's a fool who thinks that there is. Once you accept that you can't help indoctrinating, then you just have to get deliberate about choosing the doctrine. She chooses British culture. I choose Catholicism. Everyone chooses something, even if by default.

I feel I must state my unwanted and disagreeable opinion that MP does children a disservice by being so closed minded about books. I’ve gotten attacked in the Facebook group before for bringing this up. But most homeschoolers, especially those using more literary approaches, know who Elizabeth Yates is. Her books are used in several curriculums. I’ve only read two, but they were very good and had a lot more going for them than the likes of The Moffats and Farmer Boy.

15:25 That is not Emulate at all. I don’t know why google is giving such a terrible definition. Imitate copies or mimics the behavior. Emulate applies the concept or ideology. The little girl imitated her mother by putting her hands on her hips. The little girl emulated her mother by comforting her grieving friend. It’s not about surpassing anything.
