Love it or hate it Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones is a more influential film than a lot of people give it credit for. Did you know it was one of the first feature length films to be presented in IMAX?
But as a result of it's IMAX Presentation, an alternate cut of the film was created that not a lot of people know about.

I have seen the IMAX cut of AotC, but in early 2005 as a way to drum up hype for the pending release of 'Revenge of the Sith'. The consensus from the group of friends I saw it with was that it trims an awful lot of the fat from the running time, which is a good thing if you're already familiar with the movie and the story, but that anybody seeing it for the first time would barely have time to catch their breath because there's almost zero down time. As an action spectacle, the IMAX cut is awesome and I'd recommend it to any Star Wars fan. But there's an awful lot of character- and world-building moments left on the cutting room floor that helped make the original cut feel like a more cohesive story. You're right on the money with your assessment here. :)

I love the IMAX cut of this film. I feel it was much tighter and cut out some stuff that was not necessary. It flowed very well. I wish we could get a copy of this cut released. I remember seeing it with my best friend in November 02. It looked great!

I found this enlightening! I saw it at the zoo (the only IMAX theater near me at the time) and was very disappointed in the presentation. Not only did it cut and trim down scenes, but it was "formatted to fit this screen" with the sides cut off like it was a network television broadcast! I never saw a movie there again. I've always wondered why they cut so much. Now I know! Thank you for this.

I saw the IMAX cut in 2002 at the Luxor hotel in Vegas (imagine Yoda being five stories tall). I can confirm that the description in this video is accurate as far as I can remember. One specific detail I remember from that viewing, was in the Lars homestead exterior scenes, the far desert background had parts of it that were noticeably still images (like a patchwork), as opposed to filmed moving elements.

It hurts my soul to see the attendant handling a filmstrip with his bare hands 2:10. You're supposed to wear cotton gloves to avoid getting your hand oils all over the film strip.

Awesome video!! I grew up with the OT, and was around 28 when AOTC was released. I camped all day in line to see it in the theater and watched it at least 5 times during the original run. Then a few months later, my mother came to visit and wanted to go to an IMAX. AOTC was playing - so I we went. At this time, I'd seen it enough times to know what I liked and didn't like about the movie and the Anakin/Padme scenes seemed awkward and over the top. The CGI in the field and the flying fruit weren't my favorite parts of the movie. I went into the IMAX, not knowing it was going to be edited for time. Watching it in the shortened edit, with much less time spent on Anakin/Padme, and less of the cheesy CGI - I thought this cut was really awesome. I've been watching for the last 20 years for the release of this one, it's crazy that an old IMAX projectionist or theater owner doesn't have a reel sitting around that could be digitized - but I suppose it was more regulated with how unusual the theater experience is for IMAX. Anyway, great explanation and deep dive :) It would be cool to find this edit.

The Original Cut definitely serves the Prequel Trilogy better.

I imagine the biggest reason would be the image quality. As Clones was filmed digitally, the actual image could in no way hold up to a film from a 70mm negative. And not worth the extra cost to re-edit and upscale. Those going to Imax or large format cinemas go for the superior image and sound experience. Digital cinematography was still in its infancy for the U.S..

I saw it in IMAX a few times so when I got it on dvd I had forgotten about the all the bad stuff that was cut lol. When they blew this up for IMAX you could see the pixels in some of the digital mat paintings lol. But at least there was no C3PO in the droid factory.

I knew about the IMAX cut but I didn't want to see a shortened version of ATOC, so I saw it in regular cinemas a couple of times. I remember they added things like the sparks on Jango's jetpack and changed how Padme fell out of the LAAT gunship, while it was still in theaters.

"At last, the Anti-Director's Cut! It makes the Theatrical Version feel like an Extended Version!" In all seriousness, this Cut sounds like it can only be enjoyed if you've already seen the original. At least based on how you've described it, there's multiple points where you just jump ahead in the story & outright skip important stuff. For example, and correct me if I'm putting this together wrong, you go from "The Assassination Attempt on Padme" to "Obi-Wan & Anakin discussing their job to watch over Padme" You skip Palpatine suggesting that Obi-Wan (and thus Anakin) should be the Jedi sent to protect Padme, as well as Padme saying she suspects Count Dooku. Speaking of which, doesn't this mean Count Dooku just appears halfway through the movie? Which then the scene of him conspiring with the Separatists doesn't work as confirmation that he actually is evil, he's simply another bad guy that somehow everyone knows. It really does sound like the opposite of a Director's Cut where instead of getting new scenes that fill in plotholes and/or better explain the story, you're losing scenes which create new plotholes and make the story more confusing. It's cool that AotC got to be in IMAX but I completely understand why this was never released on Home Media considering that George Lucas always wants us to see his latest/truest version of the films. He probably hated this Cut with how much was removed.
