I like your licks approach, not restricted to a system but just add licks vocabulary and apply it to different situations. It's more realistic for slow thinker like me, and surprisingly create more flowing differ lines.

Keep the playing. It sets the tone and adds context to the lesson. I never find it too much. Plus I've enjoyed the progression in your playing from say a year ago. It's grown both technically and artistically. You're literally mastering the instrument before us, using the same method you're teaching us. Proof that what you say and teach work!
@ChristiaanvanHemert5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback and compliments Jason. So how do you feel about videos and you don't know the level of playing of the teacher? Because as I have noted in another comment if you still watch those videos but might turn off a video of mine in which you don't enjoy the playing it's obviously much better for me to not play. Just looking at it from a perspective of growing my channel faster....
@jasonbrodie48275 жыл бұрын
@@ChristiaanvanHemert Yeah I get where you are coming from. If it's a player I haven't heard of ( not a well known artist I listen to) I'm probably skeptical and I'd like to hear the example of their playing. If I want play like it I keep listening. If I don't like it or there doesn't seem to be a concept I can take away and use, I'll switch off. I guess you can't always win. If you don't play, some people might not give you a chance. If you do some people might not like your playing. The first videos of yours I watched was the dominant loops video. I think it came up because I was getting into GJ and searching for KZbin lessons. I subscribed because it was not just an awesome player with some licks I could never play. It was some awesome playing and then a thought out concept I could learn, sound good and then apply. And most importantly to me, make my own.

I think the playing up front is good and helpful, not so much so I can verify the capability of the teacher, but so I can see and here whether I like what I’m going to be learning, and whether it’s at my skill level. I would change the beginning slightly by introducing what you’re about to do, then playing. “Today, I’m going to show you how to use ascending diminished scales with descending minor 6 scales to improvise on Autumn Leaves”... then hit it.

Hi keep it up bro. What you're offering in your videos is priceless. My experience: most of the time i don't know what I actually need.so i end up just looking for a shortcut. Most videos with a lot of views and very appealing titles are not very interesting they don't show were i have to improve=were I'm not good=bad feeling about my playing=I avoid because i don't like. It feels to me that you've developped a small niche of inermediate/good level players (maybe from your violin background). And it seems to that there aren't that many players at that stage. either they've moved on by themselves because they were good enough. Or they're not advanced enough to integrate your material. I love it when you leave your mistakes it shows how to keep working and not getting discouraged. And finally: i personnally believe really good material will only attract people able to digest that material. That is very different from "lots of views". No solutions... sorry. Ready to discuss the topic if you want. All the best

Thanks for your thoughts Emmanuel. I think you might be right, in fact I've been told before that my videos probably can't reach a very large audience because the only reason to watch my videos is when you're willing to really put in some practice. Most people are more happy to watch videos about theoretical subjects because that's something you can absorb without 10 hours of practice :D I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and see what happens!

@@ChristiaanvanHemert a meditation teacher i've had told me "there's a trend around meditation, a hype... but real practice will never be popular". I think it applies to what you're doing. The thing i don't find anywhere are exercices on harmony applied on a tune. Relation between chords and melody, and how to "hear" other melodies beyond the main theme (ex: melody on 3rd, 5th, 6th,...) All the best and be most welcome if you come along in Brussels.

Hello chistiaan ! Im a jazz student and you helped me a lot so far, I´m a big fan. I love the way you make your videos, very human. many people just want a fast answer to the subject. with that being said my advise to u is to make the videos very straight forward: this is the first line, this is the second, etc, without commenting a lot. Because we live in a time where people don't wait, the consumer just wants the content "right now", if they have to wait, they will probably close . I´m saying this thinking about the general public, I love your material. cheers.

I understand that you want more likes. Well, as for me a lot of likes and the most useful tutorials don't always go hand in hand. I like your idea of playing first, so as to show what the outcome of my practicing may be if I follow you through. Again, I probably don't belong to a majority, but a minority who think that striving for popularity comes at a price Here I am, one of those who listen to you for quality and not quantity
@arsene7374 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you misunderstand the KZbin system. More likes = more KZbin recommendations for other people like me, who otherwise would have not discovered this video. More views is indeed more popularity, but most importantly, more income for the creators. This is why they want to grow their channel, for many it's an important source of income. So regardless of what your philosophy on popularity is, if you enjoy a lesson and actually learn from it, the least you can do is like / subscribe, considering it does not cost you anything! Or otherwise, become a patron and support him directly.

If anyone does not want to listen then they can skip straight to the lesson. Personally speaking I do find that your videos contain too much information and I get lost. Maybe you could do a series of shorter videos focusing on one or two aspects of the teaching at a time. Anyway, thank you for your teaching.

Thanks Les. Very interesting! Less info? I can do that and the funny thing is that I already have the feeling I'm giving a little cause you don't want to see what doesn't make it into the video. I'm also intrigued by this sentence "...It also gave me some idea of what the lesson contains and if I am interested...". Of course, that's exactly what I'm going for but it seems that other (very succesfull) channels don't do that. Would that be a reason for you to not watch a video on those channels? Great video as ever Christiaan. You're maybe just weary of your own format, as you have covered an enormous amount of material in a short time, particularly the last year or so. Carrying on the "Less = More" idea. Some ideas I've gleaned from other channels ? - 'Whet the appetite' - Use the performance as a promo video, perhaps a day or two or even a week before the lesson video, whether it be for freeview or a particular patreon level. 'Spread the content' - Normally I tend to run the video of you playing a couple of bars or a line, then pause the video, to try playing the line to get a feel for it. (If I don't pause, i'm playing over your playing!) Maybe you could play a line slowly with metronome, then in real time allow time for us to repeat it. Then play with the backing track but allow us to play a repeat of the line. ( While we play in the gap, you could finger-mime the line for continuity, then adding comments just after the line) 'Virtual one to one' - The more I can keep my hands on the neck and mind focused on your playing, the better. So although gaps and pauses don't make for slick videos, the content might stick some more. It is difficult to follow quick finger position changes on video, and although we can continually rewind and play at slower speeds, this ties up fingers we're trying to play with and interrupts the learning flow. One of your best attributes is your patience and relaxed manner when you are teaching what is a very passionate form of music. so, most importantly, do what feels right - Don't change you !
@ChristiaanvanHemert5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your detailed response Stephen. About the "Spread the content": it's funny because I had the same idea and I tried it with my "Darn that Dream" upload yesterday but that video is performing poorly so it probably doesn't work! About the "spread the content": that is a pretty cool idea but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to keep that up, it would mean that I have to be more structured and thus more scripted (like the short time I did the Soundslice thing) which in turn means that I get tired of making videos and will burn me out. I've decided some time ago now that everything that could burn me out, I can't do. My videos now are perfect for that purpose: totally unscripted and unprepared (except for the TAB which I compile before I start). My videos are usually one take. I only cut out when I have to cough, drop my pick, noise from the street or when I really mess up somewhere! Again thanks so much for your thoughts, I really appreciate you taking the time to do that. Of course also thanks a million for your support on Patreon!
