The scene where the two old ladies take off the umbrella and show who they are, wearing the same clothes, walking and doing human things. Almost blending in seamlessly through the crowd, then the look of letting go of decades of secrets to be who they really are. The scene showing that yes, there are people who are different from you. Gay people living in society for years, pretending to be someone they’re not just to fit in. Showing us that we are human like anyone else, and that it could be anyone, even your own neighbors. This humanizing scene really touched me.

The Aragosta sisters were so sour-tempered throughout the movie until that scene. Always scowling. Never a smile - until they revealed their natural forms. In the end credits we see them with Luca’s grandmother and Alberto and a human kid (seen several times in the film - I’d _love_ to know more about him) all eating gelato cones, and all smiling, even the Aragostas. Being free to come out as who they are changed their whole demeanor, not just their physical appearance. They became happy, and were almost certainly much more pleasant to interact with.

Seeing the movie for the first time I literally did not realize that he had one arm (either because I was distracted by the pasta on screen or I was trying to look at his face to get a beat on his expression) until Massimo brought it up by joking that a sea monster ate it before clarifying that he was born that way. Considering the time period He must have lived through World War II Italy with only one arm, which meant if the wrong people got a hold of him he could have been executed for being an "undesirable".

@COMALiteJ2 ай бұрын
@@ronan-outoftime Since it’s only one arm and not both, it was more likely a birth defect than a genetic abnormality (also his daughter has two perfectly good arms). I suspect that his mother had contracted rubella aka “German” measles while carrying him. That was sadly all too common in those days before the MMR vaccines. If so, he likely did have a right arm at birth, but it was missing one or more bones, so it was amputated while he was in infancy.

What’s _really_ amazing about it is that it was made during the _pandemic lockdowns_ which is why it was released direct-to-streaming and not in theaters (which were closed then). Think about that. The animators and voice actors and such all had to work in near-isolation. We see from video of the actors recording lines that the director was apparently in a room with each actor, but only one actor at a time, and they were distancing. With all that working against them they _still_ put out a masterpiece of _this_ quality.

The end was like one of those moments where you would expect the two people to kiss. Also, I thought of the movie as a metaphor for being accepted and coming to terms with being LGBTQ+. Kinda like that one episode of Sailor Moon when Haruka Tenou had to accept that they were going to be a sailor scout was also them coming to terms Here is how I see it: -winning the scooter = everyday life/goals but with struggles -Them finally showing everybody they were seas monsters = coming out -The other people accepting and then some not (plus the old ladies actually were monsters too) = some people being supportive, some coming out along with them, and some NOT accepting -Mom saying something about some people will never support them but people will = some ppl will be homophobic, but other people will accept you!

Yeah, the movie is very well crafted to leave most things up to the viewer's interpretation. And I don't mean because of shipping characters or anything like that (though there were a very large amount of tropes that seem to be taken from "queer coming of age" type of films, I feel like there's no way that was purely an accident), it was the messages of acceptance and perseverance in the face of prejudice that got me. But i personally think that luca's story is kind of a refrence to someone finding their true colours and learning love themselves for who they are. I love that movie because it reminds me of that childhood innocence and fun you had as a child. I am now thinking more often about those times since I just finished school xD

There are a lot of ways that people can come out of hiding and be themselves. When I was a child I wore glasses and people would call me "4 Eyes" I ended up "losing" every pair of glasses that my parents bought for me. I was 1 of 4 children and only my dad worked so money was tight. I felt like I had to do this to be accepted and to make friends. My parents wanted to help my self esteem so they sent me to modeling school. It did help my self esteem but it wasn't who I really was. I loved science and gardening. Luca means a lot to me. I want my children to feel like being brave and standing up to their bullies by making light of whatever the bully tries to do just like in this movie when the boys stand up and don't hit back but just stand together. Even though we see they are very scared, they play fun. I was sad to see Alberto get punched. I wished that they would have just been able to make the bully feel silly and walk away.

@noihavenoname75513 жыл бұрын
I thought it was friendship too. Watching it I was not thinking about romance. Their love as brothers was very fulfilling :).
@colon52463 жыл бұрын
it still has a lot of subtext that can make it implicit tho
@colon52463 жыл бұрын
like when that Vespa guy says "No one wants you here in this town, we hate you and disgusted by you monsters" even before knowing that they are sea monsters. Or when his mother says," It is like I don't even know you" after he went to surface, and sending him to that see through uncle, does it not scream conversion therapy to you. Also when his Granny says that," Some people will never accept you but ya just gotta find the good ones" like do you not see this? It is not about romance but again they are sea monsters so...... anything is possible. Death of the author, remember?

Although this movie has lots of themes that can be attributed to feeling like an outsider, there is no relationship between any of the characters. The director and storyboard writer said this when discussing if Call Me By Your Name gave any inspiration, “I love Luca’s movies and he’s such a talent but it truly goes without saying that we really willfully went for a pre-pubescent story,” Casarosa laughs. “This is all about platonic friendships.”
@FlicksAndTheCity3 жыл бұрын
Yes that's true, there isn't any romantic relationship between Luca, Alberto or Giulia. Nevertheless, the underlying themes are still in the movie for the audience to interpret for themselves.

The dedication can also be a metaphor about coming out: “This film is dedicated to Alberto Surace, Patty Ann Buchholz Willrett (1974 - 2020), and all the friends who pulled us out of the water and helped us find our way”. 😻
