I've been a old movie buff for 50 years but I had never seen a Dr Kildare film. I have been seeing some other Lew Ayers movies recently and I'm always impressed with him so I thought I'd give them a try. I'm glad I did. An amazing cast - a roster of MGM stalwarts who almost feel like family - and even Grandmama Addams (Blossom Rock - what a wild name). Wonderful writing - lots of sardonic banter between people who really care for each other. Wonderful entertainment if you don't mind suspending your disbelief a little bit. And Lew Ayers just radiates decency. Has he ever played against type? It would be interesting to see.
@missannie19423 жыл бұрын
loge10 I wish someone would answer your question.
@ladywisewolf3942 Жыл бұрын
Well, yes, Lew Ayres did play against "type" in many of his very early films. Just look up his filmography. He played a German soldier in WWI in "All Quiet on the Western Front" , he played a murderous gangster, and a prisoner in a penitentiary. But he was also well known for playing somewhat alcoholic playboys in several films including "Holiday" where he played Katherine Hepburn's brother.
@loge10 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking more of the "murderers gangster" type. In AQOTWF and Holiday ( which I own and love), he still plays very decent people-and I just love him in Holiday.
@Rubi-ll8ss Жыл бұрын
The gangster type he played in wás in Gateway to Hell.😊

Ayers played an out of work actor in Fingers at the Window, where his character is questionable in his motives towards LaraIne Days character. That movie is an underated gem. Windows is. An early Noir as well.The shots were filmed by Harry Stranding, who was a pioneer in Noir Cinematography

Love old B&W movies. Watched all the Dr. Kildare movies many, many times. It just puts me in some sort of mellow mood. Maybe its the times these movies came from. I don't know. And I have to admit I enjoy the Nancy Drew movies from the same period. Sometimes I imagine what it must have been like to go to a matinee in those days to see Dr. Kildare and Lew Ayers is just the best in these movies. Those times in the late 30's as the economy began to come out of depression and before the damn European/Asian wars came to our shores.

There are a lot of theories of why Lionel Barrymore was in a wheelchair, but the consensus seems to be that it was a combination of breaking a hip twice over a period of years and serious arthritis, which made walking very painful. He could get about on crutches for a short period of time but it was difficult. He definitely was one of a kind.

A little bit of trivia: In the scene in the Long Island lunch room where Dr. Kildare is waiting for the bus to arrive, he asks the cook if the busses are on time. That cook was Mickey Rooney's father. Mickey was one of the biggest stars at MGM at that time doing the "Andy Hardy" film series, his father was an out of work ex-vaudevillian . So Mickey would find small parts for him in what ever he could around the studio. Also the creepy ex-nanny who convinces the debutante to see the quack "doctor" was played by Sara Haden, also a part of the "Andy Hardy" series where she had a continuing part as Andy's spinster aunt.
