Yamaha's vintage FM synths are capable of amazing emulations of acoustic brass. To get the most out of a brass patch, you'll need to know how it was designed. The dynamic horn was setup for melodic lines but by changing settings it can be used for different phrasings. Great video. I have a DX7 & a TX81z. Wave # means something in your V50 but not as much for other synths. It would be very helpful if for other 4 op synths like my TX81z if you would also refer to the waveform type such as square or sawtooth, etc.

The V50 uses the the same 8 waveforms as the DX11 and TX81z. So Wave 4 on the V50 is also wave 4 on the TX81z, the numbering of the waves on the TX81z are the same. Actually, the trumpet patch that I play at the beginning was a trumpet patch that was made on the TX81z and then sent to the V50 by midi dump. The 8 wavesforms on the FM synths aren't really analog waves like saw and square. But wave 2 sounds like a triangle but technically it's not. Thanks for asking about this, I didn't realize there could be confusion.

Very nice, thanks for sharing! I saw you using a breath controller. My understanding from reading the TX81Z user manual is that the breath controller uses the Aftertouch MIDI signal. I was wondering if you have any experience if using these brass preset with an aftertouch MIDI keyboard instead. Do they work at all?

I haven't used FM patches with aftertouch. But it's very effective for the VL patches of the EX5. I'm not sure if the TX81z uses aftertouch signal for the BC. I thought they were different midi controller numbers. The dynamics with the BC are great. I only started playing with the BC about a year ago, so it's not like it's for only experienced horn players.

Nice video once again. Bit of a different topic - Do you use RCM synthesis much with the sy99? If so I’d love to see a bit of a demo/tutorial on how you use this possibility with sound design on the sy99

No, I haven't used sampled waves as modulators on the SY99. It doesn't seem to be used much for the SY99's factory sounds.

Well, a CD-ROM holds more than a zip drive. I have a SD card reader for my Emulator but I think people want something tangible. Vinyl records are back, why not a CD-ROM.
