I actually like producing into a bit of passive EQ on the master bus - Bax, Pultec, etc. Deals with the midrange muddiness early and makes boosting mid-range audibility more intuitive. Can easily hear what instrumental parts have low end and top end to remove to make room for vocals, drums, bass, etc. It's made my workflow faster.

It's crazy how big a difference a few little twist of a couple knobs can do to the feel you get from the music as a whole.

As you switched on the eqs, my jaw dropped. Fantastic for songs like this. Thanks so much for another great video Marc, loving it.

I agree in every point. To have an analog gear in the Mix Bus means an added value
@MZ-tm1tw3 жыл бұрын
By using the transformer balanced Pultech Tube EQ you add Harmonic distortion and overtones to your mix that was not in the mix before passing it through the hardware. This can also be done with plug ins check RTA overtone content what happens when passed through UAD Eqp-1 pulltech or Waves EqP1 or Focusrite Liquid Mix old tube 3 eq Emulation based on EQH -2 3/4 band pultech EQ. For some slow songs when you don't need fast attack and relase settings LA2a can work on the masterbuss .You get very warm big sound with alot of Harmonic colour. If you want to balance it out run it in parallel compression so you can mix in how much La2a you want on your masterbuss.

Great vid - Passive EQ' i use are Eckmiller ( i have a few including hp/lp filters). Various RFZ ( i have a few) and 2 White instrument cut only graphics. Just as Mark said, so easy to over-boost thinking nothing happening, then you bypass and its "WOW". Also analogue passives keep the bass as tight as F phase wise - great for vinyl. I love active eq as-well but passives are my foundation eq's - always plenty boost and cut.

i'm designing my own preamp/passive eq since i wanted something that could boost much better than my other eq's, its basically a passive inductor EQ where the inductors are lowpass filters for 3 bands, and capacitors are highpass filters for 3 bands, makeup driven by a 2520, so far its sounding really good and exactly how you describe here, you have to boost a lot to get a lot of change but even a lot of change isn't too weird

Interesting tape recorder he has there. It looks like the cheap Akai 4000D stretched into quadraphonic form. I don't remember seeing those in the 70s. Most of the quadraphonic machines at least had logic controls, and usually supported 10.5" spools. The most basic quadraphonic tape recorder I remember is the Sony one they made by stretching the TC366.
