The SECRET to 20+ MPG! 7.3 Ford Econoline - Testing Fuel Additives - Powerstroke Diesel Fuel Economy

As I've been fixing up the van, I noticed that a lot of products advertise a small increase in fuel economy. I've got some worn injectors and picked up some fuel system cleaning additives to try to extend their life before eventual replacement. I've tracked my fuel economy driving from Colorado to Washington and then on a recent 2,500 mile road trip to Utah. Hi Love your videos. I bought my 95 7.3 powerstroke last year, and drove it about 2000km (1243 miles) home. Got an average about 20 mpg. Pretty satisfied with that. Currently doing some maintenance on it. I saw in the comments that some suggested that you swap to a manual gearbox. I have been thinking the same thing. Have seen some videos about it, so it can be done. But I'm not a mechanic, so it looks a little bit over my head. By the way, can you make a video on changing the belt? And the waterpump?

The lubricant in diesel is much better than when they first did ultra low next run marvel mystery oil in tank for your cheap option also put a whole quart in your oil it will get your injectors clean on the hydraulic side where most people forget about

I've got two quarts of Hot Shot's Secret Stiction Eliminator in the oil right now. I may try Archoil on the next oil change. Lots of folks recommend running automatic transmission fluid in the crankcase oil for a similar effect, but I haven't done much research on the pros and cons of that solution.

Haha yeah for sure. The road trip I did this testing on went from sea level to 5k feet ASL and back to sea level, but the legs that I compared fuel mileage on were pretty flat.

Rather than dicking around with fuel addtives I'd just put a stickshift in it The automatic trans is eating so much fuel that simply installing a manual trans will get it well past 20mpg.

Definitely something to consider when the automatic transmission eventually dies. Thanks for the recommendation. Have you done an auto to manual swap on a van? Wondering about space along side the doghouse for a clutch pedal. It's a bit cramped down there.
