One thing I did is drive a junky car. I drove an old used car to help afford flying. When I see someone with a new sports car I always think they could own a really nice plane instead.

I actually talked about this, but I cut it out because I wanted to stay in my lane (aviation related). I talked about how I don't really drink and I drive a cheap car to help afford the plane, but it felt like I was getting a little preachy and it wasn't exactly aviation related, so I cut it. But I definitely agree, I like cool cars but the one I have is about the most efficient/practical/uncool you can get so I can spend those resources on flying.

Cost to fly do not decrease with hours but the averaged hourly cost does, which is what you meant to say.

As for the mechanic part…if you do enough work with them and you go about it within the regs you can eventually test for your A&P after a couple of years or something like that. Now that’s a future investment of aircraft ownership right there.

Very good points and good information. I have found cost sharing through a small club or partnership to work out really well for me! Plus much more affordable than outright ownership. I drive a beat up over 20 years old vehicle. And keep unnecessary purchases to a minimum. Cheap or free EFB, cheaper headsets, etc. Once I have the income, I'll slowly get all the finer things. But now I just need the avgas money!

Awesome video Travis! I'm not a pilot, nor have I ever really considered getting my license (your videos make me think about it!), but it's really great to see someone so passionate about something that you just find the ways to make it work. It's even more amazing that you take the time to make a video to share it with others. Keep doing what you're doing man, and best of luck!

Hey man, thanks for the support! I saw some of your rocket posts and the stuff you're doing with them is pretty cool. I was into rockets when I was younger, but you take it to a whole new level. Maybe we can trade someday, you show me a bit about how you make rockets and such, and I'll take you up for a flight!

Are you still building time? I finished my A&P and bought a C150 took 4 mo to get it flying again. Flew from Mi to Az and finished all my ratings in the past 4 months now looking at Skydive pilot jobs. And now considering Skybolt next...

You mention the cosmetics. I read about owners spending $20k+ on upgrades such as paint jobs, interior, and avionics ( can sometimes run over $50k). Are these kinds of upgrades mandatory, especially for a non-instrument rated owner? I realize that some major expenses such as engine overhauls, ADs, the ADSB mandate, and perhaps the radios will eventually be required. But are these others really necessary if you just want to fly without breaking the bank?

Short answer is no. You don't need a bunch of glass in the cockpit or a fancy paint job. I have a Garmin 430 and now that I've been flying my plane for a bit I have zero desire to have some big ole touch screen moving map. I have a phone with Avare and an tablet with Avare and that is a free program that does all the same stuff. I have a 100k+ plane and my all in cost is roughly 1800 a month flying an average of 1.5 hours a week. This is financed, fully insured at 125k and I have mine in a hangar. Granted you need the means to pay for the unexpected, but that's all part of ownership. Have a slush fund for sure of 5k and you'll be in a good spot

Since this video seems like airplanes have gone up like lot of things. Early 1960's Cessna 150's have been kept outside for 20 years are selling for 36-38k now used to be able to get these old 150s for 17-20k. Really nice 1970's 150s selling for 60-80k. I'm forced now to look at light sport ultralight type aircraft I can afford down in the 20k range.
