So I'm a guy who likes audio I appreciate sound design and know and take it's importance into account. But I've never given one sound effect that much depth, even thou I had other sound elements around it. Fantastic video!

Great video guys! For me, I LOVE sound design. I think it's one of the most fun aspects of post-production.

I agree. It feels the most experimental and certainly boosts the feel of the film from something decent to some MEGA

Great tips! I bought myself a Rode NTG-3 and a Zoom H5. It works great. I have just started experimenting with sound design. I see now how important it is and how much better my films becomes. Before, I just used music with my video. Now after I sound design the videos, people could watch the film without music and it will still be entertaining! When you watch movies, you don't think of all the amazing sound designed that has been done, but when the sound isn't there you can hear that something is missing :-)

Great setup! We have an NTG3 coming in the post in a few weeks (MyRodeReel) that I can't wait to use. Great sound design is invisible, it's only when you DONT have it, that you start to notice something off. Thanks for always tuning in and commenting, VP!

Have you tried hitting a bit of polystyrene with an sm-57 instead of cushions? Just tap it. Really bass heavy.

Excellent - trying to record a chair collapsing for a soundtrack and finding it hard to make build to a loud crash without clipping any tips?

Try putting a limiter on that track. A very tiny quick clip in the audio wont necessarily destroy your sound, but it is best to avoid if you can. A limiter should do the trick! Set it to -0.5 dB.

Excellent! Sound is very important in movies and I'm very happy to see your process. 2 Quick Questions: - Do you use Audition or prefer Layer-ing in Premiere - (For this video that I just watched) how did you make the "............." (dot-dot-dot) waveform appear so nicely on screen for us to see? Plugin?

We tend to use audition once we have a picture lock. The production sound, maybe with a few sound effects thrown onto the timeline in premiere (for editing purposes) then we go straight into audition for all the foley, SFX, design elements and any music that needs altering. For most projects, the premiere timeline just includes dialogue, but I have seen a lot of editors adding sound effects into their timelines to help them get the flow and pace of the edit. Everyone is different, but nobody is wrong, as long as the outcome is the same haha. The waveform: I followed a few tutorials online to create it in After Effects. I used the Spectrum plugin and toyed around with the parameters. This video follows the same techniques: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYKQeJ-abrqLbKc Once I had the AE comps with the spectrum graphics, I then imported them into Premiere and overlayed the waveforms on top of the video footage.
