The best is to cross the male sahelian goat and the local female you will have the average height and weight you are looking for. I have done it before and I know it'll work. And my second suggestion is to go for Sokoto red or Maradi red (they're the same) you can cross them directly with the Kalahari red or the Boar goat because they have the characteristics you are looking for. I hope to see you trying this . All the best my brother

Yes, is a good initiative fred. I started with one saheliean buck and west African dwarf females. Now i have the right size n height to cross with a boer or khalahari. Still gathering funds to make a purchase. This is the best approach. I've tried n tested it for 2yrs now and it works. You are on the right path. Keep moving

Nice work Mr. Fred. My idea for achieving this would have been to cross your sahelian females with a Nubian male to give the offspring more weight, height and milk production capacity which also translates to bigger kids. Then use the females of that cross breed to mate with a boer male. That's the best 3-way cross. Another hack would be to use a younger boer goat of say 5 months (which should be smaller than a mature male and present less size difference) to cross the WAD goats. It'll still transfer all the right genes without being a physical danger to your females.

Fred I'm doing same with the exact formula you're using. Last year I got 10 Nannies and 1 Buck from Burkina, thanks to my school mate who now lives in the North of Ghana. From experience I should tell you that, you would struggle to find a tall enough local goat to mount your Nannies. The ideal situation would be to buy a Sahelian Buck and let him mount the local Does. I currently have 4 mixed kids. However, you can cut the first part of the crossing, as there already exist a lot of the mixed breed (Sahelian X Local Goats) in Ghana. Get in touch and I'll explain further my process. We could compare notes

We carryout cross breeding for a no of reasons, but most time people only capital on size improvement. Beyond size for this project its possible for one to come up with a new breed of goat that will combine features like adaptability with improvement in size and weight. As we know, our WAD goat is small on all fronts, in height, size and weight but when its comes to adapting, they can trive in almost all weather condition unlike others. The sahelian on ther side have a good height but also less in weight just like the WAD, while the boer is high in weight and size but still lacks the height. As we know height is one of the important factor in goat pricing in most markets in west africa. Combining these three goat breeds will product a new line of breed that will thrive well in our weather condition here and also have a good weight to go with it. So it think its a good idea to cross WAD first with the sahel goat before using the exotic breed on the cross breed. Good job, keep it up.

@nelsonbarranda4150

A tenet in crossbreeding is that, the progenies (the kids) will likely get their size from the sire(male)... then the female better be easy kidding. If the sire is from a big, fast growing breed, better have enough, good and nutritious feed for the moms for her to produce the milk needed by the fast growing kids. Same will be true when you triple cross this to a boer. If your mission is to upgrade small native breeds, this objectival approach is fine. If you want profitable operation fast, start with Savanna crossed with galla, then cross the progenies with KR and/or Boer. Galla is good sized and good milker...reasonable to cross with either KR or Boer. You will have fertility/fecundity, hardiness, adaptability, size, milking capacity, meat quality and heat/dry/ pest and desease resistance. Gud luck

Another advice I'll give you is to feed the local and sahelian goats very well so that they can add good weight before you allow the boar, Kalahari red or savannah goats mount them. Another thing is that you will have to get lots of milk from your cows to suppliment for the kids of the crosses, you know that they are offsprings of the exotic breeds and will be drinking lots of milk that their mothers won't be able to produce. Udeze Anthony.

I am just wondering if this is a agricultural tourism or an actual farm. We saw cows(didn't work), poultry(didn't work), Pigs(never started), fish pond(didn't start), local goats(too small), kalahari & boaer goats(not yet successful), massive goat pen(updates pls), overgrown grass, broken down machines and now Sahelian goats and crossbreeding experiment. Guys, I am not hating here, I am a fan of all farmers and I am a farmer myself. WHERE ARE YOU GOING FRED? I/we are confused as to the direction of this channel and possibly your farm. Other channels (Value Farm, FarmUp, etc) have a path we can see and follow. Where are we going here? Is it an adventure or it's really farming? I am always hopeful that you succeed but I believe anyone who actually wishes you success should also have clarity in your direction. "TRANSPARENCY " . I just fear that your excitement and your ability to fund these things are blinding you. I hope i am wrong. If I followed your example every step of the way from when you started this channel, I will be so broke and lost by now. Those who followed FarmUp(poultry), Value farm(pigs/goats), snail & Rabbit farms you just covered are struggling and growing in those particular disciplines. Which discipline are we following here? I continue to pray you find that diamond 💎 and become a very successful and profitable business. God's blessings in your ventures ❤

It’s either you clearly don’t understand what Fred meant by L&D farm the reasons for doing what we are doing. First off Fred didn’t fail at Poultry or Cattle farming. We simply sold most of our cattle to focus on commercial goat farming. And we still have cattle at the farm. Deciding to stop investing in poultry isn’t also a failure. Please get your facts right and if you want to truly understand what we are doing, why don’t you come have a one-on-one at the farm? That way I’m sure you will appreciate more the work we are doing here and of course as much as we are transparent we cannot record every single activity at the farm so sorry if we are not able to show you the daily activities happening at the construction of the commercial goat pen

@FarmingInAfricaGhana Didn't work doesn't mean "failed" just so you follow and it's ok to ask for a sense of direction and to know your directions. It's always seen to be negative if one asks tough questions especially in our African cultures but my intentions are really not that. If you look at it from a positive/reasonable view you will see why I(maybe others) are having a hard time following. I am still a fan, I still want to see success and will still contribute my ideas. You ask us to comment below hence I comment. Some of these comments actually helps push you guys to actually succeed. Like I said, I failed for 15yrs to now be successful in last 5yrs as a rancher. I see my image in most of what you guys do and that maybe why I come from a different perspective than many other viewers. If you can't follow then I apologize for the unnecessary noise.
