I really appreciate this. This is my first year of growing basil. It has bolted already. But I did manage to get some cuttings and strike them using the same method you show here. I didn't know about clipping it in this way and I was wondering why my plant was no so "FULL". It only grew straight up, so from now on I will be doing what you have shown here. I have saved the video for reference and will be sharing it with a friend, WHO, funnily enough gave me a MINT BASIL PLANT! and it's doing so well! Thanks again! this is not the first or second video of yours I have watched and I keep having youtube randomly recommend your videos so I think you have earned this SUB from me. Thanks for all you do and share!

Most Italians I know plant it straight into the ground. I do as that is how my parents did it. You can get cutting off the main plant and put it in water to get a root system, and plant it and keep doing that all year round. I wouldn't keep just one plant, have a couple of plants near each other, and they will survive better. You can always keep them in your kitchen in water and pick them off when you need it. Change the water or top up. Even add some cutting from your garden to keep in the kitchen every few weeks change over.

I just throw basil seeds all around my garden. Even on paths. They just grow where ever, and I can just pull out the whole plant if I need some, or harvest the tops off the many plants around my garden. Basil is super easy to work with.

I've been growing Basil like this for many years, and having grow mats and grow lights that makes a massive difference to get your harvest going just before Melbourne's "Spring" hits (Melbourne weather ... Ugghhh) - Love the videos, keep them coming :)

I grew basil from seed for the first time this year. (Sydney) I sowed a lot of seeds directly into a bucket with good potting soil. Almost all turned into seedlings, so now I have a way overcrowded pot. Thank you for the info! I probably would have treated the whole thing like a supermarket pot of basil and just had them all compete for resources. Now I know to thin down to a few strong and well placed plants.
@punchpineappleАй бұрын
That's good to know about the supermarket ones. I bought a basil plant from woollies 11 months ago and put it on the kitchen window sill, which is pretty shady. It's still growing - not well, but it's totally the little basil plant that could. I'll see if I can grow some from some seeds I collected.

We grow basil in our tomato bed at the community garden. They were Bunnings punnet with 6 plants. They are all doing well, & look like your better healthy ones, not spindly at all. Other good successes for us this year are cucumbers, capsicums, blue lake beans, eggplant and a few others that are really healthy & just about bearing.

I grow veggies and herbs indoors for a few years now. Never had a problem getting basil to germinate and grow. The problem I had was keeping them alive after a few harvests. They are very “light” finicky. I finally realized my basil plant prefers being under grow lights as opposed to a sunny window sill. Strange, but it works and I keep pruning/ harvesting and it is still going strong!

My problem growing basil turned out to be that I was letting the soil dry before watering again. It turns out it wants wet feet, so I started giving it a little sip each morning instead and it's been thriving ever since. I do have it under an LED light and next to a window, and it climbs up into the light, while the tomatoes lean wayyyy toward the window.

Maryborough QLD here. Basil grows all year round and it's essentially unkillable. I know because I can kill mint lol. I can whipper snip the stuff. Now coriander. That's a different story. Bolts within days sometimes sooner. Helllllp 😆 Love your channel btw. I've learned a lot.

Helpful video, thanks! I am in the US in KS and I have always direct sewn Basil in the garden with no soaking and have had no issues with enough plants coming up except this last year which was a very strange one weather wise. I appreciate the tips on pruning as I was never sure about that. I mainly use mine for Pesto.

Definitely threw my brain for a loop when you said start in August. I'm in the USA (Florida). That's our February I think. Though I do think basil could grow all year round here. We don't get much of a winter.

My mother has grown purple basil right in front of her house year-round for almost 50 years in Atlanta. You can definitely do it in Florida.

I cannot say this enough, if you are producing a lot of herbs etc and cannot use them straight away, FREEZE them. They can be frozen as is in a little zip lock bag, they can be frozen in oil in same,, or you can process them into pesto etc. I had a lot of fennel leaves this year and I used the dehydrator to dry them off and then powdered them, put into a zip lock back and froze it, stays loose so can take out as much or as little as you like. Over abundance of tomato, same, I do not process them I simply put them on a baking tray in the freezer, once frozen pop into zip lock bags. I had enough from last summer we have only just finished them. You can either defrost and the cores and skin come out or you can start to cook them down and the same thing happens. I do the same with all excess produce, I prep it, freeze it on a tray, bag it. It means you have all your ingredients ready to go so no extra prep when you are really busy or tired. Hubby bought a basil as we didnt have any left, once he finished with it was as you said, cut it all the way back and kept it on the window sill, picking off at the nodes and it is now happily growing in the ground. Thanks for the channel.

Yes! I've just figured out this year how easy it is to freeze or dehydrate extra and have plenty for later, and I feel so silly for how much I've wasted over the years. I've started doing it with produce from the market too.
@MP-dm1og3 күн бұрын
@@notashroom We do it also with market produces also, have taught our kids (young adults) this and has saved them all a lot of money. I also find it much easier than canning. Just goes to show we are all constantly learning.🙃

I got mine to grow both from seed and from cutting. From what I learned from the past yr growing Basil it's best to grow them in a shaded area through the Seed method. While using NON CHLORINATED water for cuttings and make sure no blemishes on the stems and 45° angle must be observed. So far I've grown 4 varieties but the only 1 I grew from seeds were the Genovese Cultivar hoping to get some seeds from the other varieties though

My Basil in North Waikato, NZ has been very slow despite hot days of late. Will try adding more fertiliser- I didn’t use premium potting mix. They’re only 1cm high and have been in for over a month (from seed). I got 100% germination tho 😊

Agree about the legginess of seedlings from Bunnings - especially their inhouse grown ones. Seeds work for me better than cuttings (maybe im just stupid lol), genovese, greek, red one, thai etc. Anyone know why holy basil seed and plants dont generally seem to be available locally in nurseries etc?.

3:13 Really? I do that all the time🤗 Cut the pot into four pieces and then separate 10-20 healthy plants out of it. You just have to defoliate and crop the pant down to the third node, once it got a hold🤗

How to stop rats eating Basil.
@JW-br5ndАй бұрын
Make a border/ barrier around the base of the basil using those sticky cardboard mats. Make it so the rat has to walk on the sticky surface and with a bit of luck it will get stuck. I had cockroaches eating my rose at night and that's how I solved that one.
