Bud Powell said, learn the melody, slash, the song well. Regarding comping...isn't Jazz a conversation.....? There are some people who won't listen to others opinions and will talk over others while they talk. Over comping is good. We have to recognize rude people. Another approach to limiting or when, Thelonius Monk said, don't play his part, that is what the piano plays. Go figure. Know the song, and know how to have a covesation without being irrelevant.
