Consistent practice of the fundamental principles of art will get you the results you are dreaming of. This is true, but that consistency is not always easy to achieve.
I think a lot of us judge ourselves for not being consistent enough with the things we want to do, whether it’s art, fitness or whatever. This implies that consistency is an innate characteristic, and if we lack consistency, it’s simply a defect.
However, I’ve come to learn that consistency is based on a few skills, and we can learn those skills. I hadn’t worked on those skills at all, so it’s no wonder consistency used to be a challenge for me. Surprisingly, staying ‘motivated’ is definitely not one of those skills. Fighting against self-doubt is also not one of those skills.
I hope you enjoy the video! Let me know what you think in the comments below :)

The most important thing I've learnt about motivation is that is happens after you start. Not before, after. Once you get that through your head, it's a game changer.

One of the weirdest things I've noticed is that I always feel like I don't draw enough and I end up feeling like I should quit, but I never do. I always end up being brought back to it despite the procrastination and lack of discipline. It's something I've slowly built up over time, but I've fallen in love with making art despite my relationship with it seemingly being complicated. Lot of it I think is that my skill doesn't match my expectations or tastes in aesthetic a lot of time, so I often times feel displeased by the final product. It's a matter of wanting to find satisfaction in an end product, and not feeling satisfied after hours can genuinely be draining creatively, and motivationally.

Yeah I know - it can be tough. You have the art bug. It’s chronic and you will never get rid of it! Fortunately, it’s a wonderful thing to have. In terms of beautiful outcomes, have you worked extensively on your fundamental skills before trying to create something that looks cool? Eg if you like illustration and paintings, have you done tons of super simplified value studies?

@@lovelifedrawing It's actually something I'm starting to do and it's interesting. Something that's made me look at things differently is how sometimes I don't need to use the full spectrum of light to convey form, and prior to realizing this, things were seemingly cluttered and overcomplicated. Something I was taught was to actually pick and choose specific values from a scale that way shapes are easier to distinguish relative to other shapes with a different set of values.

I find that associating daily practice with my other habits really helps. For instance, it is my custom to drink coffee quietly for the first 30 minutes of my morning. I started taking my coffee with a sketchbook and a random toy to draw. My beautiful, young bride and I like to watch a little TV with the kids before bed. So I set up a tray with a sketch pad and some photo references of hands on my phone and I sketch hands while we watch. None of these are done to create fantastic works of art. But it has become part of the daily habit and routine. The biggest trick is to make it harder to not do it than it is to do it. Then the easy path becomes the winning path.

Last two years, I pushed myself to draw a lot, I managed to increase my drawing practice hours by a lot I had a lot of burnouts and artist blocks but at the moment I can sit down and work for hours easily, it was so extreme that I drew almost everyday those two years with only some breaks on Easter and Christmas. This year though I decided to take a lot more breaks and draw when I feel like it and take it easy, just enjoy it more. This year is my year of balance I guess and I decided I won't mind if I don't draw that many hours since it'll be my career for life, a year "break" is no problem.

My easy steps: Switch off wandering thoughts. Switch on drawing and dream modus. If it doesn‘t work: Put in some crazy ideas. Maybe try out something completely different to practice. I conditioned myself for: Doubts are my trainers and they actually want to say: Just do it. ✨:)

Lovely honest video about the struggle of daily practice. For me, the main reason I don't paint as much as I would like to is procrastination. And that voice inside my head that says that it's for nothing anyway, will never amount to much so why bother. But procrastination is my main nemesis. I work a regular 9 - 5 job and at the end of the day, after dinner, whipping out my easel, setting up my painting gear and putting an hour or two in is so much harder than chilling on the couch and watching a movie. What kind of helps for me, is the thought that painting is also good for my sleep, better at least than watching that rectangular box with 10.000 impressions a minute and blue light that wakes me, etc. Painting soothes and brings me down from a hectic day and makes me sleep better, or at least so I believe! And even though painting for an hour isn't much, it's better than nothing and does make progress albeit little baby steps. Now plein air painting, that's a whole nother beast... many hurdles to overcome there, direct public perception being one of them.

Great Video - one tip more: If you feel that fire burning, don't get burned out because you only practice and grind fundamentals. You are an artist, create art, explore, have fun in the end it is about having fun, expressing yourself. This is not a sprint, you dont have to grind them fundamentals, start creating now, check what you are unhappy with, do skill based practice. :) Peace!

There are people who can just do '15 hours a day' grind and there are 'burst of brilliance with 15 hours resting after' people. Now imho what makes them different is the strategy to deal with mental/phisical clutter that keeps piling up in our lives. If you can organise yourself than you can probably focus for longer, and if you can't than you probably live your life in ups and downs (overwhelmed or underwhelmed but seldom _whelmed_ 😊) .

Spot on. Try (and mostly succeed) to do about 40 minutes a day. 3 drawings, one about 20 minutes, 2 about 10 minutes. Not caring about perfection, just building skills. Find it easy to prioritise this time in my day after a year of working up to it being a habit. Date every one and note what media I am using. The real motivator for me is occasionally flicking through the sketchbooks comparing the drawings. The latest is not always the best, but when it is, it stands out. I could sit here and write a thousand words about my current experience with drawing, but it's probably better that I mention that it is pretty much exactly a year since I discovered your channel and my drawing has improved markedly. I don't need much motivation, but man this was a very thoughtful discussion of doubts that are common when it comes to creativity, and without a doubt there will be people who are struggling who will benefit from watching this video.

Drawing is a tough skill to learn because it wasn't something we were taught straight out of the womb. We have to start at an infant level and work our ways up. I also try to see drawing sessions as similar as a workout session. I like to exercise because I feel good about myself afterwards and I know it is good for me, weight loss would be awesome too but that can't be the main goal or I will just become frustrated with how long it is taking to get there. Same thing with drawing, I like it because I get a feel of accomplishment afterwards and I know that with time I WILL get better but that is a long term goal and it shouldn't be my main focus. Thank you so much for your videos, they have helped me a lot!

Such a wholesome video! 😂It was fun but also informative ✏️⭐✨thank you for sharing your insights about the mindset we need to have to keep arting🌈 I 100% agree with putting ourselves to work regardless of the thoughts we might have. Yesterday I had a great time drawing because I just went for it before self doubt entered the chat. Today I couldn't start practicing early and is crazy how the mind goes berserk and suddenly all the good work I did a day before seems like it never happened🔥But I'm learning to be mindful and not letting that kind of narrative controls me 😸✏️🌷

I just wanted to say that your videos always resonate with me and are always so helpful to me. When I first started drawing, I used to focus solely on my technical skills and wouldn't let myself draw or paint if it wasn't for practice, and a year or two ago, I started to let myself create all the ideas I've had in my head. The problem is that I found myself on the other side of the spectrum. I've been having a really hard time getting myself to sit down and work on my fundamentals. And I'm really starting to see it in my art. My "eye" is improving, but my actual skills are majorly lagging behind. So anytime I make something, my "self-doubt" voice gets really loud, and it's even harder to sit down again later. So then, it's even harder to sit down and practice the fundamentals. And then I definitely catch myself in that "overcompensation" mindset and burn myself out quickly. I started meditating last year for a month or two for mental health related reasons (but I ended up stopping because I started forgetting to do it), and after watching your video and reflecting on that time, I realized that during that time, I was more creative than I have been in a while, so I will have to start meditating again and working on that skill. This was an extremely long way of saying that I really appreciated this video! It's really good advice that I am going to start trying to incorporate into my life.

For me, I don’t think starting with line of action makes a figure drawing stiff. In my experience it actually helps make your figure drawing poses stronger or even dynamic whether from life or reference . Any tool is useless in the wrong hands. It must be felt not just be drawn with weak curves. Learn it - gestural drawing will be easier. 😊

Love this video Kenzo. You've tackled lack of motivation from a different angle and it has resonated with me. I've realised recently that my problem is that I want to draw daily but don't feel I can spare enough time, because my mindset is 'creating a finished piece'. So I'm slowly trying to train myself to start drawing with the idea of just getting the gestural marks down or only getting the torso outlined, not completing the whole figure.

Kenzo, you're making me buy more and more books (first Jake Spicer's new book and now The Mind Work Out). When it comes to meditation, I would strongly suggest ditching all those fancy apps and either looking up in-person guidance or geting some quality books on the subject. My two book recommendations (sorry for not providing any links but is seems KZbin doesn't like them in the comments): 1) The Mindful Geek by Michael Taft - very approachable, great for beginners. This guy is the real deal. 2) The Mind Illuminated by Culadasa - this one is more hardcore in general and in recommended daily sitting time (45 minutes) but on the other hand offers very structured and clear path for a more serious practicioner. Even with only 15 minutes daily to spare, this is life changing stuff.

This is an old video, so I don't know if this is relevant, but... On the topic of meditation, one of the most useful approaches I have found is NOT the 'empty your head' type. I have used some guided relaxation techniques that follow some simple patterns. Start from the top of your head and find a tense spot on your skull. Release it, as if it can just float away from you. Then pay attention again, find another tense spot. If you need to, you can move it, stretch your brow or your jaw, rotate your neck, etc. But simply be mindful of a tension, take comfort and pleasure in releasing it to float away for a time. As you release one, you notice another standing in the way. Relax it, and release it. Continue over your face, neck, torso, arms, legs, until you cover the whole body. You get good at it and start anticipating ahead. As you do it, you start to feel limp, as if you have released whole muscle groups to float away for a little while. At any point, if you feel the need, it is totally OK to pause or 'wake up'. Now, why do I find this effective? Because you aren't trying to empty your head, you are automatically being mindful, and learning to notice the little changes in tension. As you get used to a routine of doing this, you notice that you DON'T NEED to spend a lot of time doing it. You teach yourself to return to that state very quickly. I found that it was much easier to 'empty' my head at the end of this process, to be OPEN to those random thoughts rather than see them as an intrusion. Even during everyday activities, you can take advantage of it. If you notice tension sneaking in, you can do a micro-meditation to respond. What is that? You just pause for a moment, and let yourself run along that same pattern that you do in a longer meditation, and let a wave of tension flow away, from the top of your head, across your face, neck and down. Notice any particular tension? You'll almost certainly already have a trick (lifting your eyebrows, trying to wiggle your ears, stretch your jaw, etc) to relax that area. And in your mind, you think, "I want that relaxed feeling right now." The process is partially hypnotic, because you are teaching yourself a routine of relaxation, training yourself to notice and release tension to get to that relaxed state. Even when I don't do the full meditation, I often run through a quick scan when I go for a walk, or before I sit down to do something like drawing or writing that I have been looking forward to. You just notice, "Huh, why is my brow or the back of my neck tight? Well never mind, I'll just let that go."

Tbh I tried to quit more than once and I just feel so bad about it. I feel guilty for not drawing. Like I'm still a beginner and it's not always fun but I still feel bad when I don't practice

Yeah i relate to this. I can't really help what I think or feel though and maybe i'll feel guilt or have self-critical thoughts. the thing i can control though is how i engage with that and what i do. so i can accept it all, and then pick up my pencil and draw or whatever i really care about doing. this approach to how i treat my brain has been a big deal for me personally, but of course different things work for different people

Love that new logo of yours :D Habits and rituals are what make it work for me, too (as others have commented here)... following the same routine every morning. It just feels like home after a while. You're not super-excited all the time, but you return anyway without thinking, day after day. The other part for me is to do tons of fairly quick sketches. No pressure to achieve a masterpiece, and lots of reps. This keeps the process fluid and enjoyable, something to look forward to every day.

This video made me realise my greatest doubt is that I won't progress and learn, and that all this work will be for nothing. It really affects me, as I expect and want progress each time, but that's rarely possible. Like your meditation example, I think I have to reframe my expectations and see art primarily as fulfilling in and of itself, even though there's a part of me that still wants to see progress. Thank you for making such a great video!

One of the reasons that we fail at these things is because we rely too heavily on will power and self motivation. New Years resolutions never work out because they’re always some vague epithet with no clear goal or practical plan on how to achieve it. Saying you want to lose weight and get fit is all well and good but…how much weight? What do you mean by fit? Without clearly defined goals we inevitably lose focus and our will power just isn’t strong enough. Same with saying “I want to get better at art”, okay but how? What do you want to improve? If our desired outcome is too nebulous or too ill -defined we will never stick to it because there’s nothing to stick to. But if you clearly define what success means the you can come up with a plan on how you’re going to achieve that goal. Better yet you can break it up into smaller goals that are easier to achieve. Keep track of those successes, no matter how small. If it takes you say 1 minute to do a full figure gesture, can you get it done in 59 seconds by the end of the week?
