One additional point - if you are removing old sealant that is silicone, you need to remove 100% of it. Nothing sticks to silicone - even new silicone sealant won't stick to old stuff. Make sure you thoroughly clean the surface after removing the old sealant with a degreaser like acetone so the new stuff will make a good bond and last a while. Thanks for these videos!

I'd say to never use silicone, not at all. There's no reason to use it, it just causes headaches and flying tools. It absolutely does not work under the waterline.

As a plumber ive been using silicone sealant for 20 years and taking pride in my caulking lines to get them perfect every time ! A big improvement for me are those soft plastic/rubber spatulas in different sizes i get them from my local plummer depot but they are simmilar to "kuuqa silicone scraper on amazone" , in combo with special silicone wiping spray or just some soapy water in a spray bottle works perfect every time, they now even have them with a longer handle for places your fingers cant reach! Love your channel by the way! Seen every vid 🤗 greetings from Belgium europe

Thank you for a terrific video. Now that times are getting tougher I've seen a lot of budget boat owners buying the cheapest grade of sealants & never consider the application. Nanyang people think that it's all the same in the tube so why worry. In a salty environment sealants are very important but it gets pushed onto the back burner. Many don't think of salt water migration on the vessel floor & soaking into the stringers, transom, or supporting marine plywood u til there stepping on mush. Great video guys & thanks again, TMP from N.J.

try laying down the sealant then spray it with ammonia based Windex. When you tool the sealant, the excess will not stick to the Windex. We use this technique with silicones and other sticky things. Bonus it that it tools out super smooth and retains plenty of sheen.

I used your wet technique when I removed and replaced a bunch of brittle plastic through hull fittings. I’ve seen you do it in some of your other videos using a citrus type degreaser. It worked great to clean up 4200 and make it look like a factory job!

Great info brother! I build Screen Enclosures for a living and use a lot of caulking. I know my products are different than boat sealants, but also very similar in how you want your finished product to look. Your video is a perfect explanation on good technique. Also, good to see you have your 3M in a refrigerator, a lot of folks dont know that.

To keep sealant, better than the freezer; fill the cap with grease, squeeze some sealant out onto a rag then immediately put the cap on. When it's time to use it again just waste the first little bit that's in the neck of the tube. The grease keeps the air out. I've kept 5200 and 4200, silicone, etc.. for months and used it multiple times doing this. It is important to squeeze the top little bit out just before putting the cap on, you want to remove any sealant that has already had some air exposure so it doesn't start curing and cure the whole tube. Just be careful not to crease the metal tubes, that can cause a hole and the whole tube will cure.

Great video. Good pointers. Like the new format you are doing in the video. Question I saw you had your 3m 4200, 5200 in a fridge or freezer, does that help to keep the tube usable? That stuff us expensive and within a few days seems to dry up the tube and make it unuseable. I have tried putting the open tube in a vacuum bag and that seemed to help. Wondering aboit your method in the fridge though.

From a window installer, tape line every time for much cleaner and neater lines. Doing it with just your finger can smudge the sealant giving uneven line. If your using your finger use saliva to stop sealant sticking to your finger.

I'm really glad I stumbled upon this video. Which sealant do you recommend that is white and won't mold/mildew. Is black the way to go now. I redid my fuel hatch 3 years ago but it's covered in black mold and won't clean up. 3m sealant yellows even the uv version will. Boat life has good reviews

Aaron is that last one,one foot caulking and then wiping with wet finger or dry. I almost did it like that I did the whole length and came out like crap. also you can go to Home Depot and it says 100% silicone 10 ounce tube is the same as any Marne 100% silicone same thing it’s only like 10$ never had a problem with it. Good tutorial even for my old ass been siliconing since 77 I got my first 12’ semi vee w Evinrude 9.9 first time I been instructed by a areal professional thx Aaron JT Hooked n Rolling Offshore 🇺🇸🇺🇸❤️‍🩹🐟🐠🎣🛥

@@BornAgainBoatingahh, bummer, what would your second choice be that I may be able to get my hands on? Also, random question for the Speedo pick up on leading edge of lower unit. Occasionally I get gunk stuck in it and I clear it out with a real small drill bit, twisting it by hand. Unfortunately, last time doing so, it broke off in there!! It’s been like 2 season since it happened. How hard would it be to get it out and how much stuff would I have to take apart?

I really recommend against using silicone. You cant paint it, you cant sand it, its hard to remove and just causes headaches, there's also much much much better sealants and bedding compounds. I use sika 291, its the goto where i'm at, does the same job as 3m 4200. There is pretty much no reason to ever use silicone on a boat
