the Petrucci solo from Afterlife, it seems to be using a similar techinque, but I never understood if that maniac picks all the notes or if there are a few pulloffs as well

Marty came out with this concept on a lick from Jason Becker's Eleven Blue Egyptians (3 min 32 sec part) which he co-wrote and played as a guest.
@ShreddingFinn
@ShreddingFinn 2 жыл бұрын
If you ask me, the hardest thing about that lick isn't the speed, its the stretch. Try playing the same pattern in one position and you'll see. I recommend a shorter scale guitar if possible

The solo from Dokken - Into The Fire. That one part. You know what I mean. The ascending pattern. It may not be in the same league as a Marty lick, but I've never heard anyone else play it correctly...sometimes not even George. lol

What are the secrets to rest of that solo and his feel though? The odd timings, the weirdest bends and whatnot. I always thought this lick was the simplest one of them although demands speed.

@@RL10 I've also heard the Bogner Fish was used on RIP. Would make sense it was around for CTE as well. Their racks for the CTE tour consisted of VHT 2150 power amps, CAE 3+ preamps, and BBE sonic maximizers. Apparently they both had Yamaha SPX90 preamps in those racks for leads. Who knows how much, if any, of that stuff wound up on the record though.

huh. After trying to learn this part by alternate picking however my hands felt like doing, I ended up choosing to hybrid pick it to avoid stumbling over it. Funny how that works.

Funny thing is - as great and brilliant this lick might be - its far from the hardest part of the solo. For me the “sweep” section that leads into the riff mentioned here is far more difficult.

That's sort of fascinating. I got that part down literally a YEAR before I managed to pull off this part. And then it was another year before I wrapped my head around accurately playing the descending run after it. 😂 It's so interesting how different people find different parts more challenging than others. All down to subtle differences in our playing styles I guess!

Thank you for sharing. It’s always been struggle watching how Marty plays guitars. He’s one of my all time favorite guitarist but his picking hand and how he holds the pick and executes his lines makes me feel uncomfortable….. it looks so awkward and clumsy yet the sounds we hear are anything but…

@@LeonTodd I laugh when I listen to interviews with Marty and how he hates the term “sweep picking” yes he’s not sweeping like Mike Batio but an arpeggio is an arpeggio and the execution of it often has that sweeping effect… or I guess you could call it sequence down picking?
