Here's where a change in the law should happen. Allow delivery ebikes to have more power but keep the 15.5mph limit. Those hills all day would be tough.
@timscott3027
@timscott3027 6 ай бұрын
There is an l1e-a regulation that is 15.5mph and up to 1000w but no one in the UK understands this and knows if it's actually legal here.
@baconbuttties
@baconbuttties 6 ай бұрын
@@timscott3027 It classes them as Mopeds...These vehicles, regardless of the precise mode of power assistance, are classified as mopeds in Great Britain and like any moped, type approval has been a requirement since 2003. Depending on the maximum power and speed the vehicles will be categorised in Europe as L1e-A (not exceeding 1000 kilowatt or 25 kilometres per hour) or L1e-B (not L1eA, and up to 4 kilowatt and 45 kilometres per hour).

@@baconbuttties this is the real issue. Type approval is there for a purpose, as long as it meets the needs of the purpose, and so it is the e-bike manufacturers who need to find a way to make sure they meet the standards required.

@@baconbuttties I think the UK needs to make l1e-a legal here without insurance helmet etc. The current rules don't make sense, why are cargo bikes restricted to 250w If they are capped at 15mph.

If they change the law to allow more power on cargo/delivery bikes it might help.

Great video as always. I doubt anyone would disagree that beautiful towns and cities are ruined by the inevitable snake of commercial vehicles and SUVs. Unfortunately, unless it can be proven to be more efficient to have someone going up and down a hill rather than using a van then large corporations won't be interested , despite what B.S. they might state publicly about 'caring' about the local area. On that basis I'm afraid it's going to need local enforcement by way of banning such traffic before things will change...

So why not create a small railway line to all villages in this situation?

Great video, I keep thinking about a similar idea, so many high streets can be better by implementing a nearby drop off point.

The mayor needs to implement a congestion charge - that will make a bike/light electric vehicle business viable.

Interesting video. The points you raise about delivery vans are a pet peeve of mine too. Many drivers park dangerously or illegally, and speed through town to the next drop. I had not considered the point about the larger vans not being intended to be driven around town all day. I think e-bikes would need a change in the legislation to realise this idea though (a little extra power and speed). Keep up the good work and dream big ✊⚡️

I think this would suit businesses with smaller, lighter or non-fragile products but, like everything, is not going to work for everyone. There are lots of small towns and villages where traffic and delivery vehicles are a problem, so anything that reduces these must be beneficial.

I am currently in Corilejo on Fuertaventure. The main street here is particularly pedestrianised. The local business use three wheeled electric bikes to move stuff around. It works. There are people on foot, on bikes, on scooters all happily getting on with their day. There are a lot of shops bars and other buisnises which get a lot of footfall as people like to be here.

Logistics is a real thing. I think a viewing of The Lunchbox (2013) and maybe a trip to India might inspire some ideas for delivery of goods in built-up urban areas. Logistics is crazy complex for even food at lunchtime for workers.

Thank you, informative and thought provoking video. You definitely need to get out of London more. Here's a suggestion for you ref. a video. E-bike mobility and older people in rural areas. I'm 70+ years old and spend a lot of time in Buckie where there is a poor bus service. Many older people have taken to e-bike for local journeys, I saw an older lady wheel into Lidl in Buckie the other day on a three wheel e-bike with a huge basket on the back. Well done her.

Nice idea but not 100% sure about it. Look at the weather - who, in a small and expensive town are you going to employ to ride a delivery bike in all weathers? What about some EV Kei van instead? The congestion is reduced and the driver (usually on minimum wage) will be kept warm and dry.

Would the cargo bike capacity be enough? It might defeat the object if multiple cargo bike runs are required to do a big delivery.

It seems to me that a more practical system would be regular bikes going downhill and through the city, and then bikes and riders ferried up to the top in electric vans from a collection point near the bottom. The riders could be ferried back to the top a few at a time, and the bikes separately ferried back up in greater numbers in each trip. (One passenger van and one cargo van.) The savings in the number of hours wasted with riders working their way back up would easily pay for the electric van time to ferry them back up. Lots more productivity.

But even an electric scooter would be an improvement over big footprint noxious emitter vans. Or an electric tuktuk, though you'd have to keep the numbers way below eg Sri Lankan proportions.

Watching this video, it would be good country wide! The biggest problem would be the bikes, for last leg delivery bikes should have more power (500w-750w) but electrically limited to 15mph. I've seen some bikes that parents use with seats all at the front, with a long front wheel base, I think that would be a better design, you can keep an eye on everything, plus you could install a custom bag/store to keep everything in place 👍 EDIT: CUBE CARGO HYBRID 500/1000 WH

Thinking much bigger I think that if and when Crossrail 2 goes ahead in London it should have a similar setup with a branch line leading to a warehouse near the M25 (Harlow?) and trains and stations that can be used in zone 1 off peak for roll cages of stock. Perhaps an underground chiller and freezer even??

You have to wonder why nobody has implemented a scheme like this to show just how practical and cost effective a cargo bike delivery service in St Ives can be? All it would take is one person and one cargo bike to get it established.

With regards to steep hills electric vehicles don't have a problem with hills, the problem is the tiny tiny motor that 3vikes are allowed, increase the power of the motor and the bike would cruise up the hill no problem. Escooters would be great for local deliveries if they were legal, and think of the added employment on offer, but again the govt stops progress.

This is close to my heart, love the idea, but how do you relay charges fairly to everyone, would the levi for ebike be a business rate thing? The analysis of this needs to include multiple options to balance out rhe arguments , like micro electric vans or a city wide redesign of micro transport Hubs are part of ongoing ideas On the right track, but the balance has to be seen to be fair to work

I was there in the summer with a disabled relative and it’s pretty difficult to get around as a pedestrian, especially on the sea front. Nice idea, but the chap who already has a bike/van combination has already cracked it. More restrictions on non business vehicles, but leave it possible for deliveries. Just bikes won’t really work but eventually all vans will be electric anyway.

Shop owners complain about people not coming to congested, fumey town centres and then complain when councils propose the pedestrianisation of town centres. That e-van leasing price is bonkers cheap. Hope the idea takes off.

So why doesn't the government, companies & council create a small railway line? Surely all the coastal & remote villages are experiencing a similar situation? The Ebike solution you propose does make some sense, although if I am completely honest, convincing young people to ride through the rain on a daily basis without overhead coverage is a very long road.

A fixed ratio bike doesn't seem the best idea for hilly areas. It would be easier and more efficient if it had gears. Also with the weather perhaps something with a roof? I can't see how the idea would fund itself though unless it was a subssciption service or something.

Think the concept is good but the chosen bike maybe not so. With that small a load space the rider is going to spend more time going up and down the hill than delivering. Maybe something like Riese and Muller Packster might be better. Up to 375 of load space.

Quite a big jump in price though - I think there's probably a more reasonable middle ground out there (in terms of price) with good load capacity

Let's talk batteries, they literally suck big time, the batteries used in ebikes are great when new after a short time their effectiveness drops away, then you are looking for new batteries but the ones you have still give 3 quarters the range, but not enough worth keeping so you buy new batteries inly to discover the batteries you buy have not been stored properly and are garbage now you are stuck with lots if crap batteries that only give you 3 quotes range and lower out out. So the batteries suck big time in ebikes and so does the 250watts rules that everyone ignores. We need more power and better batteries to deliver that power.

Although you obviously mean well I’m sorry it’s an utterly ridiculous idea or maybe just an advert for the bike you wanting to highlight ??? I know Saint Ives extremely well. Number one that means they’ll be absolutely tons and tons of high-speed electric pushbikes flying around with heavy unbalanced loads number two. I’m sure some of these shops have quite decent size deliveries maybe The shop selling alcohol has heavy fragile bottles in very heavy boxes that probably arrive 22 boxes at a time in a van so you’re going to go up and down 22 times ?? Never mind the potential damage to the merchandise and as you said rain, I can’t believe you’ve actually created a video about this You’re trying to solve one problem yet creating a lot more. Sorry. Keep up the good EV work though I know you mean well 🙏
