In 1958 on my way back from Germany while in the army i arrived at Grand Central Station NY and was amazed how big and beautiful it was. I had been in the Frankfurt railroad Station in Germany with it's many train tracks coming in and trains. I was impressed with it. But nothing compared to the New York Central Grand Station in size and beauty at the time to small town country boy from the Midwest.

If you ever check back, you will be intersted to learn that in 2005 I met the artist who had “cleaned the ceiling” at Grand Central. She was a child athlete trained for the Moscow Circus. Tiny, less than 5’, and after years of a semi-bondage in the Circus, she defected and made her way to New York city. Here her new career began. She worked for a fellow immigrant doing painting restoration and was hired to clean the blackened ceiling of Grand Central. She worked on a scaffold on her back, moistening a small square at a time with gentle soap and then wiping it. There is one small square she left. Her first name was Marina and I have forgotten her last name, but I met her at her art gallery in Garrison, New York when she cleaned and restored a painting for me which was damaged in Katrina.

I visited Grand Central N.Y.35 years back and it is aptly named. Nobody in life is perfect and hence some delays / early arrivals are natural. I read few days back that a Train driver in Tokyo was sacked because he departed 10 Seconds earlier. Pathetic culture. 2+2 =4 but it can also be 3.999 to 4.001. I am sure most of the Trains in Japan run like this. Even the tracks on which the train Runs have some Flexibility to account for seasonal variations. Japanese should take note of it.

He didn't say busiest train 'station' he said busiest railroad 'terminal'. Shinjuku is not a Terminal, and neither is Penn Station. Its not called Grand Central Station it is called Grand Central Terminal. Grand Central Station is the subway station that is 80 or so feet below the Terminal.
@thomasvadeika21199 жыл бұрын
I think they should move all Amtrak lines from Penn Station to Grand Central since GC is a much more appealing to long-distance travelers. The western tracks at the upper level of the station could easily be connected with the Northeast Corridor and across the Hudson.
@recursor94698 жыл бұрын
Supposedly the LIRR is getting access to Grand Central Terminal, as well as Metro North getting access to Penn Station. So Maybe they're going to add an Amtrak line through Grand Central as well? I also hear they're supposed to be revamping Penn Station. So we'll see how it goes.

London's Waterloo Station is a Terminal. There are no pass through tracks. It is purely a terminal. That runs 1,600 trains per day, terminating at London Waterloo, solely using the terminal tracks, because there are no tracks that are anything other than terminal tracks. Did I mention it's a terminal? The figure I've seen for Metro-North GCT is 700 trains per day (source: The Atlantic) (GCT could well have the most tracks of any terminal though. 67 is pretty impressive. And it IS an architectural gem)
