Jesus Christ gives the gift of salvation and nothing you do can earn it, except by what He did. The works you do do is because you have received the gift of salvation when you did not deserve it in gratefulness.

​@@nathanrota4555So this passage with James you mentioned is the evidence AFTER you have received the gift of salvation. Anything beforehand apart from Jesus Christ is trying to negate Him dying for you as if you can do it on your own without Him. It also challenges the Ephesians scripture. It isn't a gift anymore, but presents that it is deserved because of what you do when no one deserves salvation.

Ephesians says it all. Gift of salvation first. Works is second afterwards to show you are saved.
