@Tes70007 ай бұрын
All the post-Diana lineups were good, and they truly had potential beyond Jean-Mary-Cindy, but I don't think Gordy actively sabotaged the group. Motown's operational model changed after Holland-Dozier-Holland left, a change that impacted most of Motown's hit groups from the 60s and even a solo Diana in the 70s. The Motown acts that would dominate in the 70s -- Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and The Commodores come to mind -- wrote and produced their own material. The Supremes didn't have the wherewithal to A&R their own material, so they fell off. By comparison, Diana also had really inconsistent chart showings in the seventies despite consistent support from Gordy. A good example of all of the above is Love Machine by The Miracles. Written by two members of the group, that song took the group from has been status all the way back to #1 in 1975-76 before they immediately fell all the way back off. The Supremes look beautiful and classy in this clip, but I almost can't believe Motown wasted a TV appearance on an oldie like Tossin' and Turnin'. Such a bad decision and wasted opportunity was the real sabotage. After 1971, Gordy didn't really have a solid grasp on where to take The Supremes, and they were pretty much back to where they had been before Where Did Our Love Go when Diana-Mary-Florence were the "no-hit Supremes" trying out different Motown producers and songs looking for a hit.

@Tes70007 ай бұрын
@@johnfulton4061 I agree, Jean Terrell was a much better singer than Diana Ross, but Diana Ross had a really unique voice, especially for a black woman. Diana could have sung hits released in the early 60s by singers like Lesley Gore, Shelly Fabares, and Petula Clark, and listeners would not have even been sure it was a black woman singing. Diana was and is a good and charismatic singer, but it must be said that her voice did a lot of the work.
@Tes70007 ай бұрын
I know Mary Wilson felt differently, but I honestly think Motown didn't go out of its way to sabotage the post-Diana Supremes. After Holland Dozier Holland, the acts that did best were those who had the ability to write and produce their own material. The Supremes didn't have the wherewithal to A&R their own material, so they fell off. After 1971 or so, I honestly think Gordy didn't really have a clear idea of what to do with the Supremes. The Supremes look and sound great in this clip, but it is pretty surprising to me that someone at Motown approved Tossin' and Turnin' for a TV appearance. What a waste. The decline in The Supremes' material after 1971 corresponded almost perfectly with their fall off on the charts.

Lynda’s mic wasn’t turned down IMO, I think that the act still continued unfortunately to have this Motown girl groups live-performances thing about having the lead’s mic way turned up and louder, incomprehensibly and frustratingly. In the second performance at the end when Mary and Lynda’s vocals come in louder, the JML lineup sounds better complementing one another’s voices and the group by then should’ve reflected 3 contemporary singers with voices all equally mic’d and heard, IMO. They looked great performing here - definitely, no other female group could still even then look so “Supreme.” Ty for posting! 😎

THESE ARE THE OFFICIAL SUPREMES. THESE ARE NO "TOURING VERSION" NOR WERE THEY A "RUSE". IT SOUNDS LIKE SOME REPLIERS ON HERE WERE NOT AROUND WHEN THIS MUSICAL HISTORY WAS MADE. WITH THE GOLDEN-VOICED JEAN TERRELL AS LEAD, THE SUPREMES HAD NINE ALBUMS, SEVERAL GOLD RECORDS, ADDITIONAL SPIN OFF LPS, AND MAJOR TV AND CLUB APPEARANCES. A VERY BIG SHOW-BIZ DEAL WAS MADE WHEN DIANA LEFT THE GROUP AND THE MAGNIFICENT JEAN TERRELL CAME IN AS THE NEW LEAD SINGER. A LIVE DOUBLE LP WAS RELEASED CAPTURING THIS EVENT. JEAN REMAINED AS LEAD FOR NEARLY FOUR YEARS. Berry Gordy eventually became uneasy with the success of the new group as he feared they would eclipse Ross by taking record sales away from her. In fact, their first single charted much, much higher than her first single! Hence, he eventually removed the best writers and musicians from the group and let them flounder. They were fantastic, but in the end this wonderful group was sabotaged.
@hollywood101usa8 ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct about what you said. Barry Gordy didn't like that the new Supremes became so successful and became direct competition the solo career of Diana Ross. Barry had a lot of money invested in making Diana a huge solo star for Motown. He intentionally stop having the new Supremes promoted. They were given substandard material to record to fulfill their contractual obligations. After that, they were dropped from the Motown label.

Jean was one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s. Gordy chose her for her talent (these are not "fake" Supremes, as some suggest here: he chose her as Ross's replacement when she left) but then he didn't seem to know just what to do with her as time went on. It was detrimental to the group when Cindy Birdsong left to have a baby and Linda Laurence (whose mic is not working right here--she has a big voice) replaced her. Laurence was very talented but it was too much to ask the fans to accept yet another change. And there were more to come. Terrell and Laurence would leave soon--but then Birdsong would return. And Scherrie Payne, with her huge dynamic voice, would come in. That was a brilliant trio (Wilson-Payne-Birdsong), but then Mary's useless and abusive husband kicked Birdsong out of the group. Birdsong was replaced by Susaye Greene, who should have been developed as a solo artist instead. That was a shame: there was great potential in the Wilson-Payne-Birdsong lineup and it echoed the former Supremes.

Random to have Mary sing a lead part and not have Lynda do a bit, too. 🤔 And...so, Jean was the one that did the slow version of "My World is Empty Without You" before Scherrie? 🤔 Her vocals are terrific. The only one working their outfit, though, is Mary. Lynda's bust and necklace are distracting. Too many layers and sleeves too long. Jean should've taken off the poncho to perform. The choreography is Supreme, though. As for the interview: Jean looks annoyed. It's not the first time there was a disturbance during an interview during a talk show interview. A live performance of "Tossin' and Turnin'". My heart melts. 😮 Mary rocked out. If only Lynda's mic were louder to mesh the harmony better, though.
