Such a great author Arthur C. Clark was. Just loved this story. Great narrator too.

Anything Ac wrote enthralled me. The first serious book I read was childhoods end. My late father was a sci fi book nut. Asimov, Herbert etc were the books of my youth. Ps. Gentry Lee RUINED rama..

To say 2001 took some creative liberties with the source material would be the understatement of a lifetime. LOL Still a really good story, and I kinda wish he'd followed up on it with further stories, showing what sort of beings had left the sentinel.. and whether or not they've come in to guide us or to exterminate us.

Awesome short story. Mental note: This has nothing to do with the 1970s movie The Sentinal about a crazy happenings in an apartment building with an old, blind priest on the top floor. :)

While it is said to inspire 2001, the ending tone is closer to inspiring Clarke's "First Born," where the ancient aliens are intending extermination of any species that might pose a threat to them in the future. Clarke even mentioned that the First Born are an alternate version of the 2001 aliens, although whether they still survived in their original form or in some transformed/transmuted echo as machines, or replaced by their machines is uncertain. Nice recital.
