My personal ranking of "The Crow" franchise; - The Crow (1994) ... (A Big Quality Gap) ... - The Crow: Stairway To Heaven ... (A Gigantic Chasm Of Quality Larger Than The Mariana Trench Given How None of the Remaining Films Are Good) ... - The Crow: Salvation - The Crow: Wicked Prayer - The Crow (2024) - The Crow: City of Angels

@joshuamarks4425 it seems to be going more into gnarly gore and hipster-goth style, so who knows! All I have to go on so far is the ludicrous production history and development hell it's been through (and the extremely corny trailers that appear to show it's doing the exact same plot every single adaptation has used so far once again)

The shame of the Crow II is that it had the potential to be a pretty decent (maybe even good) film. GoodBadFlicks did a video on it many years ago, talking about how the studio fucked everything up as usual. It's worth checking out.

I really liked City of Angles and Salvation. Sure they will never beat the original, but I liked both of those movies because I really loved the idea that every new Crow we get has a person with a different tragedy for their backstory. One of the unique aspects of both those movies was how both Ash and Alex got their crow markings. His son Danny loved to paint, so to honor him, Sara used his paints to give Ash his Crow marks and for Alex, his marks came from a scarred disfigurement from the electric chair and he peeled bits of his skin off. We weren't getting close to the first Crow movie, but I really appreciated that each writer/ director gave the other movies its own charm to make it unique.

As butchered as the final cut of City of Angels was, I still love the movie. They way they carry on about how bad it is in this video sounds like they're just pandering to people that disliked it. It feels like a caricature of a review, to me.

I'll always believe that if we were to ever see Tim Pope's original cut for The Crow: City of Angels, it would make most do a complete 180 in regards to how they feel about the movie. The amount of deleted scenes listed on IMDB would make anyone reconsider; the biggest omission, arguably, being the ending, which was beautifully tragic. It pisses me off that we may never see that version because they did release it on Pay Per View, but it's been a piece of lost media ever since. I saw it as a kid, it was my first movie memory as a kid (peering over a couch and watching it, unbeknownst to my ma), hence why I have such a passion for the film; I'll never forget my disappointment with the "director's cut" DVD which is not at all what aired on PPV and not at all Tim Pope's cut. This remake gave me hope that we may see Tim's true version of CoA, but I don't think enough people give a toss (which I can't blame).

With a concept as broad as: person and the love of their lives die by extreme violence, only to return as a vengeful inmortal vigilante, there shouldn't be so many adaptations where the set up and execution is exactly the same. That comic is so rad (and occasionally balls to the wall tasteless in a grindhouse exploitation kind of way). @@inframeout Which is unfortunate, as the comics have demonstrate how much and how far you can with such an embarrassing treasure of endless potential. Even down to the makeup and costumes each Crow wear that showcase their individuality and autonomy. For example, one Crow was a state trooper....who's just dressed as a state trooper while avenging his partner. But seriously, Skinning the Wolves and Curare are few many best examples of taking the Crow anywhere. The last two Crow miniseries was about a found family of circus people; and an interesting take on the slasher genre.

I actually think the baseline Crow concept could work as like an anthology series. Radom people resurrected by a mythical Crow blaw blaw blaw. There's a concept there that could work. Men and women of various origins becoming the Crow. Various undeserved, neglected etc groups of people getting vengeance. There's something there that could work.
@SeasideDetective2
@SeasideDetective2 3 ай бұрын
That's the premise the comics ended up following, anyway. I'd just worry that, given the nature of the series, it would go "DEI," with only various minorities being cast in the lead role. Innocent blonde girl? White working-class guy? Lonely rich WASP? Too bad - you all just die. That, and the most noteworthy visual gimmick - the "undead" makeup - would (and in fact did) become tiresome. Are we to believe every young murder victim has the same Carnival mask? Given that Death has many faces across various world cultures, we could have a very nice and diverse Halloween parade. (I'd love to see, say, a British Indian as the Hindu god of death, for example.) You could even turn the whole thing into a true anthology by having a different animal replace the crow every time.

I will try to say only positive things about these movies: The Crow (Brandon Lee) is one of my top 5 of all time... saw it in cinemas and still love it to this day. I think you're spot on with City of Angels, there was a better film there and some of the shifts in tone (his mania) I think would have made more sense if not for HW. The nature of the story (someone is wronged/murdered and is supernaturally resurrected to enact revenge, via a "mystical" crow, on his murderers) lends itself to a great one and done film, which Proyas pulled off brilliantly despite the tragic death of Brandon Lee hanging over the legacy of the original. The first film has fantastically pulp-y, in the best possible way, performances. Jon Polilto croaking "F*ck me!' in disbelief as Draven's wound heals, "Pussies drink last, man." "I'm not Stank. Stank's over dere. Stank's dead!" "Mother is the name for God on the lips of all children." and "It can't rain all the time." Hollywood can't recognize a classic and let it be. I'm glad I stopped at the first film and just rewatch it. I salute your sacrificing brain cells to watch everything else.

@@inframeout Yes! As an anthology, the premise would work great. The Old West, feudal Japan, you name it and the Crow can show up, any place, any era, any type of person, to exact some vengeance. I feel exactly the same, The Crow should have ended with the death of Brandon Lee and then the film would have always been a tribute to his memory and his last performance but because he died during filming and the film made money and has gained a cult following over the years all the film companies see are money signs and think they can just keep putting out cheap imitations of the original thinking it will have the same success. At this point more than 30 years down the line you would think they would have learnt their lesson that they can't beat the original movie especially with the lead actor from that original film gone forever and just leave the story of The Crow to rest in peace.

I'll never forget when a scathing review of Wicked Prayer that I read in my mom's Dark Realms Issue 20 magazine neatly summarized the series' quality decline as thus: "The 1994 film *The Crow* was a terrific movie, hailed by critics and beloved by audiences worldwide. The sequel, *The Crow: City of Angels* was a fairly forgettable film, and though it was a disappointment to most fans of the first movie, it did offer some redeeming elements. The third installment, *The Crow: Salvation* was released direct-to-video and was an abysmal travesty...Believe it or not, *The Crow: Wicked Prayer* is actually worse than the last one...this movie makes a mockery of James O'Barr's dark tale of a gothic avenging angel." The issue with that is one of marketing rather than the quality of the film. The studio did put more money into post-production and shifted the release from a limited run/straight to VHS in certain territories to a full global theatrical rollout in the wake of Lee's death. All of which undoubtedly played a word of mouth role and sped up the cultural catalytic reaction to the film. That being said - I still think it would have been discovered and championed by an adoring demographic.

Well, it’s hard to come close to the original, I think the crow salvation is a pretty good… Maybe because it’s the first crow movie I ever saw, but I appreciate it mixing things up with instead of criminals, It’s corrupt cops. Plus the film has a pretty stacked cast.

I've only seen the original. I watched it again a few years ago with the commentary track. It could have been so much worse if the filmmakers had had their way. As it was, I never saw how people loved it so much. I felt that it fell so far short of the comic. I recommend the comic to anyone into the genre. I have never recommended the film.

The Crow sequels are so awful, I almost forget how much I enjoyed the Stairway To Heaven series. As a fan of Mark Dacascos, he definitely added his own flavor to the IP, especially in terms of fight scenes. The show did take an emotional toll on him, because of the franchise’s bleak tone, and the on-set death of a crew member. Everything since then has given him a new appreciation for life, and you can see it in every movie and TV show he does, as well as his daily clips on social media. I have a feeling that if Brandon Lee were alive today, regardless of how he’d have felt about the TV show, he’d have jumped at the chance just to spend the day with Mark Dacascos. 🙏🏽

I always liked City of Angels, although it doesn't really stick the landing unfortunately. Even with Sarah coming back, it feels closer to feeling like one of the comic book spinoffs that does its own thing. Great cast too, and I liked the soundtrack even if it isn't as iconic as the one for the first movie.

I can't help but admire the series, though, for casting Mark Dascascos, a B-movie actor who always seemed to choose interesting (if cheesy) roles (Jimmy Lee in DOUBLE DRAGON, that leopard-man in THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU). He looked so much like Brandon Lee (even, like Lee, being part-Caucasian and part-Asian, which also made him ideal for DOUBLE DRAGON) that it's almost possible to believe the show and the original movie are part of the same universe.

Apparently I'm the only one who likes and enjoyed City of Angels and Salvation. I'm not saying they are great movies by any means, but I personally like and enjoyed them. I think they gave us some interesting moments, takes, and perspectives on The Crow. The first one is still the best. I have nothing good to say about Wicked Prayer, or Stairway to Heaven. Well, I would have something to say for Stairway to Heaven but the no killing rule was stupid as hell. It felt like they were trying to turn The Crow into the next Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I don't think it's quite accurate to say that the TV series is another adaptation of the comic, since the first episode is a straight up remake of the movie, including everything the movie changed from the source. I wouldn't be surprised if the writers never read the book.

I did however, enjoy your breakdown of them all. The metaphors and quips are more entertaining than all but the original combined.

16:36 That was on the PS1? I watched the AVGN play the Dreamcast version. 20:42 "Think of it as... therapy." - Jack Nicholson's Joker 25:16 Great, now ya got me thinking of Dexter going full Crow to avenge his Lab on Dee-Dee and Mandark. 30:24 "No. Stop. Come back. You have so much to live for." 33:53 At least it tried to connect the Crow to Native American folklore. My CROW experience can sum up with 3 letters: M, T, V. Back in 2009, I watched the 1st movie, for the 1st time, on that channel on Valentine's Day. Me and 3 of my college roommates were sick, so we went "F it, let's watch this" and it blew my mind. A near perfect time-capsule of mid-90's Goth and a callback to when MTV really felt innovative and daring. I also saw part of the sequels on that channel. City of Angels was OK, the next to were tonally-inconsistent messes that cheaped out on sets and costumes which were NOBODY's best work, but the new one looks like crap. Something someone else said about Bill Skarsgard's Eric captured my feelings on the subject: "Brandon Lee's version looked like he played guitar in Nine Inch Nails, the new guy looks like he releases dubstep rap on Soundcloud".

I honestly like the repeated premise, I feel like the MC dying, being resurrected, and taking vengeance is what the series is about. It's a premise with a ton of options for variability and theming, the problem is not the premise but the execution. To me it's like getting frustrated that a new The Ring is about a cursed tape that kills people.
