What a wonderful way to spend my Serbian Christmas! I am of Serbian descent, born in South Chicago. This documentary brought back so many happy memories. I remember the Popovich Brothers' music filling our home -- the dancing, the food, the laughter and love. I will always be proud of my Serbian heritage. Thank you so much for posting this video. Zivio! "Marko was an ironworker all his life. But when he was playing his prima (balalaika) you know, he was a whole different person than at any other time, at any other moment that you could know him. He was a person who was inside YOU when he did that, making YOU happy, sort of from the inside out. Not many people get inside you. Very few get past the door for most people."

Nothing makes me more proud to be Serbian than the countless times the world powers have tried to eradicate us throughout history. I remember my father always telling me stories when i was a kid: of famous Serbian warriors and heroes. People like Karadjordje, Draza, Milos Obilic, Emperor Dušan the mighty, and more. He would tell me of the lengths that Serbians would go through in order to preserve our precious culture. For example how we fled to the mountains while under Ottoman occupation so that we can preserve our orthodox faith. How when the ottomans storm our houses on Christmas to steal our food, we would make most of our food from pork so that they couldn’t take it since they were Muslims. We are a proud nation of warriors. 50% of the Serbian male population perished during world war 1. When the rest of the Allies were too worn out to keep fighting, the Serbs kept going and fought until they returned to their homeland. For those of you who are Serbian, even if you don’t speak or understand it. Know that you have a special blood in you, a blood that is warmer than everyone else’s. A culture that is unlike any other of this planet, that through the blood and sacrifice of our people has been preserved to this very day.

I was born and raised in Serbia, and that's where I will left my bones! I had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, and meet lots of different people with different cultural backgrounds, but at the end, there's no country like Serbia, and my fellow Serbs. Yes, we have lots of issues, mostly economical, so it's my duty to learn as much as I can to make this country progress and reach it's fool potential. Greetings to all Serbs from all over the World.

The proper title of this documentary is "The Popovich Brothers of South Chicago". It was not about the community but focused on the brothers influence and careers in the South Chicago communtiy. I wish the title and description would be corrected to a more accurate descritption.

For everyone that wants to know most of the Serbs are gone from Chicago. All the young ones moved on to Indiana are other suburbs. There are only older folks left. There are some young people left but most of them are gone after the Steel Factories closed down. Now there is a large Croatian population in Chicago. That mostly came after the war.
@donnabruner51153 жыл бұрын
True story. I migrated to Indiana over 20 years ago. We have 2 churches in Merrillville, and I believe there is one out east and not sure if there is still one in Gary. Yes, Indiana is heavily populated with Serbs 😊
@marthateshich8806 Жыл бұрын
This coment is not really true. Lots of Serbs left in Chicago. The Chicago area which included Northwest Indiana is home to thousands of Serbians. Many churches still in Chicago, Joliet, Northwest Indiana and two monasteries in the suburbs.

Croatians? Where do you see them in Chicagoland area? Could you please tell me what areas?? All the Croatians are older folks too and the younger ones assimilated. I went to a tamburitza concert with Croatian bands this past Saturday at the Slovenian Cultural Center and it was a lot of elderly Croats there. Very small community. There was a large presence of Croatians from the 1920s to about the 70s and 80s. But I may be wrong, some could've came to Chicago in the 90s from the war but most of them moved to NYC. There is a large Bosnian presence in Chicagoland up in the northern suburbs.
