What struck me as fascinating about that synagogue outline is its similarity to the liturgy we use today in the Divine Service. We begin with the Introit, which is a singing of a Psalm. Instead of just an Old Testament reading, of course, we added an Epistle and Gospel reading. Instead of the confession of the Shema, we confess the Apostles' or Nicene Creed. Then like in the synagogue, there is a sermon. We have the Prayer of the Church. Then we end the Divine Service with the benediction from Numbers 6:24-26. If there was ever an argument for liturgical worship that's would be it.

Yes, excellent and accurate observations. And it's really no surprise. The earliest Christians were almost all Jewish. As they began to worship apart from the synagogue, they took the basic synagogue liturgy and added Christian elements to it. This become the foundation upon which the historic liturgy of the church was based.

What a wonderful overview of this passage. Such a clear foreshadowing of the rejection he will continue to experience throughout his ministry all the way to the cross. Coming on the heals of his baptism and temptation, we have Jesus' entire story laid out in about a chapter. Thank you for leading us through this passage and its Old Testament connections!

Brother- a couple weeks behind, I'm doing "catch-up" in the office today. Thanks, as always. It is so wonderful to get the perspective of, not only the size of Jesus' hometown, but that within that context, the upheaval at His words consumed all his neighbors. God's peace to you.

Hopefully you don't mind if I add that Jesus says, "no doubt you will say, physician heal theyself" immediately after they witness that, "is not this Joseph's son?". The statement might seem neutral but we know that Jesus is the adopted son of Joseph (no wedding including consummation had occured prior to Mary being "found to be with child"). We believe that Jesus is literally "born of a virgin" since Joseph did not "know" Mary until after Jesus is born (Mat 1:25). Jesus then applies your line of logic and points out the inheritance of the "deeds of the fathers" include the prophets Elijah and Elisha feeding the Gentile widow and healing the Gentile man rather than any Israelite.
