Medieval history lesson here! The headless man (with the face on the chest) was a "Blemmy" plural, "Blemmyes". These were a mythical race of people, dating back to at least Greek myth (akephaloi), who were often depicted on maps to show foreign/other/unknown areas. It's very much a way to show that this is not an area where "right thinking" men lived - strangeness, otherness, even that these people were supposedly stupid and inferior. On to Cats - cats in medieval times were both revered and reviled. They were valued as mousers and treasured as pets, but feared because of the snake like nature of their eyes (snakes were symbols of evil and deception from the story of Adam and Eve) and also the very nature of cats. Their sensitive reactions to spirits and seeming otherworld knowledge, smug expressions etc un-nerved other people enough to associate them as servants of the devil... leading to the 'witches familiar' trope that women have had to deal with since the dark ages. Animals were often anthropomorphised in medieval art either to show particular animal traits or simply monks having a laugh at the expense of their abbots (ie, dawing their abbot with a donkey's head to show him as a fool). I think the trick here would be to look at what the deck author is trying to convey with the image from the book and then see whether that trait is particularly a cat trait? The High Priestess card - yes, that is a depiction of Mary ascending into heaven, surrounded by saints. The Lovers Card - I believe that is a detail from Heironimus Bosch's Garden of Earthly delights triptych Cute blog post about cats & manuscripts: www.quirkbooks.com/post/quirky-history-cats-medieval-manuscripts-or-charming-jerks-and-devil-incarnate

I studied medieval history, art and literature in University. This deck looks amazing! I love the quirky beasts in medieval manuscripts known as “marginalia” because they were literally drawn in the margins. The head in the body was often used to describe what they thought of as “uncivilized” peoples. It also showed someone ruled by the flesh rather than the mind. I love the quirky drawings - my favourite is the guy being carried off by the devil. The expression on the guy’s face is priceless. I too would love them to explain more in the guidebook as the cards are taken from a variety of manuscripts, altarpieces and paintings.

That bit about being ruled by the flesh rather than the mind is so fascinating! I'm so glad you shared it!

This deck is absolutely brilliant and a blast to read for others and myself. Tarot symbolism is on point and it has a pithy sense of humor. Love it!

Another deck with a similar 14th century vibe and a Phenomenal guide book is Kat Black's "Golden Tarot". She discribes Where and Why she chooses the art images.

Hi Lisa, the image on the Magician card has been taken from a 17th century painting depicting the German proverb "Nimm dich selbst bei der Nase" which translates as "Take yourself by the nose". It shows the bird of self-knowledge. The alphabet on the pentacles is, I believe, Theban. Thank you for showing us this deck, most of the cards don't work for me, unfortunately.

@@Lisa_Papez Maybe it can mean that what you think then happens to you. That your thinking comes true. (So be careful) In the end magic is linguistic or mental in nature. You should take your life in hand, but everything begins with ideas?

It's in a tin box! That's so nice. I adore tins for decks, it's such an underused packaging. I love that you can carry them around without having to worry of them getting bent or wet.

Great video, Lisa. I have this deck and love the art. It is so interesting. I do like reading about why and how a deck comes about. I am not a fan of any kind of gilding. It's pretty, but not practicle. I prefer edging in a color that compliments the deck. 🙏 AnnaO

I too like a deck that tells its creation story. There are so many decks being produced now that more expensive decks/indi decks need to go that extra mile. The attraction of an indi deck for me is the connection with the artist. The creation story is what elevates a deck above the average. Thank you for your content as always.

Maybe with the magician the bird is preparing to take flight? Doing a bit of internal reflection beforehand? Idk that’s a bit of a stretch lol

While I can appreciate other people's art, this deck (thank goodness) doesn't call to me. I do really love that type of edging.....matt-ish with sparkle, it seems to be more hearty than the "fancy" shiny gilding. Another great video!👏

I love the deck I had to have it . The gilded edge is so pretty it has changed my idea of what gilded edges can look like. I agree the book leaves a bit to be desired. As pretty as it is it's nothing that wouldn't be in any other deck. It could apply to any rws. I guess that makes it a better resource for very new readers.

The Temperance card features a swan, and in my handy dandy Dictionary of Symbols, is states that the swan the spotless bird whose whiteness, strength and grace have made it a living manifestation of LIGHT itself. There are, nevertheless, two whitenesses and two lights, the solar, male light of day and the lunar female light of night. The meaning of its symbology depends upon which of these two the swan embodies. If it remains undivided and, as is sometimes the case, tries to bear the synthesis of both, the swan becomes hermaphroditic and even more highly charged mystery and holiness. I bought this deck because of this video. Today I plan on dissecting the cards from this deck, because the guidebook was lacking a lot of the details I was hoping to read about.

The weird face on stomach/back figures totally put me off sadly - and I agree with you over the Ace of swords, that would irritate me too much! However I do admire it for being super quirky and weird ;-) ;-)

I initially thought maybe Dani-Dustin convinced you to get this deck because it seems like their jam! The art is wonderfully rendered. And also very much a pass for me because of cards like the 7 of coins and Judgment. I cannot 🙈😅

Some of the illustrations are beautiful, but I don't think I'm comfortable with the higglety-pigglety mismatched source material.

It was so interesting seeing the medieval art. The quirky pics made me giggle. I also prefer knowing the background of the making of a deck. I would definitely want to get it for the art, but the Christian stuff is a bit triggering to me.

Well..you'd HAVE to be a magician to pull this off...I tried...mind you it was a banty hen but all the same it.didn't work. That's obviously why he's the magician.... Okay. For real, being able to transform yourself into the situation with that much calm and confidenc to be in control of emotions and totally unphased I would say takes all your tools....
