If you don't fall in love with at least one drum from this list, then I think you might need to reevaluate your tonal and sonic preferences. 😂

Get the tones you've only heard in KZbin videos. Find the sounds you've dreamt about for years. They're not difficult to get. You just need the right snare drum! In this video, I explore seven different metal snares that have all served me well during my decades of drumming experience. From vintage to modern, short to tall, aluminum to brass, and everything in between, you'll leave this video with a lot more knowledge about metal snare drums that will prepare you for your next purchase. And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll do my best to answer you here in the comments!
I am a snare drum FREAK. I've owned everything from Ludwig, Leedy, Tama, DW Drums, Yamaha, custom drum companies, and more. But the seven drums we're going to look at today are just plain special. There are a few drums form Ludwig, and it's that brand that continues to excite my ears. There are other vintage drums on this list from another Chicago drum manufacturer, but you'll find out about that brand (one that DW Drums now actually owns) later in this video. And the last drum mentioned in this video comes out of Seattle - the home of grunge. And that guy who made that snare is the legend behind really making that Seattle drum sound POP!
I'm hoping to cover some more wood snare drums in another video. What is your favorite wood snare? Something like the Rogers Dynasonic (the wood version) is super rare and sound fantastic, but it's more common drums like the 3-ply Ludwig and Slingerland snares of the past that tend to pump me up because they're more common and a heck of a lot more economical. Other Rogers Drums products, like the wood Powertone snare might be a better option for you if you need that vintage Ohio-style tone. And if you need modern, maybe you need to check out Tama Drums, Pearl Drums, or even Yamaha. All the big Japanese manufacturers make incredible modern sounding drums. Or, opt for something from Europe! Sonor Drums still produces some of the most forward-thinking product designs int he drum world. The SQ2 snares are just insane. And if I can get my hands on one, you know I'm going to make a video with it!
To compliment the great snares in the video here, I've got my Ludwig Classic Maple drum set in Heritage Green lacquer. It's got a 20x14" kick drum, 12x8" tom, plus 14x14" and 16x16" floor toms. I use DW 6000 Ultralight cymbal stands plus a few other DW and Pearl odds n' ends. And for cymbals, I've got Turkish Cymbals here - 15" Millennium Hi Hats, 20" Meta Crash, 22" Millennium Ride, a Clap3 Stack, and a 24" Paper Thin Dark Dry Ride Prototype.
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
Dr. Alien Smith Alien8 (Kick Out)
Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I love beef jerky.
Oh, and that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycable...
