These people were doing everything they could, sacrificing everything they could, in the hopes of taking as much punishment on themselves for the evils of mankind, in the hopes of ending the horrible absurd suffering of that time that was unexplainable. I don't really see any "anti-catholic" bigotry in there. Maybe it was the director's goal but not sure if I see that. Also the whole "seventh seal" theme kind of goes against that, with the quote from the bible on the seventh seal.

Andrew SCRUGGS The movie isn’t necessarily anti catholic/anti Christian, but one of the main themes is the silence or absence of god. The plague is seen as a product of judgement day, in which the seventh seal has been broken, and heaven is silent, hence the reason there is no answer to the people’s prayers. The film doesn’t outright deny the existence of god throughout, although Block’s scene at the confessional is more of a single viewpoint from a single character. This scene just shows the futile attempt these people have at communicating with God, and how they believe that they will be saved, yet their answers fall on deaf ears, an example of the Silence of God theme

E S No, it... It one hundred percent happened. Matter of fact, it still happens in certain parts of Europe, as far as I know. If you find it upsetting and unsettling, good - It's supposed to be. It's a depiction of utter helplessness and desperation, people at their wits end with terror doing whatever they can think of to try and appease a creator who doesn't seem to care about their suffering. It's a wonderful scene from a wonderful film, no matter how much it may offend your sensibilities.
