Great to learn more about this area and these boats. I traveled the inland waterway in 1974. No big tourist boats then, fortunately. An amazing part of India, and the world, for that matter.

Wonder how didn't you reach Calicut, once a hub of ship building like Dhows, Sanbuks etc. Ship building units are still in operation in Beypore in Calicut. Remnants of Taek wood, which is a native of Malabar coast, was found from Sumeria shows the ancient craftmanship of these people.

I have seen the same concepts sewing (lashing together of timbers from the Pandana tree to make their sail boats used for fishing ) in the Republic of the Kiribati Islands in Central Pacific (Micronesia)

I am very disapointed that no mention was made in this documentary about the canoes of Oceania, which were constructed using lahings. A prime example are the canoes of Kiribati which not only are planked and lashed but with a hull nearly similar to those boats in Kerala. Further more, plank built and lashed were the canoes of Samoa, Salomon Islands and a few others. It needs to be mention as well that all the components making the ancient large Polynesian double hull voyaging canoes which crossed the vastness of the Pacific were all lashed together.

@@momentousmanav ignore these fools. India is a silent country. Almost a blank canvas. That's why fools always try to sh!£ all over it like this. Indians don't care about own history. So others take the opportunity to create their own narrative and impose it. If indians don't try to ' claim ' whatever that is yours, you will be left with no real history.
