Shein is a $100 billion company originally headquartered in China, now Singapore. By some metrics, it is the biggest fashion retailer in the world, and it has been accused of a lot of things, from having dangerous materials in many of its products, from pfas to lead, to huge tax evasion in the UK and Brazil and tax evasion in the US. It's also been accused from everyone of massive copyright theft. But the real story about Shein and its clothes is this: Shein's clothes are made by slaves.

If you can't afford the high price tag of clothes made by reputable companies, then consider buying second hand. On line places like Thread Up, etc. are great. Not only can you avoid supporting manufacturers like Shein, but it also helps to reduce waste.

I had to conduct risk management on Shein for my old employer, basically to decide whether or not they were a reputable business partner. What % of your electric car battery is mined by slaves in the congo? Or what % of your clothing is made by near slaves in Bangladesh. What % of your coffee is picked by slaves or your sugar? It's not as clean cut as you think.

Sourcing with a guaranteed chain of custody is harder than you think and is almost impossible as you scale up. Even if you trust your source, material may be mixed in at different stages from gray markets. 98% ethical sourcing, if correct, is pretty good. It's naive to believe otherwise. The world as a whole isn't as ethical as some would like to think.

Except that’s not how market forces work as most buying cheap products do so based on price not a moral evaluation. Using that rhetoric while true gives leeway to the producers. If you allow them an inch they will take a mile, the only way to end this sort of practice is to either make it economically unviable or to enforce top down legislation. Despite the increasing supporting for ending slavery in the 18th and 19th century it only actually became illegal once it stopped being economically unviable, machines simply became more efficient than human labour. Individuals can make moral choices, but large scale populations you have to manage with policy you can’t just wait for individuals to change. Tomorrow if suddenly lab grown meat became cheaper than farm fed animals the world would move away from slaughtering animals and the problems it causes in an instant. Comparatively arguing for vegetarianism converts some individuals based on reasoned arguments and morality but it will take forever and possibly never stop the majority eating meat while it’s so economically incentivised.
@williamwinstrop3918
@williamwinstrop3918 8 ай бұрын
@@acksawblack tldr: you are a rhetorical fool Most buying any product will do so based on price, followed by quality and accessibility. Slavery is not Illegal. Laws are not enacted on a global basis. In almost 50% of the world’s countries slavery is not criminalized. In other words almost half the planet would disagree and prove to you that machines do not make it cheaper, more efficient, or more easily accessible to the customer or producer. “Large scale populations” does not exclusively include the producer. A population that is larger in scale then producers and also includes producers is consumers. Do you feel equal if not larger policy should be enacted on the “large scale population” know as EVERY HUMAN THAT HAS OR EVER WILL EXSIST? To state lab grown meat would cause a “move away” is such a broad and unmeasurable statement it can’t be wrong, just as much as it cant be correct, since a movement in the market by a fraction of a cent in either direction proves your right or wrong. If your belief on lab grown meat is how you think the entire world works, while trying to discuss rhetoric and market forces you are not equipped in anyway to discuss market forces. You don’t know how it works…You have a few pieces of disconnected information and have made up a reality that puts those puzzle pieces together. You have the belief slavery is Illegal and expensive and have based an entirely rhetorical argument off of it. You don’t know that these places have slavery and the majority of the people living there want slavery. You would like a “large scale population” that is already getting what they want to decide to enact policies they don’t want. What a fool you are.

Superb video as always, Georg. Always happy to see informative content from you 👍 Sucks that this kind of "fast fashion" garbage is so popular these days. It's apparently so huge, yet it's the first time I'm even hearing of this company! (I'm not into buying rubbish clothes every other day, let's put it that way)

The US banning cotton imports because it was produced by slave labour is a really interesting point to have gotten to.

They're buying from other countries now; like Benin: "Cotton There are reports that children ages 6-17 are forced to produce cotton in Benin. Cotton is grown primarily in the north, such as in Banikoara, and according to NGOs and international organizations, many of the children are trafficked or migrate to this area from other parts of the country, or from Burkina Faso or Togo. Some children are lured by traffickers with false promises about working conditions or terms. Some children work on year-long contracts and are not allowed to leave until the end of the year. They are paid only at the end of the contract, once the cotton is sold, but most children report that they do not receive their full payment, and some are not paid at all. Children usually live with their employer, and do not receive sufficient food." Source: List of Goods Produced by Child Labor or Forced Labor by Bureau of International Labor Affairs

you see, by focusing on the vocal attention seekers, we manage to ignore all the real victims of violence, predatory behavior and slavery all over the world while feeling good about ourselves. Its willful ignorance.

here’s how to not buy fast fashion: 1. save some money and buy a sewing machine. 2. buy the highest quality items you can afford, even if that means buying less and buying less often. 3. assume everything you buy will last 5 or more years of regular wear. 4. by the time something gets damaged, you’ll have watched enough free youtube videos on how to sew and practiced that you’ll be able to fix it. 5. even if you don’t care about slavery, in that time frame you will have worn better clothes for less money.

Thank you, Georg! There is something about a snide and calm delivery that makes it harder to dismiss than preachiness. If you’re rich, don’t buy what’s made by slaves, if you’re poor, buy used where possible. It is almost never necessary to buy fast fashion. Hopefully there will be a time when building things to last and learning how to maintain them becomes a priority. The incentives aren’t there right now but that doesn’t have to be the case until breaking point, right?

Well, I can't do anything, as I don't buy from them or know anyone who does. I'm used to buying clothes for at least 10X what Shein sells clothing for (and waiting months for it to arrive), and I still feel like I'm getting cheap knock-offs. I guess that makes Shein knock-offs of knock-offs. I have my doubts about how people can support themselves making $50 skirts.

The uncaring pursuit of order and profit could be called evil, but falls short i think, because genuine evil seeks the suffering and extinction of others, where China is trying to keep itself coherent with the Guangxi Massacres not exactly being ancient history at all. Sure, they're using an iron fist, but it's a fist that wouldn't be any use against massive unrest or famine.

If I need clothes, I can go to a thrift store and pick something up that very day. If I need anything else, chances are I can find it used with fast shipping on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. (My time is valuable, too. I'm not waiting a month for a dogshit quality hoodie made with slave labor.) Not buying Shein is the easiest thing I've ever done.
