Just started following the history of the Shangri-las. It's a sad story of four teenagers taken advantage of by slimy producers and managers. There is absolutely no reason this song wasn't a number one hit. Their story is strikingly similar to the story of Badfinger. Great groups with sorry managers.

Two sets of twins! From the same high school (Andrew Jackson) on Staten Island. They lived two streets away from each other ! when they would walk home from school they would pass a Chinese restaurant, called the Shangri-La Palace. They said the smell of the delicious food made them work hard harder, because their ultimate goal in life was to be able to go in the Shangri-La Palace, and sit down and have anything they wanted! A guy named shadow Morton was there producer. He said that he was out of gas and stuck by the bay front, hoping someone would stop as the night grew on. He took his suit off, and was resigned to go to sleep in his car. When he woke up, he had this sound in his ear of seagulls and waves crashing on the sand, and he knew he had to write a song! He went to school and found the girls in the lunch room on their study hall break and pitched the idea to them. Mary replied we have eight dollars to our fucking names! If you can take that, and make history by all means shadow , lead the way! He went to the library and collected some soundtracks from a video from the national geographic program. He recorded seagulls and waves crashing. He had everything he needed except a motorcycle. They had a date set for the recording. They found a guy driving a Harley Davidson in Brooklyn, and he agreed to drive over to the city and sneak the motorcycle into the studio! He said he needed three dollars to fill up his tank and the address of the place which happened to be the Roosevelt Hotel because the record company had a recording studio there. When he got there, security refused to let him bring this big motorcycle into the hotel lobby. They only have a two track recorder! They definitely needed a motorcycle for the leader of the pack. They had everything else they needed for walking in the sand and two other records that flopped time was running out because they were only given 30 minutes with a 30 minute extension if necessary to cut all four of the songs. Shadow went outside to have a cigarette and think there was a pawnshop next-door and he made a deal to rent a lawnmower for 15 minutes for two dollars. He brought the lawnmower in and that’s what they used for a mighty motorcycle engine! He was a pretty good engineer for someone who never had any experience! By the end of the night they had mixed and recorded the version that you hear of leader of the pack, and what started out to be called walking in the sand, but I believe they changed the title. Mary was the last one to pass away, and she just died a few weeks ago after the group split up Mary was a successful, corporate office furniture designer. When the girls got to be of age, they got legal right to have all of their contracts revealed to them. All four of the girls were paid less than 4% total! Monies that were supposed to be held in escrow for when they turned 21 never existed. You can find a story on 2020 in reference to a guy name Dick, Fox, and the way he and several other long nosed men, robbed these teenage girls !
