The Shangri-Las were fashion leaders back in 1964. They were the 1st girl group to wear tight pants & boots on stage. Their brilliance came from being so progressive sounding in the 60’s. 👍🏿👍🏿

Oh my, those gals were really young when they passed. Will prompt me to read about them. I also always thought there were 4 in the group but many pics show just 3 so now I’ll be curious to read their bios. I bought all their 45 hits as a young teenager.

@@MrEdkern yea, she was real nice, she was the main one I talked to. She was a fan of my fave singer, Mary Wells. She liked working with Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich. She didn't care too much for the hotels/motels, they had to stay in on the road, but she enjoyed our Fla. weather. Just seemed like a regular girl in mu school. Marge & Mary Ann were real nice too.Betty was not there,

Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, whose hits included “Leader of the Pack,” died on January 19, 2024.. She was 75. The Shangri-Las, formed in the New York City borough of Queens, were made up of two pairs of sisters: Weiss and her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Weiss, along with twins Marguerite “Marge” Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser. They met in school and as teenagers began performing at school dances and teen hops.

Betty Weiss was the original Lead singer, and sang lead on Maybe" (the LP version), "Twist and Shout", "Wishing Well" and "Shout" etc... but Mary sang lead on "Leader of the Pack", and from then on was the lead singer of the group.

A friend of mine grew up with them in Cambria Heights, and knew them back when they did shows, he saw them and is a HUGE fan. !!! He got every Shagri-las item signed and today has a HUGE collection. Even went to the Cousin Bruce show in the 80s, which was their very last performance.

I fell in love with Mary Ann in 63, I was 10 and she was 15...she use to come over to Queens where I lived during summer vacation. my babysitter and Mary Ann would make me mad talking to their boyfriends on the phone and ignoring me. Boy do I miss those days.

Music changed due to the 'British Invasion" (Beatles). That was the beginning of the end of 'most' of the best bands and solo singers gradually started to vanish, because of Beatlemania, who I don't believe ever came even close to the talent we had back then. Wish they had never come to America. They singlehandedly destroyed the best music we ever had in our lifetime, never to have again.

Ronettes only had a 1 hit wonder only main reson they are famous was because of phil spector gave them a house hold name plus the head singer was married to him
