I remember hearing Vinnie do stuff like this in Jing Chi and thinking it sounded like he was shifting gears in a car from the drum set. I was blown away by this, and I kept hearing it from the drum greats like Dave Weckl, Will Kennedy, Gary Novak, and many others. I hope you enjoy this drum lesson, and I hope it inspires you to try shifting the gears of your favorite patterns.
Thanks for watching - Mike J

I suspect this is something most drummer’s do in songs (think certain times of punk and metal), but often don’t contemplate what it is they’re doing. This is some great food for thought, and something to slow down and work on. 👍

Changing the sub-divisons is something I practice all the time to try to improve my internal clock, while still using a metronome. I'm also a big fan of using space, or rests, rather than another note, I find it can really increase, or decrease the tension. Thanks for the video, Mike.

I remember watching you on here before youtube was really a thing like 15 years ago. The double bass with one foot days. Taught me a lot back then.

Love this. Will work on it. The ‘handbrake’ part seems more challenging somehow. Flawlessly executed and taught … just like those mics perfectly lined up in the tea room!

You may be underselling the utility of the Rambo knife. Especially for anyone born before 1985. But a great drum concept, regardless.

Very good point. The needle and thread inside to sew up my wounds would have come in VERY handy after a few different altercations with a halfpipe, LOL

First... Ha ha... Great lesson! Thanks! I actually would work on my kit with triplets with paradiddle sticking just to get used to switching the down beat to feel it differently on my hands.

Great lesson. I'm just going to have to start with quarter notes and then progress from there. Still hard for me to hear and comprehend any triplet based concepts. Just left the live lesson ;) Two finger windshield wiper... Corey

Take the 6 note sticking that fits perfectly in 16th note triplets. Every time it repeats you're on a downbeat.... transcribe it on paper. Now take the same exact sticking and transcribe as plain old 16th notes. When the pattern repeats you'll be 1.5 beats later instead of on a downbeat. You Don't hit a downbeat until the third cycle. If you write it out and work on it slowly, you'll see it, then you'll play it, then it will eventually become part of you. Perhaps an easier way to start is just play the first few pages of "Stick Control" as triplets... same concept, write it down to see it.
