This scene is genius, since Jack is the reincarnation of Grady he's basically "talking" to his former self. Grady being a ghost has no recollection on his life and gruesome fate hence why he's surprised by Jack's statement on killing his family. But the hotel soon possesses Grady as a "puppet" and talks him into killing his own family. Being located on an indian burial ground, the hotel is a structure of history. A prison. Anyone killed in there is trapped there and becomes a part of the hotel's history. Anyone who has the shining can see visions of things that have happened there and will happen. Which is why Danny is considered a threat to the hotel, and must be 'corrected.'

Usually in shot compositon, when two characters talk, the shots will always be composed so that each character stays on the same side of the shot, the camera is kept within a certain radius of the initial shot. Here that rule is broken and when the camera cuts to the other side of the bathroom, where Torrance was initially on the left half of the shot, he will jump to the right. The effect is very uncanny but also subconscious, implying visually that he and Grady are the same person. If you were to take stills of one shot from one half of the room and one from the other and play them back and forth very fast you would get an effect of Torrance blending into Grady, much like the visual effect of a Pokemon evolution. Later on in the scene the shots are composed so that Torrence is facing grady in front of a mirror, but it appears that Torrance is looking into the mirror, with Grady looking back.

Yeah, I know (referring to the correction you made). But Jack is in such a daze here that he doesn't realize that there are 2 Gradys and in this scene he assumes that Delbert is Charles. Charles is definitely a reincarnation of Delbert since Jack says he recognizes him from the photo that Ullman showed him earlier in this scene, but the photo he saw earlier was Charles. So they must look exactly the same like Jack & his ancestor. Yet another thing Jack "overlooked" while in the Overlook hotel.

@wtcvidman12 жыл бұрын
So with that said, I interpret this scene as Jack talking to 2 Gradys. If you remember the interview scene, Mr. Ullman talked about how Charles Grady killed his wife & 2 daughters in 1970. The Grady here is Delbert Grady, not Charles Grady, and based on the ballroom & the guests, Delbert was alive in the 1920's. So like Jack Torrance, Delbert was also reincarnated as Charles Grady. I think the curse keeps reincarnating those associated with it until their bloodline is ended.
@juulcarolaquant5254 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly!
@wtcvidman4 жыл бұрын
@Juul Carola Quant Yeah my theory is as the scene in the bathroom begins, Jack is talking to Delbert Grady from the 1920's. We don't know if Delbert killed his family like Charlies did, but if he did, the Delbert Jack was talking to seems to be from a time before he did such a thing. It's likely he didn't kill them because if he did, Charles would've never been born. My guess is since the hotel was cursed due to being built on an Indian burial ground, the goal of the curse was to wipe out the bloodlines of the generation who built the hotel and worked in & for it. So therefore, those who didn't kill their family, thus allowing their bloodline to continue, were cursed to be reincarnated until they did and their bloodline was eradicated. But anyway, notice how peaceful & humble he is in the 1st part of the when his back is turned and we see mostly Jack's face. He even seems older and his appearance seems different. Then when the camera changes and Jack is being "interrogated" my theory says he's talking to Charlies Grady who seems younger and much more sinister & aggressive. Delbert from the 1920's did not have any recollection of killing his family and it makes sense why he thought Jack was always the caretaker because he served under him and has no recollection of any other caretaker at the hotel. But when the pendulum swings, Charles has no problem remembering how he "corrected" his wife and daughters in the 1970's, which Mr. Ullman himself confirmed at the beginning of the film. And he urges Jack to take the same path that he himself did in the 70's. So the Torrance of the 1920's must have been reincarnated as Jack because he didn't kill his family (or left some members alive) which makes sense because if he was successful, Jack & Danny would've never existed. So Jack was cursed to be reincarnated until he killed his family which is why he was drawn to the hotel and brought his family with him and fell under the "spell" of the hotel and its ghosts, causing him to go insane. Charles & Delbert would be the same soul/spirit, but the curse of the hotel would have them appear as 2 (with the whole duality theme of the film) & allow them to remember their lives seperately in its manipulation of Jack. It's brilliant actually because it uses the innocence of Delbert to draw Jack in and make him think he was always the caretaker and then does a bait & switch when it activates the memories of Charles to draw Jack in further to commit murder so it could finally claim Jack.
@juulcarolaquant5254 жыл бұрын
@@wtcvidman Very intriguing! I always felt like the Overlook itself was the master of evil, who speaks through former killer Grady to the next killer, Jack into telling him to "correct" his kid and wife, like he probably was told to do. I guess that's what makes the Shining such a different film in the genre of horror: it leaves room for your own interpretation.
@wtcvidman4 жыл бұрын
@@juulcarolaquant525 Yeah there are a lot of interesting interpretations I've come across. I'm glad Kubrick took the freedoms he did to make the film different from the novel.
@wtcvidman12 жыл бұрын
Also Ullman said Charles Grady's children were 8 & 10, yet the girls in the hallway were twins (definitely not 2 years apart). So I guess they too were reincarnated as twins and someone from Delbert's family survived to have spawned Charles. Similarly, I think Danny was also reincarnated & that Tony (Danny's "friend") is the part of Danny's soul that remembers what happened in his previous life & is protecting him from having the same fate again.

"I should know sir. I've ALWAYS been here,": the cold realization that Grady is the darkness that inhabits The Overlook, and maybe mankind.

There´s something about the twenties that apparently make that decade one of the best for ghosts, at least in movies

I like the fact that if you really look closely at Nicholson, he isnt looking directly at Philip Stone who plays Grady. Hes consistantly looking in the mirror. It make sit all the more alarming and despite the fact that Grady is standing there it shows that Jack really is imagining him there. Great film making.

He has already lost the plot by this point of the film but that doesn't mean Grady and the other spirits aren't still there remember room 237 he clearly sees a woman in a bath tub before we see her in the mirror.

Grady at this point represents the "presence " in the hotel as when he says he has always been here.

Uploads of this scene always cut right before Philip Stone's face of pure malevolence. For me, the most chilling image in the movie & one thing this movie has no lack of is chilling images.

Here's my take on this scene. The contrast of the restroom, going from posh to bright red, is that Jack is actually now physically in the present. And because he's staring at the mirror the entire time, there is no Grady at all, rather he's just talking to himself

Edward Bliss Actually the director confirmed in an interview that the ghosts really do haunt the hotel and not just the minds of the Torrances.

How the freak do you interpret the true meaning of who Jack Torrance actually is? This one scene is probably the most important scene in the entire movie as to what may tell the viewer what is actually going on, and yet Kubric is cleaver enough to leave it unanswered and to our imaginations to figure out. Grady says he has alwasy been there and that Mr. Torrance has "Always" been the Care Taker. Where does Danny fit into this? Is Mr. Torrance a Spirit in physical form from the get go?

Notice the background ball room music, the same music we hear at the end with the photograph showing Jack Torrence in the ballroom. I believe this is the "exchange" of souls between Grady and Torrence

I believe that the twin girls are a symbol for the twin doors of room 237 (where Jack and Danny's deepest fears lie). They are not, however, Charles' twins, simply because at the beginning they were said to be 8 and 10 years old. I think that the two girls were reincarnated to coax Danny into room 237, and were the just one of the Overlook's patrons reincarnated to represent something else.

Some people say Jack Nicholsons portrayal of Jack Torrance was cheesy or over the top, but as someone who's legitimately watched someone completely lose their mind in a similar way, it's honestly pretty realistic

Charles Grady went mad and began to lose touch with his own identity. He started to call himself Delbert Grady. When he murdered his family it created a ripple of chaotic evil that jack torrance has been pulled into. So when he hears the name Delbert instead of Charles, he is not confused for a moment

The bit I love most is that first minute where they're both kind of upbeat, until we find out the butler's name is the same(ish) as the guy who killed his family, and then they keep on with the upbeat conversation while this kind of simmers in the background.
