Cockroaches are known to carry diseases such as salmonella, E. coli, and more. Their movements can potentially spread these pathogens to surfaces and food items, increasing the chances of infection if the contaminated food is consumed.

Canned foods are good past the expiration date, as long as the cans aren't rusty and the lid hasn't popped. I would have only been concerned with the boxed food.

Pro organizer here. I have been organizing for over 15 years and the one thing that all of my true hoard clients have in common is they almost always are either teachers or in the medical field mostly nurses. I truly believe this is a personality issue that makes these people choose these careers and have hoarding tendencies. This pantry is a height level 4 hoard and I don’t know what your ground rules were with her, but expiration dates are hard and fast rule especially for hoarders. This always something i put into contracts.

Wow, so sorry you had that experience. If the homeowner had taken the time to do what she said, why wouldn’t she just have discarded what was expired? I find it hard to believe with as much as you had to clear prior to organizing that she would have been able to get to those shelves. If I knew cockroaches, live or dead were in there, it would have all gone to the trash. You did an amazing job as always and attempted to discuss it with her. If it were me, would have been beyond grateful for your time, the free service and a clean, organized pantry!

You did such a good job there. Perhaps the homeowner feels bad about the waste of food and then you get to be the scapegoat. There was way too much food in there and I hope they get the food buying under control. I loved it when the Minimal Mom said that she decided to let the supermarket store and manage the food so she wouldn´t have to keep it in her home and manage it there. So freeing - now I always keep that in mind when deciding what to buy.

100% - I heard this once somewhere in my minimalist journey and never forgot it. “I store everything at the store!!” Basically, I keep 1 week’s worth of food on hand at once. We use Costco for the non-perishables like toilet paper and detergent. Some food is purchased in bulk, but only the stuff we eat lots of.

My mom is the same way. No matter how much work and knowledge I put in to helping her, she'll always fixate on the one thing that I did "wrong." After a week or so she is able to be more rational and appreciative. I think it's a control issue or something else psychological -- some people really struggle with accepting help.

I’m sure she was surprised at the amount of trash/expired items. She was probably mad at the situation she clearly created and directed her frustration at you. The few things she thought shouldn’t have been thrown away clearly had bugs in them, otherwise you wouldn’t have thrown it away. But some people don’t understand how gross roaches are. They leave skid marks on everything.

You did an absolute amazing job! It is very obvious that by her final reaction she has some type of hoarding disorder and is unable to let things go. I hope she gets some therapy so it doesnt turn into a bigger issue because it was very unsanitary and unsafe considering those creepy crawlies were there. And ingesting old food isnt any better. Dont ever get discouraged by someone who isnt satisfied and ungrateful for your hard work. Its a deeper rooted issue that they need help with. You are amazing and i cant wait to see your next video! You are incredible! Of course you disposed of contaminated items of any sort. I would worry about mixes, rice, and any boxed items even in date, because hidden bugs could have crept in there. I guess she isn’t bothered by finding things. She had sooo many of each item. No one can use all that before expiration. There is something wrong when a person hoards so many of the same item. You were more than kind to do this for her. She clearly has money to buy tons of food. She could have paid for someone to clean and declutter it, but chose to take advantage of you, and then treat you rudely.

70 trash bags of expired food indicates hoarding so home owner's displeasure of the job seems to go along with the hoarder's emotional attachment and unwillingness to get rid of stuff even if expired or roach presence. Homeowners minimalizing presence of roaches also a concern and trait of a hoarder. You did an AMAZING thing for this homeowner. Renee, you are an absolute Saint for working so hard on this horrible situation, with fanastic results.....even though the lady didn't appreciate it. Yes, i would have absolutely thrown out everything that I even thought a bug had crossed or came in contact with. Also, in no way would i have jeopardized my children's health by leaving infested food or other items they could have contact with or would have eaten. You could have a great business helping people who would pay to get organized even though you do this for free and with so much kindness. Sometimes people just don't have the time they need or they are taking care of sick loved ones or in similar life situations, and just can't get to everything that needs doing. I guarantee you, help someone in this situation and they will be forever grateful.

This is why you need to keep an organised pantry! I buy extra of stuff when it’s on special but I rotate and organise my food so it doesn’t get wasted! Hey everyone.. Im from slovenia.. We have totaly different mindset with food. We dont have a whole closet for "food pantry".. We have a cuboard in kitchen for food. For us it is soo disrespectful, unecological, uneconomical to have such amount of food at home. We buy just what is necessary for two weeks. We are grateful for every plate of food, and very sad when we throw out even a small slice of bread!! She is a pantry hoarder! And since you/we have observed cockroaches on the floor, I would almost throw away anything that had been opened. And paper bags and cardboard boxes bring roaches. As for expiration vs sell by dates, I would take the non perishables that passed or soon to be the local food bank, they should take it and it would get used immediate! Perhaps you have encountered someone who is struggling with other issues and is taking it out on you, because you were able to do something they were unable to do. I have encountered this with a relative, who was very reluctant to throw out cake mixes that mice had gotten into, as well as had soiled everything around that food. She was not happy when the family threw everything away for her safety.

PS: My "pantry" consists of one small shelf in a kitchen cabinet, I have made all but about 10 of my meals this year from scratch, and I have not starved yet. PPS I don't buy for a SECOND that the new food was behind the old food. They couldn't even get to the shelves. And whining about a few discarded bits of paperware when there are bugs running around your pantry is just childish on the homeowner's part. PPPS The mother-in-law could have told you what the homeowner told you about the new food being behind the old food. She didn't.

It was obvious there was going to be a lot of expired stuff bcz the way the floor was so packed it just didn’t look like they could get to the stuff on the shelves. It did seem like you were checking all the dates not just the ones in the front. Atleast you didn’t actually throw away her food just bagged it all up. Clearly you did her a great service. It needed to be done and now the pantry is usable again. They def have a food hoarding issue and many items that weren’t food in the pantry. I don’t think they rotated the new food any time recently based on how bad the floor was. But atleast they have a clean slate and they can work together on putting what she wanted to keep back. The most important thing is you gave them a huge head start. And it was done for free. Maybe next time she will be home if she ever has an organizer over again. Keep up the good work. You have the patience of a saint !

Hoarder house! Clue #1: You couldn't get the door open. Clue #2: Food was 13 years old. Probably older than her kids! Clue #3: MIL watched the whole time despite you having reputably cleaned her house. This homeowner is clinging to compost. If she has to spray for roaches, it's time to remove the source attracting them. Her threatened, passive aggressive reaction and refusal to talk to you are hallmarks of disordered thinking. As a teacher, she is well aware of basic classroom health & sanitation laws. She's mentally ill. And MIL knows it. Auri and Midwest Cleaning Magic say this family needs to achieve certain therapy milestones before they will be ready to let go of their hoard. Removing it directly threatened their sense of wellbeing. Not your fault. Keep doing what you do. It was BEAUTIFUL and sanitary. Wonderful!

I think you did the correct thing in bagging up all of the expired items and any items that roaches may have been on or in. the home owner surely would not want to serve food to her family or friends on paper plates that a roach may have defecated on, and just one look at the 'before' pictures shows that the home owner has no idea about food hygine or stock rotation, shame on her for trying to make out you did a poor job. Anyone else would have taken one look at that mess and walked away, well done you.

I started out feeling sympathy for the lady and praying someone would take away her SAM’S and COSTCO cards. I felt bad that so much of her stockpile had to go, but I was thrilled you salvaged so much. NO, any sign of roaches, weevils, flies..dead or alive…it goes. If it’s been on the floor it goes. Believe me, bugs today..rats tomorrow. She should have bowed down to you and given you flowers! What an unpleasant and ungrateful response to all your work. It looks terrific!

I would definitely have thrown out anything touched by a cockroach. You never know what germs they have in them and whether they have laid eggs on anything. Yes, I would have thrown out the bug infested, crawled over items, edible or not. The homeowner blamed the exterminator for the bugs not her house keeping habits. After looking at the before pictures and the after, you can tell that the homeowner has hording issues, and it will take a professional to help her. The end result that you did it wonderful. Have you thought of food grade diatomaceous earth? When I saw those roaches on the floor that’s the first thing I thought of. It will keep bugs and other stuff away. Just make sure it says food grade!
