Here's another story about North Korean football. In 2012 the Olympics took place in London in the UK. The mens and womens football contests started before the opening ceremony in stadiums across the country. The night before the games officially started, I went to see the womens tournament start with France v USA and North Korea v Colombia in Glasgow. When North Korea came out for their game, they were introduced with the South Korean flag rather than their own. The North Korean officials took the players off the field and refused to let their womens team start the game for 1 hour. Only once the North Korean flag was used to introduce them was the game started. My picture of the South Korean flag ended up getting used around the world as the Olympics didn't explain the reason for the delay and no-one else appeared to get a decent photo of the incorrect flag (the only other one I saw was from the official video feed taken from the other end of the stadium). No-one explained the reason for the delay in the stadium either. North Korea went on to win that match 2-0, but went out after losing to France and USA. Wonder what happened to the players?

The real reason why the North Koreans lost that day in 1966 because the team members didn't sleep well the night prior due to the fact they had to stay at a Catholic dormitory in Liverpool (venue of their next match vs Portugal). Thank you for saying there hasn't been a peace treaty, because the situation on the peninsula is much more complex than just "division, war, and here we are". The DPRK and ROK don't recognize each other as countries. Rather they view Korea as one nation with two different governments. With each government claiming to be the sole legitimate government. Because of this, if they have a DPRK or ROK passport, they cannot visit each other. And it doesn't help that when it comes to finding a solution for the peninsula, nations like the US, Israel, Japan, France, Estonia, and Botswana don't recognize the DPRK. While South Korea is recognized by all except the DPRK for the reason I already listed. It's sad that the same culture has been divided in two for so long that they have drifted so far apart from each other...families who are separated because of the DMZ have been given very little opportunity to see their loved ones again. 2000 and more recently under Moon Jae-in brought hope for change. But now, all that hope with increasing tensions has been crumbled up

The players realized the situation, and understood that the goverment wanted the population to belive they were watching the oficial brazilian team play against the nacional team. The players from atlético wanted to go for the win at first, but realized that they didint know what would happen to the korean players and decided to go for a draw 0x0.

Fact: When East Germany made its first and only trip to the World Cup in 1974 (ironically, in West Germany), the "fans" were mostly people from the MfS or the most loyal of loyal to the regime (including party apparatchiks). The same went on with other international events like Euro qualifiers or the Olympic Games. Even in international club competitions, East German teams never took their actual fans along for any trip along unless they were themselves in the MfS or an apparatchik.

Good video. Just one small side note: the 2010 World Cup was in South Africa, not Brazil. And it's REALLY hard, neigh-on impossible to really know what happened and didn't happen in North Korea. The horrific tales the survivors and defectors say are not always true (though, sadly, many times the are) - many have been caught lying to make it look worse (although, once again, many told the pure truth which was just as horrific - North Korea is a genuinely horrific place). There has been an urban legend around that the North Korean state media (and there's no other kind of media there really) reported that the team won the 2010 World Cup (which in reality they didn't come even close to being close - it would be like the New York media claiming the Super Bowl last yar was played by the Jets and Giants). In reality this probably didn't happen - but there is this "probably"... Here is a good viseo about this, btw: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4etfoefibN4etk

That's a curious case The truth behind it was that some people from south korea made it to laugh at their northern neighbours, but it went viral all over the world and people in the west bought that crap thinking it was happening in north korea and people actually believed it, so the real idiots were the westerners By the way in north korea they could watch the results 24 hours after the match according to sources from that region, they have censorship but not as ridiculous as the joke video stated

Kim jung un's explination of sports and war is not far off. American football was basically invented to a mirror a military strategy game and they used the sport to promote the military. (They still do even) wide receivers used to be called flankers, the formation names shotgun and pistol are not accidental, and the term blitz is a reference to blitzkrieg the nazi era tank strategy that almost won them ww2.

As it emerged later, the World Cup '66 North Korean team wasn't purged because of partying, or anything like that. At the time, Kim Il-sung was conducting a sweeping purge of his government ministers, many of whom had been guerrillas with him during the 1930s. The Sports Ministry was one of the targeted ministries, and the country's national football/ soccer team was a collateral victim of the purge. That's it.
