My biggest pet peeve in the industry lately is the weird parasocial relationship people have with game developers, trying telling YOUR employer that fixing the garden, making the food, or cranking the pipes is not your "Passion project", and you would rather "Do something else", that means shit to me, like you said Samito, either do the work or go home, that's not even mentioning you're lucky if you make half as much as a Blizzard developer, AND you pay them money for entertainment, use your wallets not your asses people, stop resonating with anti-competitor white collar freeloafer developers that make shit products and proceed to make excuses about timelines and lack or resources, that will NOT FLY in any other business.

from a software engineers perspective who's worked at companies with 500+ devs to startups with 3 devs, I 100% agree with Kaplan when it comes to the team not needing more resources. 150 people working on overwatch is plenty. you dont just improve something by throwing more people at it. Once youre at a certain scale, all thats going to do is slow down development, and kaplan knew they were at that tipping point. The real issue was just that the vision for the game was flawed, and the resources they had were focused on the wrong thing, the PvE. All they had to do was improve and expand on what made the game great, the PvP. Lack of resources wasnt the issue, it was the vision for the game.
@eddyjimm2 ай бұрын

Like everything in life, it’s complicated. It’s not black and white it’s grey. Bobby Kotick was awful, but at least he saw the potential for Overwatch League and wanted two teams so that the live service game could be supported while they worked on PVE. However, that likely would’ve spurred a decline in IP integrity (like we’ve seen now with all the goofy collabs and gooner skins) and quality. Jeff had his heart in the right place, he wanted to bring us an even more ambitious game than Overwatch and wanted to take his elite team to greater heights than, in his mind, a simple PVP game. Sadly the best scenario was in the middle. They should’ve had Esports experts, pros, and game designers (Sam even) helping support the live game with balance and trying to create a “proper” and sensible way to play OW instead of leaving us to suffer in GOATS/double shield. They could’ve consciously created healthy and varied metas where each team could execute their own style of play instead of being forced to play to the one “correct” way. In the meantime Jeff could’ve led the efforts to make PVE/OW2. Honestly though, it would’ve have been that hard for anyone who cares to balance the game well (literally 3-5x better than it was wouldn’t even be that hard), but Blizzard was also just too stubborn and “holier than thou” due to their history and reputation. It’s almost like it was just not meant to be. We just were not blessed to exist in the timeline where OW wasn’t hamstrung by these unfortunate business realities. Here’s to hoping they do the 6v6 experiment right and address all the things they failed to address before and then OW can take its place as the greatest multiplayer FPS game of all time. It has the potential. It was nearly already there. Just needs to be optimized.

I feel like it's more of a lack of focus and bad vision that led to the downfall of OW. They say they worked on PVE for 5 years, but they were also helping the development of OW League, simultaneously adding updates to OW1 while trying to make OW2. If they wanted to commit to OW2, they should've gone all in. However, I also think Jeff Kaplan's long-term vision for the game was detrimental to its success. They made a fantastic PVP game but were so tunnel-visioned on the original plan that they failed to see the game for what it truly was.
@Stanky_Foot2 ай бұрын
Real. Jeff really fucked up because he had a vision but not the know how to make it a reality, it's cool to have a vision, just make sure to not tell it to millions of overwatch fans around the world and then flake out because it isn't feasible leaving fans disillusioned.
@nyeonii2 ай бұрын
Something I don’t hear people talk about is the inherent disconnect between creating a MMO game out of Overwatch. The “run” phase of Kaplan’s plan never would have worked because the unique personalities, designs, and abilities of the heroes are what made people fall in love with the game. But in MMO’s a large part of the appeal is character creation and customization. There is a big difference between playing a generic warrior class and playing as Reinhardt for example. People loved Overwatch because they loved playing as the unique cast of heroes.

No. They are much more and require much more. They are art. And the current industry does not understand that. And thats why they are doomed to fail. Thats why gaming has been dying for years now. Soulless corporations have taken over everything. This is the entire reason things like elden ring and dark souls have blown up so large and alot of indie games. Its the passion, uniqueness, detail, etc. Thats gaming. And most of the games out have lost any soul they once had.

@@Hot_SpicyGrill don't give me that. many things overwatch wanted to do in PVE was the same stuff you saw in Battleborn. Storymissions where your character can level up and choose different ability mutations to have a different feel to it. It was already made before and the scope overwatch was aiming at was not even that much higher than what battleborn came out with. They also made the game from the ground up new. You can not tell me that a company with that huge a budged could not even roughly copy their "competitor" from when overwatch 1 came out. The only thing their scope was failing at was the spaghetti code they used for the game to work in the beginning. It took them months to try and implement 6v6 again because their engine was not capable of working correctly anymore with the original format. You know the whole "Crawl, walk, Run" mentality they had for overwatch? Since overwatch 2 came out it looks like a mirrored version of that is happening in the team. First they ran to push that game out, then they walked for the first year or so trying to make everything fit to the new 5v5 format and then everything became a crawl for even the smallest new things.

Number one argument from a streamer I was following for years, why Overwatch 2 is a good thing was always Ow1 wasnt making any money. Everyone had enough credits to buy all event skins anyways. And my counter argument was "just make more color variants". Imagine 2-3 legi each with 3 color variants. 3-4 epics each 3 color variants. Noone would have had enough credits to buy all, people would have started to get lootboxes. While writing this and thinking back to Overwatch 1, I really miss it, I really want it back. I think they should add a system where if you or a teammate is playing their main and the enemy team counter swaps and Hard counters and focuses and losing from not swaping should reccomend or force counters and or a hero ban for the one person only like for the match or next few matches, half the time it's ego mains blaming their team for them being hard countered and another system where the team can reccomend hero comps and suggest hero to swap to with a new ui that gives you something to do in spawn. I also think there should be a system that prevents self healing and reduces damage on supports who only dps and blames their team for not being god tier players that don't need heals, like make it so when supports self heal it doesn't count towards their overall healing on the board. most of this should apply to those dying or losing as a hero over n over, just a thought.

I wonder, if we stop calling Overwatch a shooter, and call it what it is, a moba, would we see a better role distribution? If you sell the game as a shooter, you will mostly attract the people who the damage roles were made for (yes, I said roles, back in the day the role was split between offense and Defense). The damage role is the most popular, has almost always been the most popular. I, and friends of mine avoided OW because we thought it was a shooter. Most of us came from RPGs, MMOs, Mobas, and other games. Most of us also became support or tank mains. Also, the disaster that is Overwatch 2, is prove that Jeff was 100% correct. Needing to upscale doesn't make the upscale offered good. We see what we got without Jeff. Yes, Jeff needed a second team, but he needed a team that worked with his team. I side with Jeff, id rather play during the content drought than now. Junkensteins Lab only goes so far, the rest of the game is trash.

What you say about mobile games is so true, people forget that activision blizzard is actually activision blizzard king and king (the company that makes candy crush) is one of their biggest earners. Mobile games have global reach, quick development times and huge revenue, they are the perfect moneymaker for games companies, the only problem with mobile games is that they struggle to create big brands, the exception that i can think of is clash of clans which has a fantastic brand behind it which sells merch easily. Overwatch is one of the best brands in gaming, all of the characters are immediately recognisable as being overwatch and all of characters have huge individual fanbases (and rule 34, dont google at work), mixing that brand with the insane moneymaking potential if mobile gaming is just good business, im surprised they havent used the brand in a mobile game sooner.
