According to Lovecraft: If Azathoth were to ever wake up, we would all seize to exist. As every living thing, old god and human, galaxy and planet, is a product of his dream. So, no, he isn't awake. However, given the Shadow's wanting to wake him, seems like he's Nyarlathotep and that is why Cthulu was so pissed at seeing Andrew. He knew it was one of Nyarlathotep's new pawns trying to wake up Azahoth and end all existence. Andrew isn't setting out to change his dreams and bring back his daughter, he's being manipulated still by Nyarlathotep to wake up Azathoth.

I cringed a bit when Cuthulu started laughing like a cartoon villain when you got an audience with him. That went from zero to a hundred with how he went from seeing you to speak and then ranting about the extinction of humanity
