I can't stress enough how important this kind of shot is. Just being able to perform this drill consistently will get you ahead of most players. It's the foundation of your defensive game. If you want to learn more about the defensive side of pool, watch the two videos listed at the top of the video description. 👊🎱

Really important reminder that practicing safety shots helps with many aspects of your game including speed control and angles. Things that amateurs like me forget all the time. 👍🏻🎱

This is important part of game, just like the intro said. I put practice time into it. Great video!

I often sell-out the game when I try this sort of safety shot. Thanks for the reminder to make them a regular part of my practice!

My wife and I don't play safety shots cause it already takes us forever to finish a nine ball game! LOL

I was doing a similar drill and had trouble getting the OB to lay on the rail, determined I was hitting the OB too thick, I started hitting it much thinner and softer, then it started looking like yours, the OB on one rail and the CB on the other. Thank you for creating and posting your videos 😊

Cool way to practice those shots. Ypu can do it as a challenge with a friend and that makes it more fun

What I like about safety play when I do it is also to just keep your opposition thinking if you don’t think it’s good enough it still will keep them thinking on what to do

Great idea for a drill. The more I play the more I realize how important playing safe is.

Huge respect and thanks to you for being one of the people that actually competes and still finds time to share your knowledge. In July I’m moving to Nashville from London and I plan on competing. I’ll be getting my own table in my house too. I’m thinking of getting a Diamond table with 4” pockets because that’s the hardest table I’ve played on so far. What are your thoughts on choosing that for a table please? Thanks again man 🙏
@Sharivari6 күн бұрын
@@jamesjames77777 Thank you. Yes, that table is a great pick!

I think this is important to have in the repertoire, but it depends alot on the opponent if you want to engage in a 1 ball safety battle or not. I think practicing 2-way bank shots are just as effective for these scenarios. But good stuff to learn, so thanks as always for a good video!
@Sharivari7 күн бұрын
@@2colossery That's true. Just keep in mind that this shot will also come up dozens of times when there is more than one ball on the table.

I would say 3:45 is a fail. There is just enough angle to cut that in the corner pocket. Thanks for this drill. I need to work on my defense because I'm a overly offensive player.
@miramichi303 күн бұрын
That cut looks like it would be 50-50 even for a pro player though.

These shots are very good to know how to play but some of them are very tough to pull off and mistakes can be made and even if you do pull them off the opponent may just fire it in anyway. I have confidence I can make many off those leaves and a big believer it’s just as hard or harder to play a good safety than it is to go for it and make it. How many times have players played safe then the opponent fires it in. Tough call at times. Part of the game. Cheers

7:35 your trainee is playing the shot kinda weird. He should just have rolled it. Niels Feijen once showed this shot but in this case it was not necessary 😊

got a question what kind of pool cues do you use?
@davidwilliams44985 күн бұрын
Safety is part of game Why miss an leave them an easy shot an lose game. Always look at on a very hard shot you know you most likely wont make to leave cue ball in a spot where they also have a hard shot..

Not sure if you have a video on this, but how to adjust to faster tables when you’re used to a bar table. I’m a good player and for some reason I found a rut on a table that was much faster than I’m used to. Does it change the shot line on cuts is there a “skid” or something to be mindful of?

I did an online session with Alex Lely. He has me doing this drill too.👍
@dougquara63023 күн бұрын
@sharivari, would you agree that this student can benefit from controlling speed by backstroke length rather than fore stroke speed? He seems to use a full-length stroke for all speeds. Lemme know if you agree.

@GenXMusicMan6 күн бұрын
Same here. Most bar table players hate league rules and believe that “defensive shots are for sissies.” I’ll shoot straight up in a bar unless I’m playing someone who’s familiar with BCA or APA rules.

Lol. Sounds like a skill issue.

Anyone who can't play defense in pool would call this a prick shot... If it's an impossible shot, play safe
