This happened to my friend & I in Puerto Vallarta this year at an inclusive resort. Last thing we both remembered was doing one shot of tequila together. It was only our 2nd drink of day in shallow end of pool at swim up bar. We woke up 8hrs later in a Mexican hospital with staff speaking Spanish demanding payment. We took Uber back to resort and changed flights immediately taking the very next flight early in the morning back to NY. The flight was in afternoon but we felt safer sitting in the airport for hours then in that resort. Our belongings in the room were ransacked. They magically knew which purses at the pool were ours so that we had payment on our person when we woke up in hospital. I’m thankful to be alive and will never go back.

This case is just a small part of a bigger problem that exists at vacation destinations around the world that has nothing to do with tainted alcohol. Vacation destinations cover up murders and suspicious deaths of ALL types just to save the reputation of the whole resort community itself. This includes local cops trying to "solve" tourist murders by framing anyone who accompanied the victim to the resort city rather than looking at local suspects. I know of one such case that happened in Myrtle Beach SC involving a local couple from SC itself. So you don't even need to go abroad or even leave your local area to get hurt and then get screwed over at a vacation destination.

I had always wanted to go to Mexico until afew years ago when someone from my hometown in the UK was killed. She was with her husband and had been drinking and they were getting a taxi back to hotel. The husband was found at the side of the road with head injuries and the wife was found on the other side deceased with multiple injuries. All their valuables had been taken and the police ruled it an accident on the basis that they had been drinking and both fell into cars etc. There was no criminal charges even though 1. They sought a taxi to there hotel and were found 20k from the hotel 2. They had been hit and left for dead 3. They had all valuables taken and 4. The family did there own toxicology reports and found that they had been poisoned by the level of methanol. Mexico is corrupt and the response from the government implies the corruptness.

The tainted alcohol theory as an unintentional accident has its flaws. There was an entire group of teenagers drinking and only two - who happened to be siblings! -- were affected. This is highly suspicious and indicates they may have been targeted. I would like to know how thorough the autopsy was and if it included, for example, signs of sexual assault. I cannot imagine, no matter how intoxicated, how a girl could injure herself so badly in the shallow end of a pool. I also feel there had to be witnesses (the other teenagers among them). This was high-season in a popular resort; people had to be everywhere.
@cherbrown1920 Жыл бұрын
This is just a visual, but i know that resort was pricey and that family looked like a nice upper class family and i wonder if those two were targeted or if the whole group was given bad alcohol and maybe the rest of the group just was bigger drinkers? It reeks of a cover up and reeks of the fact that it was on purpose....i would also love to know what the other people in the group saw right before and right after.

I most definitely believe they targeted certain people. Maybe the bartender heard the parents say how long they would be gone, or he saw mom hand money over, or he planned an assault. There is corruption in almost everything in Mexico. The workers probably created certain criteria for spiking a drink and would get paid to spike a drink on request. Scary for sure!

I was so lucky to call it an early night and find my way back to the hotel. I know my limits and I have never been that drunk. I was throwing up all night, and couldn't get out of bed the next day. It was a nightmare that I'll never forget. I'm pretty sure I had alcohol poisoning. That was about 15 years ago, and I can't recall ever feeling that bad after a few drinks. I lived in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico for five years, teaching English and exploring the ruins and cenotes. It is very likely that in many cases, bartenders and bar managers are swapping the “nice” booze the resort buys, for cheap adulterated booze, in order to make a little bit of money. When I lived there, most hotel employees were earning under $100 USD a month, and until very recently, the very traditional Catholic nation frowned upon birth control, and women still stayed home and raised children. It was bizarre because in many ways it was very much stuck in the last century. One year, 1998 I think, there was an entire unarmed village of indigenous people slaughtered by the Mexican army. That felt like I was stuck TWO. Centuries ago! On the news they showed all the dead. Arranged in order of size for some reason, these people were laced out on their backs, completely exposed to the air, and the cameras, with not one single relative or family member remaining to protest the undignified treatment; they were arranged from newborn baby along in a line, about 35 people, ending in the tallest member of the village. These were indigenous people in Chiapas or thereabouts who were in some kind of dispute with the government over the land where their people had been for centuries. They had no guns, no tanks. They had only subsistence farming, machetes, and a handful of pregnant women, small children, and older people trying to survive. Mexico is not safe. Cancun is marginally safer because the tourist industry is hugely profitable, and if too many people get hurt it will cost them, but most people don’t go to Cancun twice. Generally speaking, it’s overpriced and shitty. You can definitely find cool stuff, Tulum, Cenotes, Ruins, etc…BUT over serving and roofies, rape and even kidnapping are very common. ❤Stay Safe.

We went to a resort in Playa Del Carmen. I KNEW something was up with the alcohol. I had assumed they just “watered” it down, by mixing top shelf liquor with the cheap stuff. For context, I rarely ever drink, I had at least 5-6 mojitos, over the course of only a couple hours. If I would’ve been drinking that much anywhere else, I would’ve been asleep in a palm tree but I never even got buzzed. Afterwards, We ate dinner, laid around by the ocean, I was fine before I went to sleep. I woke up with a really high fever, no vomiting or anything, but my body felt like I had been run over by a car. Even when I used to drink, I NEVER mixed, if I started with vodka, I STUCK with vodka as to not get hung over. I’m 44, and have been hung over only once….the very first time I got drunk, when I was 17. Needless to say, I know how to handle my liquor. You’d think I had come down with the flu or something….nope, was totally fine the by the end of the night. Now, I DO get sun sick sometimes but hadn’t even been in the sun that long. Not to mention, when I do get sun sick, it’s within a couple hours of being out. Also, I noticed one of the bartenders kept trying to get me to drink something else but I had a weird feeling about the whole situation. He seemed genuinely concerned, OR he wanted me to drink the alcohol that was MUCH worse. He never came by me if I went to the bar with my husband or son, only when I was by myself or with my daughter. The other bartender was trying to get my daughter a drink, even after I said she wasn’t 18, he laughed and acted like he didn’t understand what I was saying. I assumed shaking your head, was universal for “no”. I debated if I should even share this because it sounds like I’m just complaining that I didn’t get drunk. My hope is that by sharing this maybe more will come forward. I am so incredibly sorry for the families that DID lose their loved ones, especially their children. Truly heartbreaking 😔

Out of all of the times I’ve drank before than and after, I have never experienced anything like that. It was such a scary experience not knowing how I went from being ok to being completely out of it in an instant. I truly believe I had bad alcohol.

There was no reason for me to black out after sipping 1 slushy drink.

In 2019 we to Chapala, Jalisco and had a pina colada and my husband had a corona but he told them not to open it he would do it. This was at a set up bar out on the beach. After I took about 3 sips and I mean sips beachside I didn’t want to finish it before my husband finished his bear as we only wanted one then go have dinner with drinks at the restaurant. I literally felt myself slipping away and it was scary, I told my husband something was wrong and to please not to leave me alone. I felt exactly how Anastasia felt when I was prepped for surgery. My husband didn’t now what was wrong he thought I was messing around and just wanted to take a nap by the lake. I was out without control for about an hour. When I woke up I was so sluggish for the rest of the evening we ended up going back to Guadalajara to our hotel. When they gave me my drink there was a table close to ours and all 6 young ladies had pina coladas delivered to them at the same time as me. Never again will I drink in Mexico unless I’m with someone who isn’t drinking. Take care.

Note to travelers- Mexico is a lawless country known to sell wood grain alcohol to tourists. Ideally, if you drink there you want to see the bottle opened and hear the crack of the safety seal. I live in a destination location and I have also worked in the hotel industry for a number of years. A lot of these Spanish hotels use cheap, off brand alcohol because they make more money doing so. At an all inclusive resort, your room rate covers food, beverage, labor, electricity, water and other operational expenses. They will and have supplied substandard food and beverage to guests to make more money. Always make sure you are drinking from a reputable liquor brand and or ask the alcohol % in inclusive beverages.
