While travelling like this when you have plenty of time to explore I would recommend never booking hotels online unless you have to. Just walk in, check the room at first and then ask about the price (sometimes the online price is still cheaper and then use it). If they don’t let you to see the room beforehand or the price doesn’t relate to the room quality just move on to the next one.

When you asked the Bánh Cuốn guy where he’s from he said Tỉnh Lẻ which means a small province, not Hà Nội or Tien Le like you made it out to be. And the province is called Nam Định. That’s the bit you struggle to understand 😅
