I've never been a huge fan of Hideyoshi because of his latter-year tyranny and paranoia, but sometimes you've just got to give the man his props; that was a boss move from a man who'd made a career out of making people feel insecure behind castle walls.
@bensfons4 жыл бұрын
It is only natural that Hideyoshi became paranoid seeing his hard earned power slowly slip from his hands. Happened to all sorts of powerfull man throught history.
@michael-vo5ol Жыл бұрын
Hideyoshi is nervous, knowing that anyone can eliminate him and take over the nation, heck, even a close vassal can turn on him just like what Mitsuhide did to Nobunaga at Honnoji. Speaking of potential threats to Hideyoshi, Ieyasu is the one man who is in a prime position to challenge him and despite the fact that Ieyasu kowtowed to Hideyoshi, the latter knew that Ieyasu’s making moves and plot ten steps ahead and if he’s left unchecked, Ieyasu might make moves to challenge the Toyotomi hegemony once again. If Nobunaga didn’t get whacked, I bet he would have snuffed out Hideyoshi and Ieyasu if they start showing signs of challenge towards his rule.
@nont18411 Жыл бұрын
@@michael-vo5ol As long as Ieyasu’s still alive, Hideyoshi can never be at rest. I mean, a guy murdered his own family to save his own ass from Nobunaga. If Ieyasu is capable to betray his own kin, then he is capable to betray anyone.

I am surprised you didn't mention the legendary Ishigakiyama Ichiya Castle, or One Night Castle in your video. The reason Toyotomi turned his siege camp into a huge party wasn't just to keep his troops from getting bored and demoralize the Hojo troops, though it did have that effect. The main reason was that it generated a ton of noise which in turn masked the sounds of construction from the nearby forested hilltop. On that hilltop, Toyotomi's forces built their own large fortification hidden behind a section of trees. When the construction was completed 80 days later, the trees were cut in the middle of the night. This gave the illusion that Toyotomi had the men, power, and skill to build an entire castle out of nothing in a single night. The Hojo surrendered 9 days later. After the siege, the Ichiya Castle was abandoned, and today it is a park. Many of the stone foundations and earthworks are still visible and it is a popular park for the locals. They even have a festival every October to commemorate the siege and the building of the castle.

@@evaniveson I know, right? I've been to Odawara Castle and Ishigakiyama Park. One night castle is front and center in every telling of the Siege of Odawara. For it to not even be mentioned here is bizarre. Ishigakiyama is a major part of the story here, not some obscure minor detail. How could he just omit it entirely? Makes you wonder what other important details he just doesn't bother to mention in his other videos.

Aww, I wanted to see the legendary story of how Date Masamune came late to the Siege of Odawara dressed in white and with a cross, ready to be punished to death for disobeying Hideyoshi at first, but Masamune's "style" was enough to impress Hideyoshi and save Masamune from death. I heard that it is even by this scene that the clan name "Date" became the word that means "stylish" and "dandy" in Japanese. But anyways, it was a cool video! I didn't know Houjou attempted to fight the Sanada again, and that this was the spark for the siege!
@supersasukemaniac3 жыл бұрын
to make the story more ridiculous, since Hideyoshi had actually outlawed Christianity in Japan, just carrying the cross could have been enough to get Masamune killed, but Hideyoshi was just so impressed by his stunt that he let him off.

I really enjoyed this video as a Christmas present you've given to us today! Now- I know the story of the end of the Sengoku period is not entirely complete and neither is the rest of the 1590s a time of relative peace for Japan itself- Now- The time for another separate chapter of Japanese history that would (in my opinion) be a very grey history that is full of ups and downs to not only the legacy of Hideyoshi and the house of Toyotomi but also the legacy of Japan as a nation on the world stage in Asia. You've talked about the Mongols invading Japan and the Japanese defiantly against all odds win against two invasions- Now...Is the time when the Japanese begin an invasion of their own in an attempt to establish an imperial hegemony over all of mainland Asia... It is time for the Imjin War saga!!! (Or Seven Years War) Three nations! (Ming, Toyotomi, and Joseon), one nation as a battleground! (Joseon), the fate of mainland Asia rests at the hands of the one who emerges victorious in this destructive war never seen in centuries!!! How it is told- I leave that to your liberty Sir Shogunate- MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Such an illustrious legacy of consistently good leadership, from Soun to Ujitsuna to Ujiyasu, now just vanished. Ujimasa knew that he was facing a behemoth bloc that could field competent armies of 200,000. No matter how strong the Hojo clan was, even if by some miracle they didn't manage to get crushed, they results would've been devastating anyway. All Ujimasa would've had to do to avoid it would've been to pay lip service to allegiance to Hideyoshi, who by all accounts was a pretty chill overlord. Do that and bide his time (basically what Ieyasu did), and all this could've been avoided.

It is sad that Hojo Genan, also known as Hojo Nagatsuna (1493-1589), the son of Hojo Soun(!), Hojo Ujitsuna´s little brother, died just before the conflict between the Hojo and Hideyoshi. He was well-educated and I am certain that he would have advised the Hojo to submit to Hideyoshi and in that way the Hojo would have survived and remained as an important daimyo family.

Thinking about it, at this point if Masamune had at least 30,000 men he could have chose to assist the Hojo & pursue his dream of taking over the country. He would just have to rely on the element of surprise. If he had got message to the Hojo to launch a full-scale charge out of the castle, he could have flanked the Toyotomi from the rear (or side) and possibly rout their army. If they were successful in this one battle, he could have caused any Toyotomi allies with wavering loyalty to flip sides, for instance Tokugawa Ieyasu. The only issue I would see is him being able to discreetly mobilise his army to the battlefield, Hideyoshi would most likely get word of his movements and order a temporary retreat. But hey what do I know lmao
