It's a Naga (Serpent) and Garuda (Bird-like) creatures, it's from Thai culture. The two creatures are rivals in Thai culture that's why it's hard for them to be together. Phaya (Billy) and Tharn (Babe) are past lovers but couldn't be together in their past lives because whenever they get closer, Phaya is always in danger or dies. It's something like that.
