A railway worker has been haunted by an apparition warning him against his duty in clearing the way at the time of a passing train. The narrator learns that the signalman was killed by a passing train while he had been standing on the line and failed to get out of the way. His own future ghost, appearing in a form that can be seen, foretells a catastrophe by yelling at him time and again to look out and clear the way.
