Hi Abhishek! We do call that transition state between chair and boat the 'half-chair' conformation. I call it a transition state because it is a state which is at an energetic maximum (not minimum), so it only exists for an instant during the transition from chair to twist-boat. We do not use the term 'half-boat' conformation, because it would be exactly the same as the 'half-chair'! Thanks for the insightful question, maybe when I have time I will make it into a video!

@sagarathani27293 жыл бұрын
Sir why half chair less stable??
@ChemSurvival3 жыл бұрын
Half chair is less stable because five of the six carbon atoms are coplanar, making their bond anges closer to 120, greater than the ideal angle if 109.5. Additionally, the hydrogen atoms bonded to those coplanar carbon atoms are eclipsed (have a zero degree dihedral). Both of these features destabilize the half chair relative to the chair or even the boat confirmation

We call cis 1,2 dimethyl cyclohexane as symmetrical although it's chair form doesn't have any element of symmetry. Explanation please?
@ChemSurvival4 жыл бұрын
Rapid interconversion between the two conformers leads to a situation in which the two substituents are chemically indistinguishable from one another. This is the usual explanation offered in texts.

Hello sir, can you post a video on why in 'cis-2-methyl cyclohexanol', when OH is on axial position and Methyl on equatorial position, the compound is more stable as compared to when OH is on equatorial position and Methyl at the axial position? I know, bulkier groups acquiring equatorial positions make a compound stable, then here (OH-17 gram/mol., Methyl 15 gram/mol.) OH on equatorial should make compound stable as compared when it is on equatorial position. Please help.

Would you please give the picture of twist boat conformation ????
@bhanugupta559911 жыл бұрын
sir , i want a question that in video you have shown that boat form is formed first then twisted boat is formed but in theory somewhere i have read that twisted boat is formed first then boat form takes place.
@ChemSurvival11 жыл бұрын
bhanu, you are correct. the twist boat forms first, directly from the half chair. I wasn't really trying to show the entire process sequentially, but rather to show how all other possible configurations are achiral. I configured the model in a twist boat last so that I could end the discussion with twist boat (which was the topic of the original question). Thanks for the comment!

Why c is 1, 4 di t butyl exist in twist boat and not chair.
@ChemSurvival6 жыл бұрын
The answer lies in the diaxial interactions that would have to exist for cis-1,4-di t-butylcyclohexane in the chair. In each of the two chair conformers, one of the two t-butyl groups is axial. This creates a very high energy conformation because a very bulky t-butyl group is in the sterically crowded axial position. But the twist boat conformation can place both t-butyl groups in less crowded positions simultaneously (opposite the flagpole hydrogen positions). This is the most energetically favorable conformation, and so it is best description of the conformation of cis-1,4-dit-butylcyclohexane.
