When they were filming the scene where Hannibal met Clarice, it was Anthony Hopkin’s choice to be standing in the center of his cell. When the director asked him why he was doing that, Hopkins said “I’m waiting to greet her.” When the director asked how he knows she’s coming, Hopkins said “I can smell her.”

When you ask someone a sensitive question while staring into their eyes, they will reflexively be more closed off and abrupt. When Hannibal asks Clarice his questions, he looks away in order to disarm her by allowing her to be more comfortable. Also, he is concentrating his mind on listening and examining details in the information and her vocal intonation. By looking away, he is abandoning his sense of sight in a way, even though his eyes are open, he is not using them to aquire information or to intimidate. Sorry if my response is to lengthy. It's just my take on it.

Makes sense but body language is also a big thing in getting more details from someone like are they being truthful or lying. But she would obviously be really nervous with him and making her feel more at ease could help her open up more like feeling more in control and not having her guard up like what should and shouldn't I tell him. And so in that he would be in control by letting her feel in control
@deg1studios4 жыл бұрын

@@deg1studios true you can look in your peripheral vision and their tone of voice and the words they use you can see or tell how they are feeling and such and can change strategies if it's not working how you wanted. Like if she was acting less emotional idk he could tell even if not looking her in the eyes if it wasn't working or not the control he wanted and change it. He did look directly at her like the what was it lima beans and made that noise. But he was always respectful to her and kinda reminds me of like a professor and her the student like him being no think what we're the clues and she wanted to prove herself to him as she did in the movie as a female FBI or whatever agent she was in a workforce of men. She did respect him and wanted to have like not the upper hand but him be like yes good you're on the right path. But idk maybe I'm wrong just my opinion haven't seen the whole movie in awhile. But yeah I agree that you're right that you don't need to make eye contact to do that like he could clearly tell she was nervous and such and while he wanted to be on top in position he knew when to look away and when to look at her to get the effect he wanted. A bit of trivia I heard: Hopkins' hissing after the Chianti line was ad-libbed, but the director liked it. Some say you can tell by the pause between his line and the hiss, because it might have been Hopkins allowing a bit of a pause just in cause they wanted to edit his ad-lib out. Some theorise the steps Hannibal took to escape were in themselves macabre clues to Wild Bill's motives, the "winged moth" motif of the corpse and the disguising as other people. Haven't seen it for a long long time but I think the handshake was a sign of acceptance. Also, when you realised he wanted the size to wear the skin was probably my favourite reaction to date 😁

Actually, the first film adapted from the Harris novels was Manhunter (1986, based on Red Dragon) which features Brian Cox as Lecter, spelled "Lecktor". Brian Cox did a decent job but his Lecter wasn't near as memorable as Hopkins in this film you just watched.

Anthony Hopkins won best lead actor for this and had only a little over 16 min of screen time that’s how much of an impact he had on the film and Jodie Foster won an oscar and also It became the third film (the other two being 1934's It Happened One Night and 1975's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) to win Academy Awards in all the top five categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is also the only Best Picture winner widely considered a horror film, and one of only six horror films to have been nominated in the category.

My first exposure to this movie I was WAY too young for it, but my older brother was babysitting and watching it on TV. The titular scene freaked me out so badly I had to leave the room (because my brother refused to stop watching even though I literally cried...nice guy, right?) and had nightmares about it for years. Couldn’t watch the entire thing until well into adulthood.

You should check out "Manhunter", based on Red Dragon, the 1st Hannibal Lecter novel, before u watch the 21st century Red Dragon with Anthony Hopkins. When I was in film school, we had a workshop with Chris Newman, who was the production sound mixer for this movie. The man is a legend, worked on Amadeus, Philadelphia, A Chorus Line, Wall Street, The Godfather, The Exorcist (1973), Fame, The English Patient... you name it. When we discussed this movie, he mentioned, among other things, how deeply impressed he was at Jody Foster's voice control. In one of the first takes of those jail interviews, her voice volume spiked, making the audio take unusable. When Chris mentioned it and asked for another take, preparing to lower the mic volume, Foster intervened and said she would adjust her own voice volume instead. Which she did to absolute perfection. And that became the norm throughout the movie, with her checking with him, adjusting if necessary, and never losing the impact of her performance no matter what. Chris said that, in his (long) experience, not many actors bothered to be that considerate towards sound workers to begin with, so this was not only proof of her skills, but of great professionalism.

I’m with every one recommending you watch the “Hannibal” TV show. :) it’s on Netflix and finally accessible to most people. And with this movie fresh in your memory, I think you’ll really appreciate getting to see what Hannibal was like when he still had to keep his mask on. Anthony Hopkins was perfect for this version of Hannibal but Mads brings something entirely new to the table. The entire show is just- art.

Hit the nail on the head. The movie was a great mix of a horror, serial killer film but with an amplified quality and brilliant performances. It elevated what the genre could be. The first time I watched the film and the cross cutting between the two houses, my friends and I were so on edge. It was a great experience.

The other films to win those four awards were It Happened One Night (1935) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). Incidentally, I could see you posting a reaction to Cuckoo's Nest, a fantastic film.

You should definitely watch all of them! Hannibal (2001) is the follow up to this… However, the following movie “Red Dragon” is actually a prequel to all of this and a better movie to watch would be the 1986 movie “Manhunter” which actually is the same movie as red dragon. However a different actor plays Hannibal and Brian Cox is fantastic in the role! Bill Peterson is great in the movie too!!

The book is loosely taken from a 1995 non-fiction crime book written by retired FBI agent John E. Douglas. The book details Douglas' "criminal-personality profiling" on serial killers and mass murderers, which he developed over decades of interviews with known killers. The book includes profiles of the Atlanta child killer, Wayne Williams, Edmund Kemper, Robert Hansen, and Larry Gene Bell, and suggests proactive steps on luring culprits to contact the police. He lived through quite a few horror shows in real life.

There is a sequel "Hannibal". That movie is still fine I guess, but the problem is that there they pushed to the front the aspects that in this movie were (quite effectively) only secondary aspects. Which is exactly what I expected from a sequel. But unfortunately, it also means that Hannibal is just a decent movie while Silence of the Lambs is an all time classic.

Fun fact: This movie is not actually the first movie of the series. The first movie was not a commercial success like Silence of the Lambs, and Silence of the Lambs was not really marketed as a sequel, but it is. The first movie is Man Hunter; Hannibal's last name is spelled differently but pronounced the same, and Hopkins is not the actor. The movie Red Dragon that came third I believe in this series (if you count Silence of the Lambs as the first movie) was presumed a prequel by many or most, but it is actually a remake; a remake of Man Hunter.
@luketrottier93884 жыл бұрын
Just finished watching the reaction. RE: Your question about is it a standalone; ha, I inadvertently answered that already. Assuming we count Man Hunter and call this the 2nd movie, the third is Hannibal; usually seen as the sequel/2nd movie. They are all based on books; although, if memory serves there is an actual sequel in the series, the last of the movies, and I don't know if that is based on a book. I know of 3 books, and 4 movies (4th being a remake of the first - assuming you count Silence of the Lambs as the second). Loved your first time reaction, man. Good catch with Hannibal looking away and diverting his eye contact during certain interactions with Clarice. Red Dragon, the 4th movie that remakes the 1st, and takes place before Silence of the Lambs, is excellent, too. I am normally not a HUGE score/sound guy, but Danny Elfman was tremendous in Red Dragon. It has Edward Norton from Fight Klub in it, too. He was excellent! You must watch Red Dragon sometime. Lastly, I am not normally a big TV guy - I love the medium, but dedicate very little time to it... Breaking Bad, what you are reacting to now, being one of the last shows I watched during it's run. Another is Hannibal - admittedly I didn't finish the 3rd season for some reason, and need to get on that right now. But Hannibal the tv show was/has been excellent as well. Very pleased with it! It came out after all of the movies. Maybe that could be a tv show reaction idea.

I think I appreciate that your videos aren't just "OMIGAWD THAT'S INSANE!", but genuine substantive responses to the films that's still lighthearted and fun.
