They were phenomenal, but Ted Levine was no slouch as Buffalo Bill either. I feel like his performance gets overshadowed by theirs because they were so incredible. He was a little over-the-top, but I don’t think that was a bad thing. I think it fit well in his characterization of Buffalo Bill. He would’ve been a difficult character to figure out how to play, and I think Ted Levine really came up with a great persona for someone so uniquely bizarre and fucked-up.

Her father, the nightwatchmen died during a burglary and was shot in the back. She was afraid all her life of making the same mistake...much to her detriment. Remember the scene where she forgot to clear her corners in training. She was so anxious about her back she forgot to check them entirely. The first novel in the series is "Red Dragon" (1981). "Then Silence of the Lambs" (1988), then "Hannibal" (1999). Red Dragon was filmed and released in 1986 under the title "Manhunter," with Brain Cox as Lecktor. The next film was "Silence of the Lambs" (1991) which you just watched. From that point, Hopkins owned the role and was Lecter to everyone. Then "Hannibal," which retained Anthony Hopkins but replaced Jodie Foster. Then finally they released a new "Red Dragon" movie, so that there'd be a complete set of films with Hopkins in the role. Aside from Hopkins, Red Dragon also returned Anthony Heald as Dr. Chilton. Both of them had to appear younger than they were ten/eleven years before, when "Lambs" was filmed. Wonders of makeup. Hopkins has done other very creepy roles, such as in "Magic." And positive characters. He's been Alfred Hitchcock, Zorro, Pope Benedict, Nixon, Dr. Kellogg, and Van Helsing. Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill) also played the creepy character Wes in "Betrayed" (1988), and several other negative characters. From 2002-2009 he was Captain Stottlemeyer (Tony Shaloub's supervisor) on TV's "Monk." Took me a long time to realize that it was the same actor.

Lector's cell having a glass door instead of bars gives the impression that he's not so much a prisoner as much a museum specimen that's being studied. The most frightening thing about him happens at the end. In his cell, he knows you know what he is and he's still terrifying. But at the very end....he just walks into the crowd and vanishes. Real monsters do exist. Do you know the scariest thing about them? They hide in the light.

This film is one off the few film's to have won the Big 5 Oscar's. Best Actor Anthony Hopkins, Best Actress Jodie Foster, Best Director Jonathan Demme, Best Adapted Screenplay Ted Tally and Best Film. There's 2 other films with Hopkins as Lecter, a prequel Red Dragon and a Sequel Hannibal. Both good bit not at the same level as this film. There's a prequel about Lecters early years called Hannibal Rising and the Manhunter film that came out before all the rest starring William Peterson and Brian Cox which is a decent watch from what I can remember. The TV has Mads Mikkelson as Lecter and is really good IMO. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your reactions thoroughly.

@@crescentfreshbret Brian Cox was the first to play Hannibal Lecter in the movie Man Hunter based on the First Novel about Hannibal called Red Dragon, which is part off the Anthony Hopkins trilogy. Just some trivia: Manhunter - directed by Michael Mann, starring William Petersen (CSI) and Brian Cox (as Lector) - based on the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, introduced the modern "procedural thriller" as well as the character Hannibal Lector into the public consciousness. Petersen went on to star in a TV series called CSI many years later that borrowed a lot of the creepy style, and went on to spawn multiple spin offs that also went through the roof, while the overall style of Manhunter spawned dozens of imitators, unleashing the modern "serial killer" genre and becoming a great example of Michael Mann's signature hard-boiled cops and robbers vibe. Silence of the Lambs - based on the second novel by Harris - was obviously a horror masterpiece, as you said, and became the ONLY horror movie to win Best Picture, plus a slew of other Oscars, as well as cementing Anthony Hopkins status as a phenomenal actor, to the point that he was worried he would be typecast as Lector and never get to play any other roles. Luckily for Hopkins fans, he gave us The Elephant Man, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Remains of the Day, Nixon, The Edge, Amistad, and The Mask of Zorro before returning to the role that made him a superstar, and The Rite, The World's Fastest Indian, and Thor afterwards. Hannibal - directed by Sir Ridley Scott and based on the third novel by Thomas Harris (which was a HUGE letdown to fans of the first two books despite retaining many of the creepy, serial killer vibes) - wasn't bad by any means, but Jodie Foster refused to return because of the lackluster novel, and several failed attempts to write a better screenplay. So Julianne Moore took over the role of Clarice, and did a good enough job, but it didn't thrill audiences to see Starling recast, even with a hugely popular actress of Moore's caliber. The ending was changed slightly from the novel, but it still couldn't match the cinematic influence of Manhunter, or the chilling, breakout power of Silence. Red Dragon - directed by Bret Ratner - was a remake of Manhunter, a prequel to Silence, with Hopkins returning as Lector, and starring Ed Norton starring as Will Graham. It made every effort to go back to the style of Silence, and succeeded at creating a full Hopkins-as-Lector trilogy. Not a bad movie at all, just not as good as Manhunter or Silence. Then they made another prequel called Hannibal Rising, to cash in on the Lector craze, but it wasn't based on an original Harris work - just a few of his backstory notes in the novel Hannibal - and met with mixed reviews at best. Hannibal the TV series started out strong, but the producers thought they were going to get the rights to Silence of the Lambs when the series started, and ultimately could not, so they stretched out the plot of Red Dragon/ Manhunter over three seasons, and started creating their own original material, which drove it off the rails for me personally, although many loved it and wanted more after its third season cancellation. I LOVE Manhunter, Silence, and I really enjoyed Hannibal and Red Dragon. Thanks for reaction to this one - sorry about the trouble with copyright, but I've heard several reaction-makers complain of this recently, so best of luck and thanks for the effort is all I can say!

Most people seemed to think that the sequel film "Hannibal" was a disappointment compared to this. But if all you want to see is more of Anthony Hopkins fucking people up, then it *really* delivers on that. "Red Dragon" was the prequel movie about the agent who originally captured Hannibal Lecter, but it was more about the hunt for another psycho serial killer, so in that respect it is very similar to "Silence of the Lambs" if you want more of that. "Manhunter" was the original movie version of the "Red Dragon" novel, but it was not as faithful to the book (namely, it did not have the Red Dragon subplot, so they couldn't name the movie that!). But it did benefit from some super-stylish directing by Michael Mann.

That isn't why they couldn't use the name Red Dragon, dumbass. They simply didn't obtain the rights, and Jodie Foster doesn't even like Hannibal The Book wich is why she refused to do the sequel cuz she thinks it ruins The Clarice Character since Hannibal and Clarice hook up.

Anthony Hopkins MADE the Hannibal Lecter character. He existed in books - but Hopkins made him charismatic, and the Hopkins-Foster chemistry just lit it on fire in this movie. Okay brief overview of the Lecter series. Manhunter - 80’s adaptation of the novel Red Dragon. Some of it works and some of it, doesn’t. Its Lecter trivia at this point, only for completionists. Silence of the Lambs - first iconic Lecter movie, based on novel of same name. It’s fucking great, you just saw it you know. Hannibal - sequel to Silence. Hopkins comes back as Lecter but Jodie Foster doesn’t as Starling. Weird movie, definitely not as good. Still fun. Red Dragon - the second adaptation of RD, last of Hopkins trilogy, SotL prequel even tho Hopkins kinda looking old. Not Silence, but very good. Hannibal Rising - a teenage Lecter origin story. Its just as stupid as it sounds. Avoid. But its can be fun with enough alcohol I guess. Hannibal the TV Series - an absolute gem more people need to check out. Mads Mikkelsen plays Lecter and knocks it out of the park. Lawrence Fishburne and Gillian Anderson, its a weirdly good cast for NBC. Also wayyy more cinematic and violent than you’d expect. Follows Will Graham the protagonist of Red Dragon hunting killers with the help of a not yet captured Lecter, who is of course playing his own game. Very different from Silence but my god its good. Not a prequel exactly though. Its its own continuity.

Manhunter is excellent with a pretty good Lecter as played by Brian Cox, although he plays a smaller part in the story. it's also very much an '80s movie, so it doesn't feel as timeless as Silence of the Lambs. The sequel is not terrible but I think it's not as good as Manhunter or Silence of the Lambs. Red Dragon is essentially a redo of Manhunter, but with Anthony Hopkins playing Lecter so it fits with Silence and Hannibal. Red Dragon isn't bad but I prefer Manhunter.

Manhunts was made by the producer of Miami Vice so it was a little flashy and less dark as the movie Red Dragon

Classic movie, but i always hated the fact that the killer got away with murdering for some time without getting caught, yet cant shoot someone after getting the drop on a person who cant see in the pitch black while having the advantage of night vision and their gun aimed right at them. Not only not being able to shoot them, but getting shot and killed in the process. Always bugged me.
